The Holiness of God by R.C. Sproul Pdf

Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.

George MacDonald in the Age of Miracles by Timothy Larsen Pdf

The Bible is full of miracles. Yet how do we make sense of them today? And where might we see miracles in our own lives? In this installment of the Hansen Lectureship series, historian and theologian Timothy Larsen considers the legacy of George MacDonald, the Victorian Scottish author and minister who is best known for his pioneering fantasy literature, which influenced authors such as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, G. K. Chesterton, and Madeleine L'Engle. Larsen explores how, throughout his life and writings, MacDonald sought to counteract skepticism, unbelief, naturalism, and materialism and to herald instead the reality of the miraculous, the supernatural, the wondrous, and the realm of the spirit. Based on the annual lecture series hosted at Wheaton College's Marion E. Wade Center, volumes in the Hansen Lectureship Series reflect on the imaginative work and lasting influence of seven British authors: Owen Barfield, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Dorothy L. Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams.

The Holy Spirit and Christian Experience by Simeon Zahl Pdf

In The Holy Spirit and Christian Experience, Simeon Zahl presents a fresh vision for Christian theology that foregrounds the relationship between theological ideas and the experiences of Christians. He argues that theology is always operating in a vibrant landscape of feeling and desiring, and shows that contemporary theology has often operated in problematic isolation from these experiential dynamics. He then argues that a theologically serious doctrine of the Holy Spirit not only authorizes but requires attention to Christian experience. Against this background, Zahl outlines a new methodological approach to Christian theology that attends to the emotional and experiential power of theological ideas. This methodology draws on recent interdisciplinary work on affect and emotion, which has shown that affects are powerful motivating realities that saturate all dimensions of human thinking and acting. In the process, Zahl also explains why contemporary theology has often been ambivalent about subjective experience, and demonstrates that current discourse about God's activity in the world is often artificially abstracted from experience and embodiment. At the heart of the book, Zahl proposes a new account of the theology of grace from this experiential and pneumatological perspective. Focusing on the work of the Holy Spirit in salvation and sanctification, he retrieves insights from Augustine, Luther, and Philip Melanchthon to present an affective and Augustinian vision of salvation as a pedagogy of desire. In articulating this vision, Zahl engages critically with recent emphasis on participation and theosis in Christian soteriology, and charts a new path forward for Protestant theology in a landscape hitherto dominated by the theological visions of Barth and Aquinas.

The Knowledge of the Holy by A. W. Tozer Pdf

True religion confronts earth with heaven and brings eternity to bear upon time. The messenger of Christ, though he speaks from God, must also, as the Quakers used to say, "speak to the condition" of his hearers; otherwise he will speak a language known only to himself. His message must be not only timeless but timely. He must speak to his own generation. The message of this book does not grow out of these times but it is appropriate to them. It is called forth by a condition which has existed in the Church for some years and is steadily growing worse. I refer to the loss of the concept of majesty from the popular religious mind. The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshipping men. This she has done not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more tragic.

The Pursuit of the Holy by Simon Ponsonby Pdf

"Be holy as I am holy," says the Lord. It's the most extravagant--and audacious--invitation ever sent: Or in the words of Jesus: "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." But can that really happen? Is holiness an achievable goal for sinful human beings? That's the ultimate focus of this thoughtful, thorough, and engaging study of what it means to be holy. Drawing on the Bible and Christian thinkers through the ages, Simon Ponsonby affirms that because of God's gracious love and desire for communion with us, he has done what is possible for us not only to pursue holiness, but to achieve it. While we can never count on attaining moral perfection in this life, we need not settle for less than increasing victory over sin. And as more and more Christians choose to partner with God in the ongoing process of sanctification, we set the stage for revival.

The Global City and the Holy City by Tovi Fenster Pdf

The Global City & the Holy City explores the local embodied knowledge of women and men of different national, cultural and ethnic identities and age groups, living in London and Jerusalem. Their narratives focus on the three main concepts of Comfort, Belonging and Commitment to the various spaces in which they live. By deconstructing the meanings of these three notions and analyzing their expression in cognitive temporal maps, The Global City & The Holy City examines the practicalities of incorporating this kind of local embodied knowledge into the professional planning and management of cities in the age of globalization.

What role can faith and religion play in our modern lives? In this thoughtful and inspiring new book, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller invites skeptics to consider that Christianity is more relevant now than ever. As human beings, we cannot live without meaning, satisfaction, freedom, identity, justice, and hope. Christianity provides us with unsurpassed resources to meet these needs. On the Holy Trinity by Wyatt North,St. Augustine Pdf

This classic work, On The Trinity, was translated into several languages and played an important role in the spreading of the ideals of Eastern and Western Christianity. Augustine of Hippo, also known as Augustine, Saint Augustine, St. Austin, St. Augoustinos, Blessed Augustine, or St. Augustine the Blessed, was Bishop of Hippo Regius (present-day Annaba, Algeria). He was a Latin-speaking philosopher and theologian who lived in the Roman Africa Province. His writings were very influential in the development of Western Christianity. According to his contemporary, Jerome, Augustine “established anew the ancient Faith.” In his early years he was heavily influenced by Manichaeism and afterward by the Neo-Platonism of Plotinus. In the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion, he is a saint and pre-eminent Doctor of the Church, and the patron of the Augustinian religious order; his memorial is celebrated 28 August, the day of his death. He is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, the alleviation of sore eyes, and a number of cities and dioceses. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider him to be one of the theological fathers of Reformation due to his teaching on salvation and divine grace. In the Eastern Orthodox Church he is blessed, and his feast day is celebrated on June 15th. Among the Orthodox, he is called “Blessed Augustine”, or “St. Augustine the Blessed.”

Climbing the Holy Mountain of Recovery by Adrian Auler Pdf

This story is about the development of my heroin addiction and my recovery from it. I struggled to escape from addiction for 17 years, but only succeeded after an ibogaine treatment. It is autobiographical, but I only describe traumatic episodes that contributed to addiction and sketch the highlights and milestones in my recovery. It is a memoir, as it offers a thematic view of my life and is moderate in scope; and a personal essay in which I offer insights about societys role in addiction. My intent is that addicts and their loved ones may better understand the nature of addiction so their approaches to treatment are better informed and more compassionate. At 66, I am a gentleman/hipster/Seeker and scholar, but Im not an armchair academic who wrote this book from a library: I was an addict for 22 years! Now I am blessed to be alive and have 18 years clean. My mission is to help addicts by educating the public and the professional community about addictions complexity and the efficacy of ibogaine for its treatment. I hope my story supports a change in social and medical attitudes so that the unheard voices of addicts will be honored, instead of just seeing them as social problems. Addiction put my life into suspended animation when I had a third of the credits I needed for a bachelors degree. 27 years later I returned to school; now I have bachelors degrees in Anthropology and Psychology and a Masters degree in East-West Psychology (EWP). I am currently a PhD. candidate in EWP at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, California.
