The Black Stars Who Made Baseball Whole by Rick Swaine Pdf

For major league baseball, the decade following Jackie Robinson's 1947 debut was one of slow yet persistent change. Four other black players made their first, brief big-league appearances that year, followed by only two in 1948 and four in 1949. But by the end of 1959, 122 black ballplayers had made it to the big leagues. Like Robinson, their lives were made difficult off the field, and on it they dodged beanballs and spikes. This book brings attention to the accomplishments of this transitional generation of African American players--made up of men like Luscious Luke Easter, Sam "The Jet" Jethroe, and Sad Sam Jones--many of whom spent years in the minors, the Negro leagues, or both before getting their shot. Chapters on each season from 1947 to 1959 incorporate biographical and career profiles for 25 players who stood out during baseball's integration. A final chapter covers the outstanding minor league players who for various reasons never got a real chance to play major league ball. Appendices include a roster of black major leaguers from 1947 through 1959, a list of black-player firsts and statistics on the year-by-year population of black players in the majors.

Flare Stars in Star Clusters, Associations, and the Solar Vicinity by International Astronomical Union. Symposium Pdf

Some 70 papers present the flare star problem from both a physical and evolutionary aspect, and represent an interaction between investigators working on flare stars in clusters and associations, and those working on the UV Ceti stars in solar vicinity. The variety of perspectives reveal a physical similarity among several non-stable phenomena, and suggest that the different manifestations of stellar activity result from the release of some unknown kind of energy in the outer layers of young stars. The papers deal not only with different aspects of flare stars, but also with such related objects as T Tauri stars, fluors, and Herbig-Haro objects. Diamond Stars by Marc Peter Reyna,James Harmon Brown Pdf

Diamond Stars is a love story about Solly and Abby, a boy and a girl with a deep, abiding love for the game of baseball, thrown together by fate, luck and baseball cards to witness one of the signature achievements in baseball history: New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell striking out five future Hall-of-Famers in succession at the 1934 All-Star Game. Diamond Stars is a story about passions, perseverance and the strange, mystical role heroes play in our lives. It is also a story of baseball and the enduring hold it has on the people who play it, watch it and love it. Diamond Stars moves between two classic games, in 1934 and 1984, following Solly and Abby’s story with their future clouded by doubt and their salvation in the improbable hands of a man who lost as many games as he won. Solly is convinced of this. His job now is to convince Van Lingle Mungo.

The Day All the Stars Came Out by Lew Freedman Pdf

This is a history of major league baseball’s first All-Star game, originally conceived in 1933 as a one-time “Game of the Century” (including greats such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Carl Hubbell and Lefty Grove) to lift the spirits of the nation and its people in the midst of the Great Depression. The game was so successful that it became a yearly event and an integral part of the baseball season. The work covers the game, from the Chicago Tribune’s early advocacy for the contest through every play, and the later accomplishments of many of the individuals involved.

Stealing Games by Maury Klein Pdf

The 1911 New York Giants stole an astonishing 347 bases, a record that still stands more than a century later. That alone makes them special in baseball history, but as Maury Klein relates in Stealing Games they also embodied a rapidly changing America on the cusp of a faster, more frenetic pace of life dominated by machines, technology, and urban culture. Baseball, too, was evolving from the dead-ball to the live-ball era--the cork-centered ball was introduced in 1910 and structurally changed not only the outcome of individual games but the way the game itself was played, requiring upgraded equipment, new rules, and new ways of adjudicating. Changing performance also changed the relationship between management and players. The Giants had two stars--the brilliant manager John McGraw and aging pitcher Christy Mathewson--and memorable characters such as Rube Marquard and Fred Snodgrass; yet their speed and tenacity led to three pennants in a row starting in 1911. Stealing Games gives a great team its due and underscores once more the rich connection between sports and culture.

Herbig-Haro Flows and the Birth of Low Mass Stars by Bo Reipurth,Claude Bertout Pdf

Herbig-Haro objects were discovered 50 years ago, and during this half century they have developed from being mysterious small nebulae to be coming an important phenomenon in star formation. Indeed, HH flows are now recognized not only as fascinating astrophysical laboratories involving shock physics and chemistry, hydrodynamics and radiation processes, but it has gradually been realized that HH flows hold essential clues to the birth and early evolution of low mass stars. IAU Symposium No. 182 on Herbig-Haro Flows and the Birth of Low Mass Stars were held from January 20 to 24, 1997 in Chamonix in the french alps. A total of 178 researchers from 26 countries met to discuss our present level of understanding of Herbig-Haro flows and their relation to disk accretion events and T Tauri winds and other outflow phenomena like molecular outflows, embedded molecular hydrogen flows and radio jets. The present book contains the manuscripts from the oral contributions of the symposium. The poster papers were printed in a separate volume Low Mass Star Formation - from Infall to Outflow, edited by Fabien Malbet and Alain Castets, which was distributed at the beginning of the meeting. Together these two books document the vigorous state and the scientific appeal which research into Herbig-Haro flows and related issues in star formation enjoys today, observationally as well as theoretically.

Oscar Charleston by Jeremy Beer Pdf

2020 SABR Seymour Medal 2019 CASEY Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year Buck O’Neil once described him as “Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, and Tris Speaker rolled into one.” Among experts he is regarded as the best player in Negro Leagues history. During his prime he became a legend in Cuba and one of black America’s most popular figures. Yet even among serious sports fans, Oscar Charleston is virtually unknown today. In a long career spanning from 1915 to 1954, Charleston played against, managed, befriended, and occasionally fought men such as Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Jesse Owens, Roy Campanella, and Branch Rickey. He displayed tremendous power, speed, and defensive instincts along with a fierce intelligence and commitment to his craft. Charleston’s competitive fire sometimes brought him trouble, but more often it led to victories, championships, and profound respect. While Charleston never played in the Major Leagues, he was a trailblazer who became the first black man to work as a scout for a Major League team when Branch Rickey hired him to evaluate players for the Dodgers in the 1940s. From the mid?1920s on, he was a player?manager for several clubs. In 1932 he joined the Pittsburgh Crawfords and would manage the club many consider the finest Negro League team of all time, featuring five future Hall of Famers, including himself, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, Judy Johnson, and Satchel Paige. Charleston’s combined record as a player, manager, and scout makes him the most accomplished figure in black baseball history. His mastery of the quintessentially American sport under the conditions of segregation revealed what was possible for black achievement, bringing hope to millions. Oscar Charleston introduces readers to one of America’s greatest and most fascinating athletes.
