The Promising Future of Public Health by Irving I. Kessler Pdf

Epidemiology originated during the Middle Ages when science-based medicine arose and medical schools were established. Clinically trained epidemiologists began to advance knowledge on human disease through intensive observations of their patients over time. Modern computing was quickly adopted by epidemiologists as an essential tool of modern medicine. Despite its key role in medicine, epidemiology-based teaching and research is now faltering, as professors emphasize the difficulties, rather than the advantages, of this critical branch of medicine. No other medical specialty can accurately track diseases in populations at risk, or evaluate the cost and quality of medical care. It can create clinical information systems for practising physicians, assess health risks in large population groups and evaluate unique subgroups at risk of disease. A major lesson from the COVID-19 experience is that enhancing the work of medical epidemiologists is crucial to the future of public health and clinical medicine. How this goal can be achieved is the central theme of this volume.

A Promising Life: Coming of Age with America by Emily Arnold McCully Pdf

Award-winning author Emily McCully's most adventurous book to date draws a dramatic portrait of life in nineteenth century America. For as long as he can remember, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau has been told that a promising future lies ahead of him. After all, his mother is the great Sacagawea, who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their expedition of discovery. And thanks to his mother, Baptiste's life changes forever when Captain Clark offers him an education in the bustling new city of St. Louis. There, his mother charges him to "learn everything" -- reading, writing, languages, mathematics. His life becomes a whirl of new experiences: lessons, duels, dances, elections. He makes friends and undertakes unexpected journeys to far-off places. But he also witnesses the injustices Clark, as a US agent for Indian Affairs, forces upon the Osage, the Arikara, the Mandan, and so many others. He sees the effect of what some call "progress" on the land and on the people who have lived there for generations. And he must choose what path he will take and what place he will have in a rapidly changing society.

Saving Social by Ryan Holmes Pdf

Social media is broken -- or at least it appears that way. To many, the industry seems to have come undone, but what if, in fact, it's just coming together? As social media has become integrated into both business and mainstream culture, we've seen euphoric novelty give way to hysteria around the ill effects of misinformation, data privacy and polarizing echo chambers. Now, as everything from the ethics behind algorithms to the legal shield social networks use to protect themselves from liability is being discussed at the highest levels of government, many are wondering if social media's problems are simply too great to fix. Against the backdrop of a global crisis, Ryan Holmes, the Founder and Chairman of Hootsuite, takes a sobering look at concerns surrounding the social media industry today and offers an optimistic view of where it's headed. Holmes argues that the hysteria we're experiencing now is part of a natural lifecycle all game-changing communication technologies go through before finding balance. As North America faces a global pandemic and societal unrest, social media has become more crucial than ever. Holmes' incisive combination of history and future-think will help industry insiders and average readers alike understand the potential and pitfalls of social media and map out a plan to thrive in the years ahead.

Amaranthus: A Promising Crop of Future by Saubhik Das Pdf

This book serves the larger community of plant researchers working on the taxonomy, species delimitation, phylogeny, and biogeography of pseudo-cereals, with a special emphasis on amaranths. It also provides extensive information on the nutritive value of underutilized pseudo-cereals, the goal being to broaden the vegetable list. Amaranthus is a cosmopolitan genus of annual or short-lived perennial plants. Most of the species are summer annual weeds and are commonly referred to as pigweed. Only a few are cultivated as vitamin-rich vegetables and ornamentals. The protein-rich seeds of a handful of species, known as grain amaranths, are consumed as pseudo-cereals. Amaranthusmanifests considerable morphological diversity among and even within certain species, and there is no general agreement on the taxonomy or number of species. Currently the genus Amaranthus is believed to include three recognized subgenera and 70 species. Amatanthus is considered to potentially offer an alternative crop in temperate and tropical climate. The classification of amaranths is ambiguous due to the lack of discrete and quantitative species-defining characteristics and the wide range of phenotypic plasticity, as well as introgression and hybridization involving weedy and crop species. It is a known fact that both vegetable and grain amaranths have evolved from their respective weed progenitors. There are more than 180 different weed species that are herbicide-resistant, and amaranths are considered to be leading members of the resistant biotypes. Amaranth species provide ample scope for investigating herbicide resistance mechanisms. Amaranths also show variability in terms of their mating behavior and germplasm, adaptability to different growing conditions, and wide range of variability in sexual systems, from monoecy to dioecy. A solid grasp of these parameters is essential to the future utilization of amaranths as super crops. There are quite a few amaranth research center and germplasm collections all over the world that maintain and evaluate working germplasms. To date, the genetic improvement of amaranths has primarily involved the application of conventional selection methods. But advances in genomics and biotechnology have dramatically enriched the potential to manipulate the amaranth genome, especially improving the amount and availability of nutrients. In conclusion, the book covers all aspects of amaranths, including their food value, significance as vegetables and pseudo-cereals, taxonomy, phylogeny, germplasm variability, breeding behavior and strategies, cultivation practices, and variability in terms of their sexual systems. It offers a valuable resource for all students, researchers and experts working in the field of plant taxonomy and diversity.

