A London Home in the Nineties by M. V. Hughes Pdf

A London Home in the Nineties, which was first published in 1937, is the third volume in British author Molly Hughes’ entertaining and deeply moving autobiographical trilogy on her life in Victorian London. Here, Hughes recounts in loving detail her engagement to and married life with Arthur Hughes in the late 1880’s, bringing up a family of her own, as well as her work as head of the training department at Bedford College from 1892 until 1897, where she played an important role in expanding and rationalizing the teacher training curriculum. “NONE of the characters in this book are fictitious. The incidents, if not dramatic, are at least genuine memories. Expressions of jollity and enjoyment of life are understatements rather than overstatements. We were just an ordinary, suburban, Victorian family, undistinguished ourselves and unacquainted with distinguished people. It occurred to me to record our doings only because, on looking back, and comparing our lot with that of the children of today, we seemed to have been so lucky. In writing them down, however, I have come to realize that luck is at one’s own disposal, that ‘there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so’. Bring up children in the conviction that they are lucky, and behold they are. But in our case high spirits were perhaps inherited, as my story will show. “DON PEDRO. In faith, lady, you have a merry heart. “BEATRICE. Yea, my lord; I thank it, poor fool, it keeps on the windy side of care.”

Histories of Everyday Life by Laura Carter Pdf

Histories of Everyday Life is a study of the production and consumption of popular social history in mid-twentieth century Britain. It explores how non-academic historians, many of them women, developed a new breed of social history after the First World War, identified as the 'history of everyday life'. The 'history of everyday life' was a pedagogical construct based on the perceived educational needs of the new, mass democracy that emerged after 1918. It was popularized to ordinary people in educational settings, through books, in classrooms and museums, and on BBC radio. After tracing its development and dissemination between the 1920s and the 1960s, this book argues that 'history of everyday life' declined in the 1970s not because academics invented an alternative 'new' social history, but because bottom-up social change rendered this form of popular social history untenable in the changing context of mass education. Histories of Everyday Life ultimately uses the subject of history to demonstrate how profoundly the advent of mass education shaped popular culture in Britain after 1918, arguing that we should see the twentieth century as Britain's educational century.

"Can You Run Away from Sorrow?" by Ivana Bajic-Hajdukovic Pdf

This intimate social history of family life in 1990s Serbia considers how emigration effects the elders left behind. The fall of Yugoslavia in the 1990s led citizens to look for better, more stable lives elsewhere. For the older generations, however, this wasn’t an option. In this powerful work, Ivana Bajic-Hajdukovic reveals the impact that waves of emigration from Serbia had on family relationships and, in particular, on elderly mothers who stayed. With nowhere to go, and any savings given to their children to help establish new lives, these seniors faced a crumbling economy, waves of refugees entered from Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, NATO bombings, and the trial and ouster of Slobodan Milosevic. Bajic-Hajdukovic explores the transformations of family relationships and daily life practices in people’s homes, from foodways and childcare to gift exchanges. “Can You Run Away from Sorrow?” illustrates not only the tremendous sacrifice of parents, but also their profound sense of loss—of their families, their country, their stability and dignity, and most importantly, of their own identity and hope for what they thought their future would be.

Pink House Living by Emily Murray Pdf

Pink has become the hottest color in interiors. Quartz Pink was the Pantone color of 2016 and since then the hue has gone from strength to strength, playing a starring role at the 2018 Milan Design Week. "From advertising to design and fashion, millennial pink has taken popular culture by storm, and it isn't going anywhere" House & Garden Pink House Living is a beautiful, practical guide to decorating with pink by Emily Murray of the award-winning The Pink House blog. Emily draws on her recent interiors projects to guide the reader through their own rose-tinted renovations and includes case studies on well-known interiors experts that reveal their use of pink, their go-to paint shades and where they glean "pinkspiration". Pink House Living is not about decorating your home in pink from rooftop to rugs, but a look at how the color can be used alongside other hues—sometimes sparingly, sometimes in spades. Divided up by room, the book uses the color pink and its history as a starting point from which to discuss the decorating process. Readers will be entertained by Emily’s interiors insights and witty turn of phrase while gaining invaluable advice on adding pink—and color in general—to their homes.
