The Four Gospels by William S. Stobb Pdf

The Four Gospels have been read and studied for nearly 2,000 years. As early as the second century Irenaeus, Church father and martyr, declared that four accounts of the life of Christ were needed - no more and no less! Yet many Christians, in spite of the numerous and excellent commentaries available today, cannot answer the question, “Why four Gospels?” This in-depth volume, which took 20 years to research and 10 years to write, clearly reveals the necessity of a four-fold portrait of Christ. Selected excerpts from some of the most celebrated writers of the past, such as A. Edersheim, Chas. Erdman, F. W. Farrar, Edw. Gibbon, F. L. Godet, D. S. Gregory, F. W. Krummacher, H. H. Milman, G. Campbell Morgan, Arthur Pink, Sir Wm. Ramsay, Chas. Rollin, R. C. Trench, B. F. Westcott, and scores of others, are incorporated throughout the book in order to explain and substantiate the historical background and characteristic differences of the Four Gospels. This work is an excellent reference for teachers, students, and historians, but is designed for Christians in all walks of life. A homeschooling mother stated that the “work is quite readable (even by a pressured mom) and very worthwhile. I especially like the organization of the book, which helped me keep my bearings. The history is fascinating and helpful.”

The Priority of John by John A. T. Robinson Pdf

It has been the fate of many books on John to be left unfinished, for its interpretation naturally forms the crowning of a lifetime. I have myself been intending to write a book on the Fourth Gospel since the 'fifties, before I broke off (reluctantly) to be Bishop of Woolwich, though I am grateful now that I did not produce it prematurely at that time. It means however that I shall be compelled to refer to and often recapitulate material directly or indirectly related to the Johannine literature, which I have written over the years (some of it indeed while I was bishop). Many scholars in fact, if not most now, think that the author of the Gospel himself never lived to finish it and have seen the work as the product of numerous hands and redactors. As will become clear, I prefer to believe that the ancient testimony of the church is correct that John wrote it 'while still in the body' and that its roughnesses, self-corrections and failures of connection, real or imagined, are the result of its not having been smoothly or finally edited. If so I am in good company. At any rate who could wish for a better last testimony from his friends than that 'his witness is true' (John 21.24)? In other words, he got it right--historically and theologically. --from the Introduction At the time of his death in December 1983, John Robinson had completed the text of the book on which his 1984 Bampton lectures were to be based, so that it is possible to see the full details of his extremely controversial argument that the Gospel of John was the first Gospel to be written. Dr. Robinson himself once described the dawning of his conviction that this was the case as a 'Damascus Road experience', and his presentation of the evidence is made with all the customary vigor with which he would argue for something in which he deeply believed. The objections which need to be overcome to stand on its head what has long been one of the fundamental assumptions of New Testament scholarship are substantial, but here once again Dr. Robinson shows that so much of what is taken as established fact in that area is no more than preference and presumption. Certainly he will provoke rethinking on a whole series of topics, from the chronology of Jesus' ministry to the nature of his teaching. As The Listener said of the equally controversial Redating the New Testament: The greatest pleasure Dr. Robinson gives is purely intellectual. His book is a prodigious virtuoso exercise in inductive reasoning and an object lesson in the nature of historical argument and historical knowledge. This sequel equals, if not excels, its predecessor in those respects and is a fitting tribute to a brilliant New Testament scholar. The manuscript was prepared for publication by Dr. Chip Coakley, Dr Robinson's pupil, now Lecturer in Religious Studies in the University of Lancaster.

