Prelude by Katherine Mansfield Pdf

»Prelude« is a short story by Katherine Mansfield, first published in 1918. KATHERINE MANSFIELD, actually Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp (later Murry), was born in 1888 in Wellington, New Zealand, and died in 1923 as a result of her pulmonary tuberculosis at a hospital near Fontainebleau, France. Mansfield left her homeland at the age of 19 and moved to Europe. In London, she established herself as a writer and became friends with Virginia Woolf and D.H. Lawrence. Rumour has it that the latter infected her with the lung disease that became her demise, at the young age of 35.

Katherine Mansfield - The Early Years by Gerri Kimber Pdf

The first biography of Katherine Mansfields early years since 1933Focusing on the first nineteen years of Katherine Mansfields life, from her birth in 1888 to her arrival in London in 1908 to be a writer, this new biography sheds new light on Mansfields childhood and teenage years as well as on her development as a writer. The biography draws extensively on previously unused archive material, including the research papers assembled by Ruth Elvish Mantz for her 1933 biography of Mansfield, detailed reminiscences of former school friends and acquaintances, Mansfields autograph book, birthday book, her early letters, notebooks and family papers. Using this rich seam of material, Gerri Kimber explores Mansfields home life and school days, her friendships, first infatuations and sexual experimentation both with young men and young women and her travels through the volcanic North Island of New Zealand and examines her earliest published stories which appeared in school magazines. What emerges is a picture of a feisty, mischievous, young girl and an expressive, non-conformist teenager: the unruly Kass Beauchamp who became Katherine Mansfield, the famous modernist writer.Key Features Brings to light a period of Mansfields life previously of little interest to biographersPresents a new image of Mansfield as a child and young womanReveals how her youthful experiences fashioned both her later personality and the content of much of her acclaimed adult writingDiscussion of the biographical elements present in Mansfields New Zealand stories

Katherine Mansfield and World War One by Gerri Kimber Pdf

Examines Katherine Mansfield's engagement with the First World War and its impact on her writingsThis special issue of Katherine Mansfield Studies is in remembrance of the centenary of one of the most significant events of the modernist period. Like the reclamation of women's war writings that we have already seen in relation to Virginia Woolf and others, Mansfield's literary response to the key political event of her time is fundamental to our understanding of her developing writerly style. It is in her responses to the war that we find a 'political Mansfield', and the articles in this volume provide us with a greater appreciation of Mansfield in her socio-historical context. In offering new readings of Mansfield's explicit and implicit war stories, the contributions to this volume refine and extend our knowledge of particular stories and their genealogy. They illuminate the specific and more general influences of the war on Mansfield's evolving technique and, jointly, they reveal the importance of the war on her literary language, as well as for her own particular brand of modernism. This volume helps develop our ideas of what constitute war writings and, in so doing, expands the scope of Mansfield scholarship and the field of First World War studies.

Katherine Mansfield and the Bloomsbury Group by Todd Martin Pdf

The New Zealand-born writer Katherine Mansfield associated intimately with many members of the Bloomsbury group, but her literary aesthetics placed her at a distance from the artistic works of the group. With chapters written by leading international scholars, Katherine Mansfield and the Bloomsbury Group explores this conflicted relationship. Bringing together biographical and critical studies, the book examines Mansfield's relationships – personal and literary – with such major Modernist figures as Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, Aldous Huxley and Walter de la Mare as well as the ways in which her work engaged with and reacted against Bloomsbury. In this way the book reveals the true extent of Mansfield's wider influence on 20th-century modernist writing.

Katherine Mansfield: Story-teller by Kathleen Jones Pdf

'I was jealous of her writing – the only writing I have been jealous of.' —Virginia Woolf Widely acknowledged as New Zealand's finest writer, Katherine Mansfield holds a special place in the hearts of New Zealanders. A new biography is a significant literary event. Katherine Mansfield: The Story-teller is the first new biography of Mansfield for a quarter of a century. It is published at a time when interest in Mansfield and her work is increasing throughout the world. Kathleen Jones gives a vivid portrayal of Mansfield, correcting previous misinterpretations of her illnesses and relationships, and weaving a compelling drama from the detail. The story extends further still, beyond Mansfield's death in 1923, to include the subsequent life of her husband, John Middleton Murry, shedding fascinating new light on the way Murry controversially manipulated the publication of some of Mansfield's unpublished work. Drawing astutely on Mansfield's own letters and journals, biographer Kathleen Jones, using the present tense throughout, has crafted a text unusually sparkling and intimate, providing a new kind of picture of this brilliant, original yet fragile writer. This is a major work, and a worthy addition to our understanding and appreciation of New Zealand's greatest writer.
