A Short History of the Confederate States of America (Classic Reprint) by Jefferson Davis Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of the Confederate States of America The Vindication of the Southern States for their Ordi nances of Secession in 1861 involves two considerations namely: their rightful power to withdraw from the Union into which they had entered by voluntary compact and the causes that justified the exercise of that: power. In treating this question in its twofold aspect, the legal and the moral, it is not intended to vex the weary ear by adducing time-worn arguments; but, believing the case to be one which must be adjusted finally by historical facts, the candid reader is asked, Without favor or prejudice, to make a decision on the unquestionable record. Otherwise they were as distinct from one another as they were from Canada, Nova Scotia, and the American islands owned by Great Britain. Stories of the Confederacy (Classic Reprint) by U. R. Brooks Pdf

Excerpt from Stories of the Confederacy How can we forget the old bullet-torn flag whose blue cross had been triumphantly borne aloft for years at the cost of so much blood and valor - shall we Confederates who, by the mercy of God, have been spared to this day, not preserve the history that we helped our heroes make - those who have fallen asleep, some on the battlefield and some since the sword has been turned into the ploughshare. We love our reunited country and propose in this volume to tell some facts, for it is history made by Americans, and it is our duty to preserve it for Americans to read. We honor and respect the man of courage, no matter on which side he fought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Confederate States of America, 1861-1865 by John Christopher Schwab Pdf

Excerpt from The Confederate States of America, 1861-1865: A Financial and Industrial History of the South During the Civil War The President at once appointed his Cabinet. Rhett and Barnwell were mentioned as available for the treasury port folio. Barnwell was the President's choice for the position, but he yielded to the wishes Of the South Carolina delegation and appointed C. G. Memminger Secretary Of the Treasury. Mr. Memminger, a German by birth, had been brought up in the family Of Governor Thomas Bennett of South Caro lina, and had studied and practised law in Charleston. For many years a member Of the State legislature, he had inter ested himself particularly in questions Of popular education, and had also given some attention to financial and banking matters. He had displayed no peculiar fitness for the posi tion of organizer and head Of the Confederate finances; and, it must be said, while holding that position, his leadership evoked much hostile criticism and little commendation. His rival in the management of the Federal finances, Salmon P. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The American Civil War by John Formby Pdf

Excerpt from The American Civil War: A Concise History of Its Causes, Progress, and Results The present work was first planned because I found that after a careful study of all the main campaigns, and many of the minor ones, in the American Civil War, during a period of ten years or more, I knew little or nothing of the War as a whole; of the interdependence Of the campaigns, or Of the effects Of contemporary military and political occurrences, which were Often so marked that the campaigns cannot be properly understood without them. Advance and Retreat by John Bell Hood Pdf

Excerpt from Advance and Retreat: Personal Experiences in the United States and Confederate States Armies Infantry. I sailed from New York in November of that year to join my regiment in California, via Panama. On my arrival at San Francisco - at that time a small city built upon sandhills and flats, and distinguished for its foggy atmosphere I, together with one of my classmates, deemed it but proper that officers of the United States Army should go to the hotel in a carriage; but to our astonishment, on hailing a driver, we found the charge to be twenty dollars in gold. This aspect of affairs - our pay being only about sixty dollars a month compelled us to hold consultation with our brother officers and to adopt the only alternative: to proceed on foot to what ever quarters we desired to occupy. Report of the Secretary of War by Confederate States Of America Pdf

Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of War: Confederate States of America, War Department, Richmond, August 12th, 1862 There was, therefore, an interval of disorganization and weakness impending, and the enemy had already entered Virginia with an army, now known to have had more than double the numerical strength of our own and superior to it in everything but courage and a good cause. It was obvious that conscription alone could save us, and it could hardly be supposed that a Constitution adopted in the midst of war, inhibited the only possible mode of raising armies. Influenced by these and other considerations, Congress adopted the measure popularly known as the Conscript Act. Four months have not elapsed since its passage and the present condition of the army and of the country sufficiently prove its wisdom. Four months ago our armies were retiring weak and disorganized before the overwhelm ing force of the enemy, yielding to them the sea-coast, the mines, the manufacturing power, the grain fields, and even entire States of the Confederacy. Now we are advancing with increased numbers, improving organization, renewed courage and the prestige of victory, upon an enemy defeated, disheartened, and sheltering himself behind defensive works and under cover of his gun-boats. A military sys tem which has done so much in so short a time, should be cherished and perfected, and its defects speedily corrected. Life in the Confederate Army by William Watson Pdf

Excerpt from Life in the Confederate Army: Being the Observations and Experiences of an Alien in the South During the American Civil War ON the origin, progress, and issue of the American Civil War there has, no doubt, been much written from various sources, and from different points of view. Assuming those accounts to be strictly correct and impartial, still it must be acknowledged that in general descriptions of events of historical importance the subject is generally taken in the abstract, wholly and collectively, and there is seldom room for any minute analysis of individual senti ment, personal views, or minor incidents, which might be interesting if given in a personal narrative, even though that narrative extended only to a limited portion of the general subject; and more especially if the narrator hap pened. To be an outsider, having little or no direct interest on either side, but became a participant in the events through force of peculiar circumstances. The writer resided for several years immediately pre ceding the war in the capital of one of the Southern States; and, though his occupation and station were more among the industrious, non-slaveholding, and less political class.