An Outline Handbook of the Life of Christ From the Four Gospels (Classic Reprint) by William Arnold Stevens Pdf

Excerpt from An Outline Handbook of the Life of Christ From the Four Gospels There is a growing conviction that the Life of Christ should be made the beginning and the basis of Biblical study, the subject of the child's earliest lesson and of the thinker's profoundest thought. Christian thought and faith alike have always found their proper centre in the person and redemptive work of Jesus of Nazareth. In the words of the apostle Paul, Other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. The special endeavor of the Christian church in our day has been to verify for itself and seize with a firmer grasp the historic facts that form the basis of its faith and life. The study of the Life of Christ means simply the historical study of the four gospels. The events they narrate are to be studied as history in their chronological sequence and in their organic connec tion. This Handbook is designed to promote work on these lines, not only in colleges and theological schools, but in clubs for private study, and in Bible classes of all grades. It is not a textbook, but is intended to aid in using the fourfold gospel as a textbook. The chief portion for practical use, and that upon which by far the greater portion of our labor has been expended, is the Analytical Outline, occupying pages 8 to 19. It aims not only to exhibit the framework of the gospel narrative as a whole, and to set forth the events in somewhat their true order, but also to classify the whole body of material in a form most convenient for historical study. Subsidiary helps for the same purpose are furnished in the accompanying explanations and tables. The nine Parts into which the Outline is divided represent, we believe, the main natural divisions of our Lord's life and ministry. Thus laid open, the gospel story will be read with a clearer under standing. The ordinary division, depending upon more or less definite calendar dates, is not derived from the narrative itself, but imposed upon it from without. In order that we may frame a true historical background for the narrative, it is indeed necessary to locate its events approximately in the course of the general world history, and this the gospels themselves enable us to do. But the assignment of exact dates to specific events, and the construction of a detailed chronology, while it has its value as a working theory, is at the best hypothetical, and not necessary for the more important problems with which Biblical interpretation has to deal. On page 37, the chronological scheme which many authorities have favored, and which we have adopted in teaching, is presented in connection with the Part divisions of our Analytical Outline. On the use to be made of the Chapter and Section divisions, see suggestions as to a method OF study on pages 34 - 36. From Jesus to Christ by Paula Fredriksen Pdf

"Magisterial. . . . A learned, brilliant and enjoyable study."—Géza Vermès, Times Literary Supplement In this exciting book, Paula Fredriksen explains the variety of New Testament images of Jesus by exploring the ways that the new Christian communities interpreted his mission and message in light of the delay of the Kingdom he had preached. This edition includes an introduction reviews the most recent scholarship on Jesus and its implications for both history and theology. "Brilliant and lucidly written, full of original and fascinating insights."—Reginald H. Fuller, Journal of the American Academy of Religion "This is a first-rate work of a first-rate historian."—James D. Tabor, Journal of Religion "Fredriksen confronts her documents—principally the writings of the New Testament—as an archaeologist would an especially rich complex site. With great care she distinguishes the literary images from historical fact. As she does so, she explains the images of Jesus in terms of the strategies and purposes of the writers Paul, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John."—Thomas D’Evelyn, Christian Science Monitor

Why Four Gospels? by A. W. Pink Pdf

Why does the New Testament contain four Gospels—four different accounts of the same Man? And don’t the Gospels contradict one another? Masterful Bible teacher Arthur Pink explains how the four Gospels do not contradict but rather collaborate in order to provide us with a deeper, multifaceted description of the person of Jesus Christ. In Matthew, we see Jesus as Messiah and King of the Jews. In Mark, we are introduced to the Servant of Jehovah. In Luke, we see the human Jesus as the Son of Man, Adam’s descendant. Finally, in John, we thrill to the supernatural Jesus who is undoubtedly the Son of God. No believer can truly know Jesus without having an understanding of the four distinct roles He fulfilled in His time on earth. Pink’s in-depth look at the four Gospels will boost your faith and bring you ever closer to a Savior who is fully human, fully divine, and above everything, Lord of all.

Four Gospels, One Christ by Michael John Hooton Pdf

The four Gospels are the only books in the Bible to tell the same story from four different angles. Together, they show us not only what Jesus was like and how he lived, but how his life can become the model for our own. Four Gospels, One Christ offers an overview of the three years of Jesus' public ministry--what he did and how he did it--as seen through the eyes of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. And by exploring the themes that run through the four Gospels, it invites us to reflect on what it really means to "follow Jesus."
