A Short History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Walter Cochrane Bronson Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived 3 but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chie y descriptive 3 elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. A History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by William B. Cairns Pdf

Excerpt from A History of American Literature This book attempts to trace within reasonable compass the course of literary development in America, and to present the most significant facts regarding American authors and their works. It places greatest emphasis on general move ments because American literature is first of all important as an expression of national life. There are few American writings that require careful analysis and merit intensive study as masterpieces. But in a nation where education has from the first been so generally diffused, literary attempts of slight artistic merit may reflect not only the obvious changes in national life and ideals, but subtler tendencies and aspira tions. For this reason attention is given not only to the few greater writers, but to many others whose works, though less important in themselves, are sometimes even more sig nificant. The plan of the book and the decision what to include and what to exclude have been influenced by the author's experiences with college classes but an attempt has been made to meet the wants of the general reader as well as those of the systematic student. In tracing tendencies and movements it has been necessary to adopt a geographical classification of authors; and this has sometimes been carried beyond the point where it is significant. It is a matter of the greatest importance whether an author represents the Spirit of Puritan New England or the spirit of Cavalier Virginia; it is of little importance whether he chances to write in New Hampshire or in Ver mont. For convenience, however, smaller as well as larger groupings have been made on the basis of residence. In adopting this plan the author wishes to disclaim any intention of over-emphasizing sectional differences. History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Reuben Post Halleck Pdf

Excerpt from History of American Literature The wide use of the author's History of English Literature the favor with which it has been received in all parts of the United States, and the number of earnest requests for a History of American Literature on the same plan, have led to the writing of this book. It has not appeared sooner because the author has followed his rule of making a careful first-hand study, not only of all the matter discussed, but also of a far greater amount, which, although it must be omitted from a condensed textbook, is, nevertheless, necessary as a background for judgment and selection. The following chapters describe the greatest achievements in American literature from the earliest times until the present. Many pupils fail to obtain a clear idea of great American authors and literary movements because textbook writers and teachers ignore the element of truth in the old adage, "The half is greater than the whole," and dwell too much on minor authors and details, which could reasonably be expected to interest only a specialist. In the following pages especial attention has been paid, not only to the individual work of great authors, but also to literary movements, ideals, and animating principles, and to the relation of all these to English literature. The author has further aimed to make this work both interesting and suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Brief History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by William P. Trent Pdf

Excerpt from A Brief History of American Literature In this book, which is designed for the use of schools, I - have endeavoured to furnish a condensed account of the development of American literature, rather than a series of connected essays on leading American authors. At the same time I have tried to mention no writer or book devoid of a fair amount of significance, and I have also had it in mind to treat the more important authors on a scale sufficiently extended to suit the needs of the average class. I have aimed to minimize tentative criticism and to give only such details of historical setting as could not well be spared. I have condensed the bibliographical information to dimensions more or less proportionate with the resources of school libraries and have divided it into sections according to chapters. The period from 1866 to the present day has been sketched in a chapter, fuller treatment of writers, many of whom are still living, not seeming advisable in view of the difficulty of maintaining an impartial attitude toward contemporaries. An appendix gives important dates, which may be used in lieu of those scattered through the text. Topics for essays and class reports will be often suggested by the paragraph headings, and teachers may sometimes find it advantageous, when time permits, to have reports made on writers and books mentioned in the Appendix but not in the text, as well as on topics treated more fully in my larger book, "A History of American Literature, 1607-1865" (1903, Appleton). A History of American Literature Since 1870 (Classic Reprint) by Fred Lewis Pattee Pdf

Excerpt from A History of American Literature Since 1870 It has been our object to determine this new period and to study its distinguishing characteristics. We have divided the literary history of the century into three periods, denominating them as the Knickerbocker Period, the New England Period, and the National Period, and we have made the last to begin shortly after the close of the Civil War with those new forces and new ideals and broadened views that grew out of that mighty struggle. Excerpt from A Student's History of American Literature Finally, let no teacher of American literature con sider it a part of his professional duty to depreciate or deprecate the work of our American writers. It re presents a substantial and respectable achievement it may well inspire a reasonable patriotic pride in the minds of our youth; it is, at the present time, as full of promise for literary art in the future as is the na tional literature of any land. An Introduction to American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Henry Spackman Pancoast Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to American Literature The plan and purpose of this book can be stated in a few words. It is intended as a companion-book to my Introduction to English Literature, and it has been prepared - so far as the nature of the subject permitted - according to the same general scheme. The first thing required of a book of this character is that it shall really bring the reader into vital rela tion with the best works in the literature of which it treats, - that it shall induce him to read or re-read them with both delight and understanding. I have tried to do this by treating our greater authors at comparative length; by making their personality as real and living as I could; by adding some critical discussion of. Their chief works; and by furnishing study lists containing suggestions for reading and bibliographical references. Choice Specimens of American Literature, and Literary Reader by Benjamin N. Martin Pdf

