A League of My Own by Patricia I. Brown Pdf

Growing up, Pat Brown had two dreams: to play baseball and to attend college. She was told she couldn't play baseball because she was a girl and couldn't attend college because she had no money, but in spite of the obstacles, she achieved both of these dreams, playing for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1950 and 1951 and going on to attend college. She is among the few women professional baseball players to be included into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. "As the only former AAGPBL player to have written about the League," Brown says, "I feel like I have finally pitched my no hit game." This is a memoir of playing baseball on the sandlot, discovering and playing in the AAGPBL, and playing basketball in college. Brown shares her thoughts on the League's history, including what Philip K. Wrigley sought to do by creating the AAGPBL, what happened after Wrigley left to give more attention to the Chicago Cubs, and why the League ended. She also considers the future for women's professional baseball. Interviews with such former AAGPBL players as Helen Hannah Campbell, Patricia "Pat" Courtney, Madeline "Maddy" English, Lenora "Smokey" Mandella, Jacqueline "Jackie" Matson, Jane Moffet, Mary "Sis" Moore, and Janet "Pee Wee" Wiley are included.

Back from his National Service in Korea, Sam quickly rises through the police force, but soon finds himself in competition with his younger brother Paul. Meanwhile, Carrie realises that the joys of marriage may not create the easy life she had hoped for. And on what feels like the other side of the world, Rachel's eldest daughter Hannah faces the harsh realities of life on a Hebridean island. Through blessings and tragedies, streaks of luck and blows of misfortune, the Campbells will face their most trying days. But when surprising news brings the opportunity for redemption, can the family learn to put the past behind them? Millie Gray once again brilliantly recreates the atmosphere of the era with all the hardships and struggles as well as the fun, warmth and humour of everyday life.

Finally, readers will be taken through case studies of each individual team with a step-by-step analysis of how these tactical setups are successful and how they can be exploited. Teens A League of Their Own by Christine Burton Pdf

My inspiration for writing “Teens a League of Their Own” came from working with regular and special need students in all grades K-12. They were interested in the cooking and baking shows on television, yet showed skepticism when trying to cook or bake on their own at home. Even though they had interest in cooking/baking, they needed extra help with reading and comprehending recipes. They complained most child cookbooks on the market only had simple, non-cooking recipes. They wanted to make foods from recipes in adult cookbooks-but were confused when reading them. I realized that when I was a child, these same issues applied to me. I would end up re-writing recipes in a simple step-by-step method on index cards, including the order of ingredient use and method of preparation of each item in the ingredient list. This method made it easier for me to keep track of where I was when following the recipes and preventing me from adding in double of some ingredients or leaving ingredients out. When writing “Teens a League of Their Own,” I used this method to make my adult recipes easy for any age cook/baker to follow. 21st Century cooks/bakers are starting at the early ages of 4 and 5. Teens are already preparing full course meals and creating their own recipes and cookbooks. Students helped test the recipes in my book; showing me they were capable of following the recipes, using kitchen tools and techniques, and developing their own methods in the kitchen. My book includes 200 kitchen tested and photographed recipes connecting with the upcoming generation and inspiring any age or level cook/baker to make future attempts in the kitchen arena.

Bigger Than the Game by Dirk Hayhurst Pdf

"The best writer in a baseball uniform." —Tyler Kepner, The New York Times After nearly a decade in the minors, Dirk Hayhurst defied the odds to climb onto the pitcher's mound for the Toronto Blue Jays. Newly married, with a big league paycheck and a brand new house, Hayhurst was ready for a great season in the Bigs. Then fate delivered a crushing hit. Hayhurst blew out his pitching shoulder in an insane off-season workout program. After surgery, rehab, and more rehab, his major-league dreams seemed more distant than ever. From there things got worse, weirder, and funnier. In a crazy world of injured athletes, autograph-seeking nuns, angry wrestlers, and trainers with a taste for torture, Hayhurst learned lessons about the game—and himself—that were not in any rulebook. Honest, soul?searching, insightful, hilarious, and moving, Dirk Hayhurst's latest memoir is an indisputable baseball classic. Praise for The Bullpen Gospels and Out of My League "Dirk Hayhurst writes about baseball in a unique way. Observant, insightful, human, and hilarious." —Bob Costas "A fun read. . .This book shows why baseball is so often used as a metaphor for life." —Keith Olbermann "Entertaining and engaging. . .reminiscent of Jim Bouton's Ball Four." —Booklist "A rare gem of a baseball book." —Tom Verducci, Sports Illustrated "A humorous, candid, and insightful memoir of Hayhurst's rookie season in the majors. . .Grade: Home Run." —Cleveland Plain Dealer

