One Drive in a Million: A Mile-by-Mile guide to Southwest Colorado's San Juan Skyway and Million Dollar Highway by Branson Reynolds Pdf

One of the most spectacular drives in North America, the San Juan Skyway is a 236 mile loop which winds through forests of aspen and pine, over high passes with stunning panoramic views of mountain ranges exceeding 14,000 feet in elevation, through historic mining towns which played important roles in the colorful history of Southwest Colorado, and past the World Heritage Site of Mesa Verde. In 1988 this drive was designated as one of 54 National Scenic Byways, and was later chosen #1 of 10 to be designated as All American Roads for their natural beauty and historical significance. Along the way you may see black bear or mountain lions crossing the highway or elk and deer grazing in the meadows. A portion of this route includes the famous Million Dollar Highway which negotiates the awesome Uncompahgre Gorge, high in the Rocky Mountains between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado.

Slumach's Gold by Rick Antonson,Brian Antonson Pdf

Slumach’s Gold chronicles what is possibly Canada’s greatest lost-mine story. It searches out the truth behind a Salish man’s hanging for murder in 1891 and tracks the intriguing legend about him that grew after his death. It was a legend that turned into a drama of international fascination when Slumach—the hanged criminal—was mysteriously linked to gold nuggets “the size of walnuts.” The stories claimed that Slumach had placed a curse on a hidden motherlode to protect it from interlopers and trespassers just before he plunged to his death “at the wrong end of a five-strand rope.” Although many have attempted to find Slumach’s gold over the past 100 years, following tantalizing clues that are part of the legend itself, none have succeeded—or have they? Rick Antonson, Mary Trainer and Brian Antonson have diligently sifted through history and myth, separating fact from fiction, but leaving the legend intact—along with the promise of gold yet to be found by some future gold seeker.

Gold at Fortymile Creek by Michael Gates Pdf

The book, based on the accounts of dozens of prospectors, follows the first gold-seekers from their arrival in 1873 until the stampede to the Klondike in 1896. Gates captures the essence of these early years of the gold rush, about which very little has been written. He chronicles the trials, hearbreaks, and successes of the unique and hardy individualists who searched for gold in the wilderness. With names like Swiftwater Bill, Crooked Leg Louie, Slobbery Tom, and Tin Kettle George, these men lived in total isolation beyond the borders of civilization. They were often eccentrics and outcasts, who shaped their own rules, their own justice, and their own social order.

A Short Account of West Africa's Gold Coast and Its Nature by Erick Tilleman Pdf

This book's very existence is significant, since the material is that of the end of the seventeenth century, the period when the dramatic changes that took place in the eighteenth century were beginning to materialize. Transatlantic slaving was to become the chief interest and the use of firearms was to become much more widespread. Tilleman's time on West Africa's Gold Coast came just after Jean Barbot's and coincided with that of Thomas Phillips and Willem Bosman. It is of interest to compare and contrast their reports to give us a fuller picture of events, practices, and allegations. Tilleman's text allows for a comparison of the areas in which they agree and where there are discrepancies, especially considering that these four men represent different European backgrounds, colored by their particular national interests. It is also important to note that the Europeans' headquarters on the coast were in different places and among different cultural groups and polities: Barbot and Phillips used Cape Coast, among the Fetu, as their home base; Bosman lived and worked at Elmina among the Fante; Tilleman worked at Christiansborg among the Gã and Akwamu. Tilleman's book also reveals, as do the other sources, prevailing attitudes and beliefs held by the Europeans, as they described the Africans and their lives. Since Tilleman's purpose was to produce a practical guide to sailing and trade, it was much easier for him to reiterate than investigate the general European attitudes toward, for example, religious practices, the character of the people at various places, or the supposed beliefs held by the Africans.

Nazi Gold - Latitude 55 by A. Jay Collins Pdf

In the waning days of World War II, a crafty Sicilian prospector and his mafia associates concoct a scheme to hide tons of Nazi gold, pilfered from their victims, in an aspiring gold mine in the mountains of British Columbia until it is called for. Decades later, a private organization contracted by a group based in Turkey is determined to find the gold and return it to the countries and the descendants of the people from whom it was stolen. In order to recover it and correct this historic injustice, they’ll have to battle secretive Swiss and German banks, the mafia, and even the Vatican, all of whom are seeking to either cover up their involvement in the crime or racing to reclaim the gold.
