You Must Change Your Life: The Story of Rainer Maria Rilke and Auguste Rodin by Rachel Corbett Pdf

Winner of the 2016 Marfield Prize In 1902, Rainer Maria Rilke—then a struggling poet in Germany—went to Paris to research and write a short book about the sculptor Auguste Rodin. The two were almost polar opposites: Rilke in his twenties, delicate and unknown; Rodin in his sixties, carnal and revered. Yet they fell into an instantaneous friendship. Transporting readers to early twentieth-century Paris, Rachel Corbett’s You Must Change Your Life is a vibrant portrait of Rilke and Rodin and their circle, revealing how deeply Rodin’s ideas about art and creativity influenced Rilke’s classic Letters to a Young Poet.

Rodin by Eddy Simon Pdf

This comics biography of one of the greatest sculptors who ever lived is brought to life by a collaboration with the Rodin Museum and includes a preface by its director. It views the artist's story through the eyes of the three women who shared his life, for good or for bad. One was his lifelong on-and-off companion, the other two his muses—one of whom was Camille Claudel, a well-recognized sculptor herself. Rodin's work was revolutionary in conveying exceptional passion, transcending the stone. Here's how that happened.

Rodin by Monique Laurent Pdf

When Auguste Rodin died in 1917, there was an extraordinary outburst of sentiment throughout the world, comparable with the death of great statesmen like de Gaulle or Churchill. He had become a national and an international hero. Born in Paris in 1840, in relatively humble circumstances, he achieved greatness through the exercise, over long life, of a prodigious talent. As an exact contemporary of Claude Monet, he inhabited the world of the Impressionists. But he followed a different path, combining his pursuit of the ideals of classical sculpture with an astonishingly sensuous individualism.

Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ...aged mayor. The names and circumstances of three had been always known, the brothers Jacques and Pierre de Wissant and Jean d'Aire. Recently the names of the remaining two had been recovered from oblivion by a discovery made in the Vatican Library. They were Jean de Fiennes and Andrieux d'Andres. Finding his opinion confirmed by the first sketches he made, he proposed to the committee that he should be allowed to supply the whole group for the same sum, fifteen thousand francs, that had been stipulated for the one statue. The proposal was accepted. His friends blamed him, and considered he was acting foolishly. From a pecuniary point of view, they were right. Such an undertaking at such a price meant loss, not gain, in pocket. But, while not despising money, Rodin has never been able to weigh it in the balance, when a masterpiece has been in the other scale. Enthusiastic at the prospect of so great a work, he visited Calais, explored the ground where the pathetic scene had been enacted, became familiar with Froissart's account of it, and then set about putting the six heroes on their legs, according to the varying notions he had formed of their persons and temperaments, and the parts they had individually played on the occasion. 1 "Bareheaded, unshod, with halters round their necks, and the keys of the town and the castle in their hands." By the month of July 1886, he had his rough model in reduced size ready for examination by the Calais committee; and, one fine morning, the inquisitives of the town were able to see him at the Mairie helping to unpack the case in which it had arrived. The result of the inspection was quite favourable to the sculptor; but some months elapsed before he was officially authorised to proceed with...

Camille Claudel: A Life by Odile Ayral-Clause Pdf

Camille Claudel, sister of writer Paul Claudel, was a gifted nineteenth-century French sculptor who worked with Auguste Rodin, became his lover, and then left him to gain recognition for herself in the art world. With a strong sense of independence and a firm belief in her own considerable talent, Claudel created some extraordinary works of art and challenged the social and artistic limitations imposed upon the women of her time. Eventually, however, she crumbled beneath the combined weight of social reproof, deprivation, and art-world prejudices. Her family, distraught by her unconventional behavior as well as her delusions and paranoia, had her committed to a mental asylum, where she died thirty years later. Camille Claudel’s life has been romanticized in print and on film, but this is the first fully researched biography to present a rounded picture of the life and work of this remarkable woman. The book, also available in French, has been widely praised for its gripping presentation of the life of a woman artist in the nineteenth century, and for its successful attempt to free Claudel from the myths that had been woven around her. “The complete story of Claudel’s tragic life has never been thoroughly researched and recounted until now, and Ayral-Clause’s polished, to-the-point coverage is galvanizing… Fair and precise, Ayral-Clause’s clarion biography arouses the only reasonable response to Claudel’s saga: outrage.” — Booklist “Ayral-Clause commands much new data and an admirable objectivity. Highly recommended.” — Library Journal “… scholars will find this book, with its mastery of the sources in their original language, a welcome substitute for outdated previous studies…” — Publisher’s Weekly “By excavating Claudel from the edifice of victimization, Ayral-Clause frees us to focus on her work and the factors, both Rodin-and non-Rodin-related, that nurtured and hindered her career.” — Los Angeles Times “This is a fascinating biography… Using newly discovered private letters, family photographs and medical documents recently released to the public, the author provides the first serious, authoritative portrait of this brilliantly gifted, misunderstood artist.” — Umbrella “Ayral-Clause… resists dogmatic interpretation, choosing instead to view her protagonists as fully and as sympathetically as the evidence allows… Her straightforward narrative style offers a clear and vivid context for Claudel’s life and work.” — Art and Auction “Camille Claudel: A Life is riveting: measured, even-handed and revelatory. The author shows how we have absorbed the legend (Rodin exploited and deserted her), ignorant of the facts… Odile Ayral-Clause brilliantly illuminates Claudel’s vivacity and recounts her downfall.” — Art Quarterly (England) “The author has redefined the relationship between Camille Claudel, her environment and the art world, and brings to light the originality of the work of Camille Claudel in relation to Rodin’s” — L’Oeil (France)

Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel by J. Adolf Schmoll gen. Eisenwerth Pdf

"The relationship between Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin was one of the most artistically fruitful and passionate turn-of-the-century love affairs. When they first met in 1883, Rodin was forty-four and Claudel a promising sculptor of twenty. Despite the positive response of critics to her early work, Claudel, however, never experienced fame and success. The tragic circumstances of her life - the last thirty years were spent in a psychiatric hospital - have led to considerable speculation and interest in this enigmatic figure. To some she seemed to offer the classic example of a woman artist who was oppressed and abused by a successful man. This book examines Claudel's family background, her relationship to her parents and brother, and her behavior as documented by friends and family to determine to what extent her innate mental instability led to her eventual breakdown. What were the circumstances surrounding her commitment to an asylum and how did her family and Rodin react to her illness? Further, the author critically examines the relationship between the two artists: to what extent did they influence each other? How did Rodin really treat Claudel? Finally and most importantly, Claudel's oeuvre is investigated in terms of her biography and in relationship to her contemporaries in an attempt to evaluate her work as a sculptor and to understand the personal and artistic crisis she underwent after severing her relationship with Rodin."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