In a League of Her Own by Bonnie-Jill Laflin Pdf

Some of the most influential women in sports tell their stories of courage, adversity, and triumph to trailblazer Bonnie-Jill Laflin. A half-century after Title IX legislation leveled the playing field for women and girls, the time has come to celebrate the lives and careers of some of the most notable groundbreaking women in sports, while also encouraging future generations to make history of their own. In a League of Her Own: Celebrating Female Firsts in Sports shares the stories of nineteen impactful women in sports, including Billie Jean King, Danica Patrick, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Laila Ali, Jeanie Buss, and Mary Lou Retton. These iconic women open up to Bonnie-Jill Laflin, herself a trailblazer as the first and only female NBA scout, about the sobering realities females face in the sports world and the many obstacles they had to overcome. But they also celebrate the amazing support they received from colleagues, friends, family, and the women who came before them, and impart their own desires to inspire young women through their stories. In a League of Her Own gives these remarkable women a voice to share their experiences across the sports industry. They discuss such issues as the pressures of social media, the sexism that still exists in boardrooms and locker rooms, and their hopes for closer equality in the sports space. Their journeys are each unique, but together, they have changed the face of sports and culture forever.

In A League Of Their Own!: The Dick, Kerr Ladies (TM) 1917-1965 by Gail J. Newsham Pdf

In a League Their Own! is the true story of the Dick, Kerr Ladies FC. Formed at a munitions factory in Preston, their unique history lay buried for far too long as they became footballs best kept secret. They set the football world alight during the First World War and went on to become the best in the world. On Boxing Day 1920, 53,000 spectators packed Goodison Park, Everton to watch them play, and by 1921 their popularity was at its height. However, the FA saw things in a very different light and changed the course of the women's game forever. On 5 December 1921, they banned women from playing on League grounds, and the ban remained in force for almost fifty years. Against all the odds, the Dick, Kerr Ladies continued playing until 1965 and raised in excess of £10 million for charity. This 2021 edition reveals yet more amazing stories of these incredible women, and documents an accurate playing history from 1917-1965. My grandmother Alice Kell, never really spoke about her time playing football, other than to blame her severe arthritis on it. I always knew she had been captain of a women's football team in her youth, but never realised just what an enormous contribution she had made to the history of the Dick, Kerr Ladies. It wasn't until I returned to Preston and read Gail's book that I learned just what an amazing group of women they were. I am immensely proud of my grandmother and everything she achieved. Val Conn My family and I are delighted that my cousin, Lily Parr, has been acknowledged and portrayed with such accuracy in this book. Thanks to the dedicated and thorough research undertaken by Gail, we feel that people can now get to know the real Lily who was always a very special part of our lives. June Patten I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Gail Newsham's book about the Dick, Kerr Ladies. The late Florrie Redford, was my auntie and how proud she would have been to know that the team would be part of the history of Preston. Mrs J Shaw, Blackpool

League of Super Feminists by Miron Malle Pdf

"This primer on feminism and media literacy teaches young readers why it matters The League of Super Feminists is an energetic and fierce comic for tweens and younger teens. Cartoonist Mirion Malle guides readers through some of the central tenets of feminism and media literacy including consent, intersectionality, privilege, body image, inclusivity and more; all demystified in the form of a witty, down-to-earth dialogue that encourages questioning the stories we're told about identity. Malle’s insightful and humorous comics transport lofty concepts from the ivory tower to the eternally safer space of open discussion. Making reference to the Bechdel test in film and Peggy McIntosh’s dissection of white privilege through the metaphor of the “invisible knapsack,” The League of Super Feminists is an asset to the classroom, library, and household alike. Knights and princesses present problems associated with consent; superheroes reveal problematic stereotypes associated with gender; and grumpy onlookers show just how insidious cat-calling culture can be. No matter how women dress, Malle explains, there seems to always be someone ready to call it out. The League of Super Feminists articulates with both poise and clarity how unconscious biases and problematic thought processes can have tragic results. Why does feminism matter? Are feminists man-haters? How do race and feminism intersect? Malle answers these questions for young readers, in a comic that is as playful and hilarious as it is necessary."

The Cubs Fan's Guide to Happiness by George Ellis Pdf

The Chicago Cubs tradition is one built on spectacular losing streaks and even more spectacular collapses. Yet despite all the losses and disappointments, an amazing thing happens every summer at the corner of Addison and Sheffield: millions of fans flock to Wrigley Field. And millions more fans across the country regularly tune in to watch Cubs games broadcast on television. Exactly why Cubs fans support their squad with such reckless abandon isn't entirely clear--these people represent a remarkable aberration of human psychology, epitomizing the spirit and experience of dedication to a desperate cause. And the whole time, they're oddly happy. The Cubs Fan's Guide to Happiness will reveal what makes Cubs fans tick and what keeps them happy. It will explain why it's not over until you're mathematically eliminated, why winning really isn't everything, and why it's perfectly acceptable to blame all your troubles on a scapegoat, which may or may not be an actual goat. To more fully illustrate the incredible power of these profound and practical principles for self-transformation, The Cubs Fan's Guide to Happiness will also provide educational sidebars, practical applications, and true words of wisdom from celebrity Cubs fans. But this book isn't just for Chicagoans. It's for anyone who wants to be happy in the face of adversity.

Soon Herman fell in love with a beautiful Swedish-American secretary working for the OSS, their courtship unfolding amid the glamour and intrigue of wartime Stockholm.
