What Do Corporations Want? by Timothy Kuhn Pdf

'Corporate purpose' has become a battleground for stakeholders’ competing desires. Some argue that corporations must simply generate profit; others suggest that we must make them create social change. Leading organization studies scholar Timothy Kuhn argues that this 'either/or' thinking dramatically oversimplifies matters: today’s corporations must be many things, all at once. Kuhn offers a bold new Communicative Theory of the Firm to highlight the authority that creates corporations’ identities and activities. The theory provides a roadmap for navigating that battleground of competing desires to produce more responsive corporations. Drawing on communicative and new materialist theorizing, along with three insightful case studies, this book thoroughly redefines our understandings of what corporations are 'for'.

The Sustainability and Spread of Organizational Change by David A. Buchanan,Louise Fitzgerald,Diane Ketley Pdf

This important book examines issues affecting the sustainability and spread of new working practices. The question of why good ideas do not spread, ‘the best practices puzzle’, has been widely recognized. But the ‘improvement evaporation effect’, where successful changes are discontinued, has attracted less attention. Keeping things the way they are has been seen as an organizational problem to be resolved, not a condition to be achieved. This is one of the first major studies of the sustainability of change focusing on the example of the NHS, by a unique team of health service and academic researchers. The findings may apply to a variety of other settings. The agenda set out in 2000 in The NHS Plan is perhaps the largest organization development programme ever undertaken, in any sector, anywhere. The NHS thus offers a valuable ‘living laboratory’ for the study of change. This text shows that sustainability and spread are influenced by a range of issues - contextual, managerial, political, individual, and temporal. Developing a processual perspective, this fresh analysis considers policy implications, and strategies for managing sustainability and spread. This book will be essential reading for students, managers, and researchers concerned with the effective implementation of organizational change.

The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Behavior by Stewart R Clegg,Cary L Cooper Pdf

`The Sage Handbook of Organizational Behaviour is a fine addition to past works of reference in the field, edited by two prominent scholars who are internationally known. Its approach is both critical and original in many incisive ways, aspiring to a cutting-edge coverage of the core and periphery of OB. Many of the chapter authors stick their necks out and avoid the more obvious, conventional expositions of their topic. It covers a wide range of topics of potential use to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of the subject, as well as academics, researchers and practitioners. It will be of particular interest to those on MBA and DBA courses. It can be strongly recommended as an essential faculty library purchase, as well as a useful tool for individuals interested in having such a guide to the subject at hand′ - Professor Malcolm Warner, Emeritus Fellow, Wolfson College and Judge Business School, University of Cambridge `This important new Handbook brings together for the first time a collection of major contributions on macro-organizational behaviour. This area of study is concerned with the ways in which the people who inhabit organizations make sense of their situations, contributing to the distinctive character of those organizations through their actions and struggles. The conventional literature, artificially divided between micro organizational behaviour and organization theory, has under-explored this obvious conjunction between people and organizations. Stewart Clegg and Cary Cooper perform a great service in helping to make good the deficiency′ - John Child, Professor of Commerce, Birmingham Business School `Thorough and comprehensive. Thoughtful critique and new insights′ - Chris Argyris, James B. Conant Professor, Emeritus, Harvard University In this second volume of The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Behavior, the focus is on macro-organizational behavior, revealing ways in which the person and group affect the organization. Chapters are written by eminent and upcoming scholars in the field, each presenting on the major issues in organizational behavior as seen with a macro-lens. The Handbook is divided into three parts, the first introducing and framing the field; the second part considering the various organizational processes involved, including learning, teamwork, identity and power, among others, while finally Part Three introduces organizing on a macro-scale, covering topics such as organizational change, design governance and globalization. The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Behavior: Macro Approaches is an essential resource for researchers and students across management and organization studies.

Higher Education: Handbook of Theory and Research by J.C. Smart Pdf

To recapitulate, Greeks differ from Independents and from the academy's value priorities, but for the most part these differences derive from antecedent charac teristics. Moreover, there are some grounds for speculating that these anteced ent differences reflect fundamental temperamental differences (extraversion and gregariousness mediated by social interaction, as opposed to interaction through ideas). Only to a limited degree does the Greek "system" appear to adversely affect the acquisition and assimilation of the academy's value priori ties; i.e., students as a whole, Greek and Independent alike, appear to become more independent, liberal, socially concerned, and culturally sophisticated by graduation. However, the Greek system's effect on the behavior of Greeks is more trou bling, an effect largely mediated by the use and abuse of alcohol and the relative absence of direct institutional supervision. Assuming the retention of the Greek system, then, the promotion of the acad emy's agenda appears dependent on (a) an understanding and accommodation of the personal characteristics of Greeks, using appropriate pedagogical meth ods to advance the academy's educational objectives, and (b) both educational and administrative/regulatory efforts to control the use and abuse of alcohol. With or without the Greek system, the advancement of the academy's agenda involves these considerations, since the characteristics of students as a whole encompass the characteristics emphasized among Greeks.

Strategy and Organization by Loizos Heracleous Pdf

"Examining some of the new and emerging issues in strategic management, Loizos Heracleous offers a fresh approach to the established ideas of strategy. Beginning with the historical development of the strategy field, including the influence of industrial organization and the resource-based view, he develops a new perspective labeled an "organizational action" view of strategy. This approach is theoretically underlain by organization theory and takes seriously such issues as the role of agency, the need for a longitudinal focus on process, the complexities of strategy implementation, and organizational facets such as strategic choice, organizational culture, organizational discourses and learning. Combining theoretical subtlety with an applied orientation, Heracleous examines topical areas such as corporate governance, inter-organization networks, and organizing for the future. With original research and extensive surveys of the strategy literature, combined with a strong practical orientation, this book is ideal for MBA students, strategy researchers, and the more thoughtful practitioner."--BOOK JACKET.
