A Short History of the Doctrine of the Atonement (Classic Reprint) by L. W. Grensted Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of the Doctrine of the Atonement This brief history of the doctrine of the Atonement is an attempt to fill a gap in a literature already voluminous. It is the outcome of a series of lectures given to theological students, in the course of which I found the difficulty of referring my pupils to any book which made the sources accessible in a systematic manner. I have tried to meet this need by using quotation as far as possible, and by giving the ipsissima verba of the original Greek or Latin in footnotes throughout. The quotations are usually taken from current translations, but I have sometimes made my own version. There is no pretence at completeness, which would demand a far larger treatise, but it is hoped that no considerable development has been ignored, and that sufficient comment has been introduced to make the history both readable and consecutive. The footnotes will indicate my very many obligations to various books. I have made especial use of Oxenham's The Catholic Doctrine of Atonement Scott Lidgett's The Spiritual Principle of Atonement and G. B. Steven's The Christian Doctrine of Salvation. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIII THE DOCTRINE OF THE ATONEMENT IN MODERN TIMES We have now completed the main part of our task, the characterization of the great historical theories of the Atonement which have from time to time dominated the thought of the Church. Ransom theories. Bargain Jtheories, Satisfaction theories. PenaLthfiories, Rgcjoral theories, all have had their day, and all have added their contribution to the thought of subsequent ages. Only one of the old theories, the Moral theory, with its emphasis upon the manward aspect oT""Atonement, remained to receive a fuller and more adequate expression in recent years. It, too, had a contribution to bring, a contribution which the Church has been slow to accept. The receiving of that contribution is the special mark of the present day. No attempt will be made in this chapter to give a complete account of modern thought upon the doctrine of the Atonement. Writers upon the subject have never been so numerous, or so diverse in their conclusions. We do not as yet stand far enough away from them to estimate them at their true worth. One or two great treatises stand out as landmarks. Certain tendencies can be observed in different quarters. But the complete exposition of those tendencies must be left to the historian of the future. The historian of to-day can only set the present, as he sees it, against the background of the past, hoping thereby to read its meaning the more clearly, but conscious that the broad outlines of the picture may well be obscured by the very wealth of detail.1, " To one tendency of modern theology allusion has 'already been made, * the tendency in Roman, and in Uome Anglican, writers tnjrptaip fop Satiqfnrtinn thawy with a strong emphasis upon the conception of sacrifice as the...

Christus Victor by Gustaf Aulen Pdf

Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.

The Extent of the Atonement by David L. Allen Pdf

The extent of Christ’s atoning work on the cross is one of the most divisive issues in evangelical Christianity. In The Extent of the Atonement: A Historical and Critical Review, David L. Allen makes a biblical, historical, theological, and practical case for a universal atonement. Through a comprehensive historical survey, Allen contends that universal atonement has always been the majority view of Christians, and that even among Calvinist theologians there is a considerable range of views. Marshalling evidence from Scripture and history, and critiquing arguments for a limited atonement, Allen affirms that an unlimited atonement is the best understanding of Christ’s saving work. He concludes by showing that an unlimited atonement provides the best foundation for evangelism, missions, and preaching.

Systematic Theology, Volume 2, Second Edition by James Leo Garrett Jr. Pdf

"Rivals the major systematic theologies of this century." --Baptist History and Heritage Journal, July 1996 "One of the characteristics of Garrett's system that needs especially to be noted is its balanced, judicious, and nearly invariably objective presentation of materials. While holding true to the teachings of his own Baptist faith, Garrett so carefully and judiciously presents alternatives . . . that teachers and students from other confessional and denominational positions will find his work instructive." --Consensus, 1997 "If one is searching for an extensive exposition of the biblical foundations and historical developments of the various loci of systematic theology, there is no more complete presentation in a relatively short work than this . . . Pastors will especially find this feature to be a real help in teaching theology . . . [It is] an indispensable contribution to the task of systematic theology." --Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, September 1999 "Many students and pastors will find all they need here, and will in addition be helped to relate their knowledge to recent developments in the theological world." --The Churchman: A Journal of Anglican Theology, 1991 "A gold mine of helpful material." --The Christian Century, May 29-June 5, 1991 "No book that I know is more loaded with biblical and theological facts than this one. The prodigious research that must have gone into the preparation of this volume is truly mind-boggling." --Faith and Mission, Fall 1991 "Garrett has provided a massive and scholarly systematic theology from a thoroughly conservative and comprehensive viewpoint. The work is well documented in both biblical and historical scholarship and will prove to be a classic." --William Hendrickson, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary "One of the most comprehensive, concise books of its type available; it should receive wide use in the classroom and in the study." --Robert H. Culpepper, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
