A Room with a View Illustrated by E M Forster Pdf

A Room with a View is a 1908 novel by English writer E. M. Forster, about a young woman in the restrained culture of Edwardian era England. Set in Italy and England, the story is both a romance and a humorous critique of English society at the beginning of the 20th century. Merchant Ivory produced an award-winning film adaptation in 1985.The Modern Library ranked A Room with a View 79th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century (1998).The novel is set in the early 1900s as upper-middle class English women are beginning to lead more independent, adventurous lives. In the first part, Miss Lucy Honeychurch is touring Italy with her overly-fussy spinster cousin and chaperone, Miss Charlotte Bartlett. The novel opens in Florence with the women complaining about their rooms at the Pensione Bertolini. They were promised rooms with a view of the River Arno but instead have ones overlooking a drab courtyard. Another guest, Mr Emerson, interrupts their "peevish wrangling" by spontaneously offering to swap rooms. He and his son, George, both have rooms with views of the Arno, and he argues, "Women like looking at a view; men don't." Charlotte rejects the offer, partly because she looks down on the Emersons' unconventional behaviour and because she fears it would place them under an "unseemly obligation". However, another guest, Mr Beebe, an Anglican clergyman, persuades Charlotte to accept the offer; Charlotte suggests that the Emersons are socialists. The following day, Lucy spends a "long morning" in the Basilica of Santa Croce, accompanied by Miss Eleanor Lavish, a novelist who promises to lead her on an adventure. Lavish confiscates Lucy's Baedeker guidebook, proclaiming she will show Lucy the "true Italy". On the way to Santa Croce, the two take a wrong turn and get lost. After drifting for hours through various streets and piazzas, they eventually make it to the square in front of the church, only for Lavish (who still has Lucy's Baedeker) to abandon the younger woman to pursue an old acquaintance.

We Are All Good People Here by Susan Rebecca White Pdf

From the author of A Place at the Table and A Soft Place to Land, an “intense, complex, and wholly immersive” (Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times bestselling author) multigenerational novel that explores the complex relationship between two very different women and the secrets they bequeath to their daughters. Eve Whalen, privileged child of an old-money Atlanta family, meets Daniella Gold in the fall of 1962, on their first day at Belmont College. Paired as roommates, the two become fast friends. Daniella, raised in Georgetown by a Jewish father and a Methodist mother, has always felt caught between two worlds. But at Belmont, her bond with Eve allows her to finally experience a sense of belonging. That is, until the girls’ expanding awareness of the South’s systematic injustice forces them to question everything they thought they knew about the world and their places in it. Eve veers toward radicalism—a choice pragmatic Daniella cannot fathom. After a tragedy, Eve returns to Daniella for help in beginning anew, hoping to shed her past. But the past isn’t so easily buried, as Daniella and Eve discover when their daughters are endangered by secrets meant to stay hidden. Spanning more than thirty years of American history, from the twilight of Kennedy’s Camelot to the beginning of Bill Clinton’s presidency, We Are All Good People Here is “a captivating…meaningful, resonant story” (Emily Giffin, author of All We Ever Wanted) about two flawed but well-meaning women clinging to a lifelong friendship that is tested by the rushing waters of history and their own good intentions.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW & HOWARDS END by E. M. Forster Pdf

A Room with a View – When Lucy Honeychurch embarks on a journey of a lifetime to Italy, little does she know that she would fall for the reckless man George, with whom she and co-traveller had exchanged the room with in Florence. In spite of her self-denial about her growing attraction to George Lucy knows in her heart that she cannot marry another man, let alone Cecil Vyse, who is not only downright obnoxious but also overbearing. This book is a classic romance which has also been adapted into a highly successful movie featuring Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Maggie Smith and Daniel Day-Lewis. Howards End - The story revolves around three families in England at the beginning of the 20th century: the Wilcoxes, rich capitalists with a fortune made in the colonies; the half-German Schlegel siblings (Margaret, Helen, and Tibby), whose cultural pursuits have much in common with the Bloomsbury Group; and the Basts, an impoverished young couple from a lower-class background. As fate would have it, their lives are going to be intertwined in such a manner that the secret passions and flying tempers would bring each of the family to the verge of ruin. Can they survive this vortex or will they be ruined forever?

A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf Pdf

A Room of One’s Own is an essay written by Virginia Woolf. It was published in 1929 and is based on two lectures given by the author in 1928 at two colleges for women at Cambridge. In this famous essay, Woolf addressed the status of women, and women artists in particular. In this essay, the author also asserts that a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write. According to Woolf, women’s creativity has been curtailed due to centuries of prejudice and financial and educational disadvantages. To emphasize her view, she offers the example of an imaginary gifted but uneducated sister of William Shakespeare, who, discouraged from all eventually kills herself. Woolf celebrates the work of women who have overcome that tradition and become writers, including Jane Austen, George Eliot, and the Brontë sisters, Anne, Charlotte, and Emily. In the final section Woolf suggests that great minds are neutral and argues that intellectual freedom requires financial freedom. The author entreats her audience to write not only fiction but poetry, criticism, and scholarly works as well.

The Sheik by E. M. Hull Pdf

The Sheik (1919) is a romance novel by English author E.M. Hull. Written while the author’s husband was serving in the Great War, The Sheik launched Hull’s career as a bestselling author of romance fiction, selling millions of copies following the release of a 1921 film of the same name. Part of a tradition of Orientalist fiction, The Sheik has proven as controversial as it has been popular, and serves now as a reminder of the ways in which British subjects imagined themselves in relation to the colonial world. In an Algerian city, the young Diana Mayo prepares for a month-long journey through the desert. Despite warnings from family and friends, she departs with her Arab guide. Surrounded by endless swaths of sand, Diana is soon kidnapped by Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan, who has bribed her guide to abandon her. Taken to his camp, Diana is repeatedly raped over a period of weeks, and soon gives up hope of ever escaping. After a thwarted attempt at stealing one of the Sheik’s horses, she slowly begins to fall in love with Ben Hassan, but realizes she must hide her feelings from a man who views her solely as an object of desire. As months go by, Diana learns the tragic truth behind the Sheik’s hatred of the English, and the two begin to grow close. When she is kidnapped by a rival, however, Ben Hassan must risk his life in order to save her. The Sheik is a bestselling romance novel by a master of English popular fiction. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of E.M. Hull’s The Sheik is a classic of English romance fiction reimagined for modern readers.

The Cot in the Living Room by Hilda Eunice Burgos Pdf

A young Dominican American girl in New York City moves from jealousy to empathy as her parents babysit children whose families work overnight shifts in this honest and warm picture book debut. Night after night, a young girl watches her mami set up a cot in the living room for guests in their Washington Heights apartment, like Raquel (who's boring) and Edgardo (who gets crumbs everywhere). She resents that they get the entire living room with a view of the George Washington Bridge, while all she gets is a tiny bedroom with a view of her sister (who snores). Until one night when no one comes, and it's finally her chance! But as it turns out, sleeping on the cot in the living room isn't all she thought it would be. With charming text by Hilda Eunice Burgos and whimsical illustrations by Gaby D'Alessandro, The Cot in the Living Room is a celebration of the ways a Dominican American community takes care of one another while showing young readers that sometimes the best way to be a better neighbor is by imagining how it feels to spend a night sleeping on someone else's pillow.