Inside the Presidential Debates by Newton N. Minow,Craig L. LaMay Pdf

Newton Minow’s long engagement with the world of television began nearly fifty years ago when President Kennedy appointed him chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. As its head, Minow would famously dub TV a “vast wasteland,” thus inaugurating a career dedicated to reforming television to better serve the public interest. Since then, he has been chairman of PBS and on the board of CBS and elsewhere, but his most lasting contribution remains his leadership on televised presidential debates. He was assistant counsel to Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson when Stevenson first proposed the idea of the debates in 1960; he served as cochair of the presidential debates in 1976 and 1980; and he helped create and is currently vice chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates, which has organized the debates for the last two decades. Written with longtime collaborator Craig LaMay, this fascinating history offers readers for the first time a genuinely inside look into the origins of the presidential debates and the many battles—both legal and personal—that have determined who has been allowed to debate and under what circumstances. The authors do not dismiss the criticism of the presidential debates in recent years but do come down solidly in favor of them, arguing that they are one of the great accomplishments of modern American electoral politics. As they remind us, the debates were once unique in the democratic world, are now emulated across the globe, and they offer the public the only real chance to see the candidates speak in direct response to one another in a discussion of major social, economic, and foreign policy issues. Looking to the challenges posed by third-party candidates and the emergence of new media such as YouTube, Minow and LaMay ultimately make recommendations for the future, calling for the debates to become less formal, with candidates allowed to question each other and citizens allowed to question candidates directly. They also explore the many ways in which the Internet might serve to broaden the debates’ appeal and informative power. Whether it’s Clinton or Obama vs. McCain, Inside the Presidential Debates will be welcomed in 2008 by anyone interested in where this crucial part of our democracy is headed—and how it got there.

The Promising Future of Jatropha Curcas by Maira Rubi Segura-Campos,David Betancur-Ancona Pdf

J. curcas L. is a small or large shrub tree, up to 57m tall, belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family which consists of around 800 species and belongs to around321 genera. Jatropha is a drought resistant crop that has a life expectancy of up to fifty years. It is also known as Ratanjayot and the physic nut. It can grow in arid, semiarid and wasteland climates. The plant has its native distributional range in Mexico, Central America, Africa, Brazil, the Indian subcontinent, Peru, Argentina and Paraguay. J. curcas offers many benefits. Some of these benefits include: It costs almost nothing to grow; it is perennial, drought resistant and adapted for marginal land, and seems to be adequate for land reclamation; it can be grown almost anywhere even in sandy, saline, or otherwise infertile soil; it is easy to propagate; it is capable of stabilising sand dunes, acting as a windbreaker and combating desertification; it naturally repels both animals and insects; it does not exhaust the nutrients in the land; it does not require expensive crop rotation; it does not require fertilisers; and it grows quickly and establishes itself easily, among many other beneficial qualities. Currently, J. curcas can produce 2,000 L/ha oil annually. Presently, the production and usage of J. curcas oil is no longer confined to a specific geographic region or a limited number of end-products. Large quantities of J. curcas oil are consumed all over the world as ingredients of numerous products manufactured by a large number of industries. J. curcas was found to be suitable as a non-edible vegetable oil feedstock in oleochemical industries (biodiesel, fatty acids, soap, cosmetics, paraffin, fatty nitrogenous derivatives, surfactants and detergents, etc.). To supply J. curcas oil and its derived ingredients to these industries and their customers, an integrated J. curcas oil production has been developed over the years. Globally, J. curcas has created an interest for researchers because it is a non-edible oil, does not create a food versus fuel conflict, and can be used to produce biodiesel with same or better performance results when tested in diesel engines. For the above mentioned, the purpose of this book is to provide an insight into the possibilities of applying J. curcas for commercial purposes. Emphasis will be placed on the biology, chemistry and potential uses of J. curcas and its derivatives.

Biofuels from Algae by Kuan-Yeow Show,Duu-Jong Lee Pdf

Extensive effort is being made globally to develop various biofuels as an inexhaustible and renewable energy source. Biofuels are viewed as promising alternatives to conventional fossil fuels because they have the potential to eliminate major environmental problems such as global warming and climate change created by fossil fuels. Among the still-developing biofuel technologies, biodiesel production from algae offers a good prospect for large-scale practical use, considering the fact that algae are capable of producing much more yield than other biofuels such as corn and soybean crops. Although research on algae-based biofuel is still in its developing stage, extensive work on laboratory- and pilot-scale algae-harvesting systems with promising prospects has been reported. This chapter presents a discussion of the literature review of recent advances in algal biomass harvesting. The chapter focuses on stability and separability of algae and algae-harvesting methods. Challenges and prospects of algae harvesting are also outlined. The review aims to provide useful information for future development of efficient and commercially viable algal biodiesel production.
