The first explores the transatlantic dimension of Ford’s modernism, from his involvement with Americans like James and Pound in Britain before the war, through the Paris days among the Americans in the transatlantic review circle such as Hemingway and Stein, to his time in America in the 20s and 30s, and the American care for his reputation after his death. The second section focuses on New York, and the publishing world portrayed in Ford’s only novel set mainly in the US, When the Wicked Man. A third section, discussing culture, politics, and journalism in his writing of the 1930s, is followed by two examples of his commentary on contemporary American culture, both published here for the first time. The final section juxtaposes two examples of the many American writers who have paid tribute to Ford: an essay tracking Robert Lowell’s regular recollections of his encounters with him; and Mary Gordon’s celebration of his life with the Polish-American painter Janice Biala. Parade's End is a tetralogy by Ford Madox. The four novels were originally published under the titles: Some Do Not ... (1924), No More Parades (1925), A Man Could Stand Up — (1926), and Last Post (or The Last Post in the USA) (1928). It is set mainly in England and on the Western Front in World War I, where Ford served as an officer in the Welsh Regiment, a life vividly depicted in the novels. His wife Sylvia is a flippant socialite who seems intent on ruining him. Tietjens may or may not be the father of his wife's child. Meanwhile, his incipient affair with Valentine Wannop, a high-spirited pacifist and suffragette, has not been consummated, despite what all their friends believe. The two central novels follow Tietjens in the army in France and Belgium, as well as Sylvia and Valentine in their separate paths over the course of the war. Ford Madox Ford ( 1873 – 1939) was an English novelist, poet, critic and editor whose journals, The English Review and The Transatlantic Review, were instrumental in the development of early 20th-century English literature. The name of Ford Madox Ford appears again and again in twentieth-century literature, in many different connections. He was especially renowned as a literary personality, as a brilliant editor, and as an encourager of talented and emerging writers—"the Only Uncle of the Gifted Young," as H G. Wells called him. But he was also a major novelist in his own right, a fact which has been increasingly recognized in recent years. In this book, Mr. Meixner, a former assistant professor of English at the University of Kansas, presents an illuminating study of Ford's novels: descriptive, analytic, and evaluative. In particular he has been concerned—since the novelist was a highly conscious craftsman—with elucidating the techniques by which Ford gave (or failed to give) an intality. The reputations of The Good Soldier and of Ford's Tietjens novels have steadily risen in the last decade. Mr. Meixner's appraisals of these works are the fullest and probably the most perceptive yet published. A shortened version of his Good Soldier essay evoked much critical interest when it appeared in The Kenyon Review under the title "The Saddest Story." Lawrence to the literary world, and published the first sections of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake.He was editor of both The English Review and the transatlantic review (on which he appointed Ernest Hemingway as his assistant editor).
