A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine (Classic Reprint) by Winfield S. Hall Pdf

Excerpt from A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine The general method of presenting the subject of physiology is the same as that followed in all of the other experimental sciences, viz., the laboratory method, according to which the student is led to dis cover for himself certain facts and to formulate from his collected data conclusions which represent fundamental principles of the science. This method of presenting the experimental sciences - chemistry, physics, and the biological sciences, including physiology, psychology, pharmacology, and pathology - is an expensive one, both as to the time and the money involved in it; but from the standpoint of pedagogy it is more economical than the text-book method, because it leads directly and surely to definite results. In answer to the question as to just what these results are which follow the modern laboratory method' of instruction, it may be stated first of all that it cultivates in the student the capacity of close and accurate observation; it affords an opportunity for valuable practice in the systematic recording of the observations; it develops the power of logical thought in drawing tenable conclusions from the Observed data; and, in the formulation of conclusions, it stimulates the ability to express the thoughts in concise and unambiguous terms. In the second place, practice of this kind makes the student independent and furnishes him with just the mental equipment needed for later life in whatever line his activities may be directed. If such an education is more important for one profession than another, the medical profession is certainly the one in which its importance is greatest. The physics, chemistry, and biology studied in preparation for medicine, and the physiology, pharmacology, and pathology Of the medical course Should give the student a most admirable equipment for dealing with the complex problems of clinical practice. A Laboratory Manual of Experimental Physiology (Including General Physiology) (Classic Reprint) by Lois McPhedran Fraser Pdf

Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Experimental Physiology (Including General Physiology) Experimental physiology is now recognized as a fundamental subject in the curriculum of the medical student and as one having a most important place in the training of the student of biology. In the medical course, the physiological laboratory serves as the portal to the clinic; as the testing ground where the student may try for himself in how far the known laws of physics and chemistry can be successfully employed to explain the normal working of the human machine. NO more can theoretical study, or demonstra tion, by itself supply a correct understanding of the functions of the living body than could similar methods in training an engineer to understand an engine. Attempts to rectify, by Operations or by drugs, functional derangement in the diseased animal without a practical knowledge of the normal working of the various organs, both isolated and as a whole must be as unjustifiable as attempting to repair a complicated piece of machinery would be by any other than a practical engineer. In the training of the biologist, experimental physiology finds its value because it teaches how to interpret the relationship be tween structure and function. For the advancement of physio logical knowledge it is essential that the functions of the lower animals should be more intensively investigated by those who have been trained in the methods of the experimental physiologist. A Textbook of Experimental Physiology by N. H. Alcock Pdf

Excerpt from A d104book of Experimental Physiology: For Students of Medicine In the revised regulations of the University of London, a syllabus of Practical Physiology has been prescribed, which is more in accordance with the actual requirements of the student of medicine. The present work is an attempt to put this syllabus into practice. I have carefully gone through all the exercises with the authors, and I believe not only that the work contains the practical training required by the University of London of its candidates, but also that the student who has conscientiously worked through the. Exercises, will find that the knowledge gained thereby will materially assist him in his future work, in the comprehension and treatment of disease. This, at any rate, is the idea which has inspired the writers of the book. In the first edition of a book of this character, it is impossible to avoid faults both of omission and commission, which can only be brought to light when the book is actually used in practical classwork. Manual of Physiology by Gerald Francis Yeo Pdf

Excerpt from Manual of Physiology: Text-Book for Students of Medicine In carrying this desire into execution I have endeavored to avoid theories which have not borne the test of time, and such details of methods as are unnecessary for junior students. I do not give any history of how our knowledge has grown to its present stand-point; nor do I mention the names of the authorities upon whose writings my statements depend. I have also omitted the mention of exceptional points, been I find that exceptions are more easily remembered than the main facts from which they difi'er; and, since we must often be content with' the retention of the one or the other, I have tried to insure that it shall be the more important. Physiology by A. E. GUENTHER Pdf

Excerpt from Physiology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners IT was the aim of the authors in writing this work for its original edition to gather within brief compass those facts of Physiology with which medical students should be familiar in order that they might successfully pursue the more advanced courses of the medical curriculum. It was not the intention to produce a work of originality nor one which should take the place of more elaborate text-books in the instruction of students, but one offering a means of quickly reviewing the essential features of the subject. The demand which exhausted successive printings of the first edition indicates that the work answered its purpose as a brief exposition of Physiology suited to the needs of students and practitioners, and it is hoped that this new and thoroughly revised issue may meet with equal favor. A Manual of Physiology by George Neil Stewart Pdf

Excerpt from A Manual of Physiology: With Practical Exercises AT the present day, to teach Physiology by means of formal lectures and systematic text-books alone is no more satis factory than it would be to till the farms of America with the wooden plough of Bengal. Some benefit can certainly be gained from the mere reading of a good text-book or listening to a good lecturer; but the result will be meagre in comparison with the capabilities of the subject, and the knowledge thus acquired will be more likely to sink to the level of cram than to rise to the level of education. In this book an attempt has been made to interweave formal exposition with practical work. In the way my experience at the Harvard Medical School and the Western Reserve University has shown to be best suited to the needs and the opportunities of the American student. An arrangement of the Practical Exercises with reference to the systematic course has this great advantage - that by a little care it is possible to secure that the student shall be actually working at a given subject at the time it is being lectured on. Cross-reference from lecture-room to laboratory, and from laboratory to lecture-room, from the detailed discussion of the relations of a phenomenon to the living fact itself, is thus rendered easy, natural, and fruitful.
