The Sublime Tragedy of the Lost Cause (Classic Reprint) by A. St. J. Pickett Pdf

Excerpt from The Sublime Tragedy of the Lost Cause The story of the old soldier; whose silvery locks Were lovingly mingled with the golden hair Of a beautiful girl who was sleeping there On his battle-scarred breast. The great civil war of America - that heroic struggle of the southern people in defence of the Lost Cause, against the stupendous power of the North, wielded in support of the Federal Union - furnished many a tragic incident of sellsacrifice and noble devotion, worthy to be celebrated in song or woven into the fabric of romance; but there is no private history - of which I know anything as full of dramatic effects as the one I now propose to relate. Nor can I think of one more closely interwoven with those great events that have rendered this beautiful region historic events that transpired, my child, before your fair face had made the world brighter, or these golden curls had coiled themselves so closely around your grandfather's heart. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside A Lost Cause: Look inside the book: Any one who knelt on the uncushioned stone showed an anxiety to worship and a superstitious abasement quite unworthy of a bluff, honest, British Christian; and his doings must be displeasing to a Deity who, the objectors were persuaded, was—though they did not say so in actual words—a great English God. ...Certainly no one in the church realised that in a few short weeks the fat man with the smile would be notorious all over England, and that they were to be present at the very first step in the career of one of the shrewdest of vulgar opportunists the country had ever known. ...They're all very well in their way, but they're written by D.D.'s and M.A.'s and such like, who don't care to go too far.

Reminiscences of One Who Suffered in the Lost Cause (Classic Reprint) by Charles Hewitt Hance Pdf

Excerpt from Reminiscences of One Who Suffered in the Lost Cause Evidently the enemy was fearful of an ambush, for we waited and waited but no attack was made. We were then ordered to return to our mounts. After mounting and forming in company alignment, a hollow square was formed into which Col. Porter rode. This was my first look at the man and soldier whom we were to follow unto death, if need be. He so much more than filled my expecta tions of him that I cannot express my sense of admiration, for he was certainly a knight, a cavalier, and a soldier. I have always regretted very much my brief association with him, for he was certainly justly called the Stonewall Jack son of North Missouri. Every eye was fixed on him when he spoke and said, My fellow Missourians! We have awaited the attack of the enemy; for some reason they have thought best not to do so; I need not say to you that in an event of a meeting with them, I shall depend upon you as loyal Missourians and Southerners to perform your whole duty. After these long years have passed, my memory fails me and I cannot repeat his words which were so expressive of the wrongs we had suffered, and were still suffering, for they stirred the heart and soul, until many eyes were suffused in tears. Mr. Jefferson's Lost Cause by Roger G. Kennedy Pdf

Thomas Jefferson advocated a republic of small farmers--free and independent yeomen. And yet as president he presided over a massive expansion of the slaveholding plantation system, particularly with the Louisiana Purchase, squeezing the yeomanry to the fringes and to less desirable farmland. Now Roger G. Kennedy conducts an eye-opening examination of the gap between Jefferson's stated aspirations and what actually happened. Kennedy reveals how the Louisiana Purchase had a major impact on land use and the growth of slavery. He examines the great financial interests (such as the powerful land companies that speculated in new territories and the British textile interests) that beat down slavery's many opponents in the South itself (Native Americans, African Americans, Appalachian farmers, and conscientious opponents of slavery). He describes how slaveholders' cash crops--first tobacco, then cotton--sickened the soil and how the planters moved from one desolated tract to the next. Soon the dominant culture of the entire region--from Maryland to Florida, from Carolina to Texas--was that of owners and slaves producing staple crops for international markets. The earth itself was impoverished, in many places beyond redemption. None of this, Kennedy argues, was inevitable. He focuses on the character, ideas, and ambitions of Thomas Jefferson to show how he and other Southerners struggled with the moral dilemmas presented by the presence of Indian farmers on land they coveted, by the enslavement of their workforce, by the betrayal of their stated hopes, and by the manifest damage being done to the earth itself. Jefferson emerges as a tragic figure in a tragic period. Mr. Jefferson's Lost Cause was a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title for 2003.
