A Selected Bibliography of the Religious Denominations of the United States (Classic Reprint) by George Franklin Bowerman Pdf

Excerpt from A Selected Bibliography of the Religious Denominations of the United States This list is designed to furnish a guide to the study of the churches and religious denominations of the United States. This purpose is best served by a selected list rather than by a complete bibliography. It aims to pre sent to the student, in systematic form, references to the best books on the history, doctrines and polity of each church. Wherever year-books or journals of conferences are published by a denomination or in its interest, these are recorded as furnishing valuable statistical information. A few of the most eminent or most representative weekly journals and the leading church reviews are included. In all cases where obtainable, publisher, place and date of publication and price have been given. It 18 thought that this little list will be of value to clergymen, theological seminaries and Christian workers generally. In attempting to give to each student a list that will not only help him to understand his own de nomination better, but will guide him to the best that has been written about other denominations, my underly ing purpose has been to contribute something to church union, and still more to Christian unity. The Religious Denominations in the United States by Joseph Belcher Pdf

Excerpt from The Religious Denominations in the United States: Their History, Doctrine, Government and Statistics We have no disposition to enter largely on a review of our performance. Pro bably every reader will find something or other which he might wish to be different; and in such a wish every reader may be right but the author asks only that each reader will give him credit for doing his best, and that each will believe the writer had a reason for whatever he has done, and for the precise manner in which it has been performed. An Original History of the Religious Denominations at Present Existing in the United States (Classic Reprint) by Israel Daniel Rupp Pdf

Excerpt from An Original History of the Religious Denominations at Present Existing in the United States The projector and compiler of this work, while examining manv years since Histories of Religions, and hearing numerous com plaints by ministers and lay members of different denominations, that such books had unjustly represented their religion, was forcibly im pressed, that a work like the one now oflered to the public, was desi rable and much needed: he then conceived the plan of obtaining the history of each denomination from the pen of some one of its most distinguished ministers or professors; thus affording each sect the opportunity of giving its own history - considering that a work thus prepared must be entirely free from the faults of misrepresentation, so generally brought against books of this character. Religion in America by Robert Baird Pdf

Excerpt from Religion in America: Or an Account of the Origin, Relation to the State, and Present Condition of the Evangelical Churches in the United States; With Notices of the Unevangelical Denominations And although the well-informed American reader will see many things in this book with which he is already familiar, yet it is presumed he will find some things, especially taken in the connexion in which, they are presented, that may both interest and profit him. There is no work among us that goes over the whole ground which the author has attempted to survey and de scribe in this book. At first he thought of abridging certain portions, especially the first, fourth, and fifth books but he was dissuaded from this by the publishers, who pre ferred to give it entire, and to put it at a price which would place it within the reach of all who might wish to have it. The Churches and Sects of the United States by P. Douglass Gorrie Pdf

Excerpt from The Churches and Sects of the United States: Containing a Brief Account of the Origin, History, Doctrines, Church Government, Mode of Worship, Usages, and Statistics of Each Religious Denomination, So Far as Known In preparing this small work for the press, the author deems it proper to state that its compilation has cost him no small pains on account of the large number of works to which he found it necessary to refer for facts, doctrines, and statistics. The principal books of reference to which he acknowledges his indebtedness, are Rupp's History of Religious Denominations, Evans's History of Christian Sects, Goodrich's History of Denominations, Buck's Theological Dictionary, Watson's Theological Dictionary, and a variety of denominational works too numerous to mention. Source Book and Bibliographical Guide for American Church History (Classic Reprint) by Peter G. Mode Pdf

Excerpt from Source Book and Bibliographical Guide for American Church History Through the publication of several source collections, much has been done to assist fthe student of American political, social and economic history. But no corresponding assistance has been given to such as are interested in the more specifically religious history of our nation. It is true of course, that for the colonial period, political history to a considerable degree resolves itself into the religious and that, therefore, the source books already published contain much material that is serviceable to the church historian. For the national period, however, with its multiplication of church organization, its controversies and divisions, its nation-wide revivals, and its mission ary extension at home and abroad, no source material has been assembled for convenient access. Hence the publication of this volume, which within the briefest possible space embodies the most significant documents for the entire-field of American church history. The compiler wishes to state that the viewpoint from which he has approached the subject is that of regarding the church, not as the custodian of some divinely-revealed deposit of truth, nor as super naturally detached from an environment that is ever affecting her inner life and organization. In his selection of material he has been guided by the principle of choosing only such documents as most significantly set forth the contribution that the church has made to the progress of American society, and the manner in which from time to time she has adjusted herself to her new and changing environ ment. Denominationalism, therefore, has been relegated to the background. Ardent denominationalists. Will find their respective bodies recognized only in so far as these have played a strategic part in the development of American Christianity as a whole. The only exception is that in the case of some small but significant groups, material has been inserted to remove prevailing ignorance or miscon ception.