Excerpt from Choice Specimens of American Literature, and Literary Reader: Being Selections From the Chief American Writers The former edition of this work was prepared simply as a supple ment to Shaw's Choice Specimens of English Literature. Though it extended to a larger size than had been anticipated, and was therefore issued in a separate volume, it still proved so straitened in point of space as to be in some important respects defective and inadequate. The decision of the publishers to reprint it in an enlarged form furnishes to the editor a welcome opportunity to rect its deficiencies, and to make several important emendations. A History of American Literature, 1607-1865 (Classic Reprint) by William Peterfield Trent Pdf

Excerpt from A History of American Literature, 1607-1865 While this volume has been prepared in the main along the lines laid down by its predecessors in the series to which it belongs, it differs from most of them in at least one important particular. A somewhat enlarged scale of treatment has been employed. This was necessi tated by the facts that American literature, so far as concerns not merely the outside world, but the American people themselves, is a creation of the nineteenth cen tury, and that it was impossible to deal satisfactorily with living writers; in other words, with the work of one generation out of three. To have treated so callow a literature on the scale adopted by the' writers of the volumes dealing with the mature and extensive litera tures of F rance and England would have meant the wri ting of an essay, not of a book. Readers in History by James L. Machor Pdf

Nineteenth-century America witnesses an unprecedented rise in reading activity as a result of increasing literacy, advances in printing and book production, and improvements in transporting printed material. As the act of reading took on new cultural and intellectual significance, American writers had to adjust to changes in their relationship with a growing audience. Calling for a new emphasis on historical analysis, Readers in History reconsiders reader-response and reception approaches to the shifting contexts of reading in nineteenth-century America. James L. Machor and his contirbutors dispute the "essentializing tendency" of much reader-response criticism to date, arguing that reading and the textual construction of audience can best be understood in light of historically specific interpretive practices, ideological frames, and social conditions. Employing a variety of perspectives and methods—including feminism, deconstruction, and cultural criticsim—the essays in this volume demonstrate the importance of historical inquiry for exploring the dynamics of audience engagement.

Excerpt from Reading Courses in American Literature Frequent inquiries by members of reading circles, by college students, and others, for a systematic course of reading in the American Classics have led the author to the publication of the following pages, originally prepared for use with his elective courses. An Introduction to the Study of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Brander Matthews Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of American Literature This book is intended as an introduction to the study of American literature. Although the chapters on the separate authors are wholly distinct, they have been so planned that each of them prepares the way for its suc cessor, and that all of them together outline the changing circumstances under which American literature has devel oped. An attempt has been made to show how each of the chief American authors influenced his time, and how he in turn was influenced by it; and also to indicate how each of them was related to the others, both personally and artistically. Bearing in mind the fact that the student needs to have his attention centered on vital points, all dates and all proper names, and all titles of books not absolutely essen tial, have been rigorously omitted. Interest has thus been concentrated on the literary career of each of the greater writers and on their practice of the literary art, in the hope and expectation that the student will be encouraged and stimulated to read their works for his own pleasure. After the consideration of these more important authors, one by one, the writers of less consequence have been discussed briefly in a single Chapter; and in like manner a single chapter has been devoted to a summary considera tion of the condition of our literature at the beginning Of the twentieth century. NO living author is named in the text. To arouse the student's interest in the authors as actual men, the illustrations chosen have been confined to por traits and views, and to facsimiles of manuscripts. To enable him to see for himself the successive stages of the growth of American literature, and to let him dis cover how the authors sometimes came one after an other and sometimes worked side by side, there has been appended also a chronological table of the chief dates in our literary history. As mere text-book instruction can never be an adequate substitute for the student's own acquaintance with the actual works of the authors discussed, there have been annexed to every chapter bibliographical notes calling attention to the editions most suitable for the student's reading, and also to the best biographies and to a few of the most suggestive criticisms.
