A Sporting Murder by Lesley A. Diehl Pdf

It's smooth sailing for Eve Appel and her friend Madeleine, owners of Second to None Consignment Shop in rural Florida's Sabal Bay, land of swamps, cowboys, and lots and lots of 'gators. Eve and her detective boyfriend Alex have joined Madeleine and her new beau David Wilson for a pleasure cruise on his boat. But cloudy, dangerous waters lie ahead. A near fatal encounter with Blake Reed, David's supremely nasty neighbor, is soon followed by a shooting death on the dividing line between David and Blake's land. Both men run sport-hunting reserves, but Blake imports "exotics" from Africa and promotes gator killing, while David stays within the law, pointing clients toward the abundant quail and turkey as well as the wild pigs that ravage the landscape. Nevertheless, when a mutual client is killed, it is David who is arrested and charged with murder. Blake's nastiness is only exceeded by that of his wife, Elvira, who forces Eve and Madeleine out of their shop, intending to replace it with a consignment shop of her own. It seems that bad luck looms over them all, even Eve's brawny and hard-to-resist Miccosukee Indian friend Sammy, whose nephew has disappeared. As the case against David grows stronger and his friends' misfortunes multiply, Eve and her strange and diverse group of friends, including her ex, a mobster, her grandma, and Sammy's extended family, band together to take on the bad guys. But the waters are getting muddier and more troubled, and Eve and Madeleine may end up inundated in every sense of the word. Book 3 in the Eve Appel Mystery series, which began with A Secondhand Murder and continued with Dead in the Water.

Killer Instinct by James M. Buttler Pdf

Crime and sport intertwine in 'Killer Instinct', a book that chronicles the rise and fall of some of the world's leading sporting stars. The 29 men and women included have one thing in common, other than their rise to sport's professional elite, they have all served time in prison for killing another human being. Everyone has heard the name Oscar Pistorius who, in 2013, shot and killed his beautiful model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The South African Paralympic champion is by no means the only sportsman to have swapped the luxurious trappings and adulation of a successful career in sport for the discomfort, disgrace and despair of a jail cell. The sports covered are wide-ranging, the culprits' geography truly global and although all of their acts led to a tragic death, the crimes are vastly different in nature. Most of the offenders took one life, some more and one man was officially classed a serial killer after confessing to seven murders. Whether you enjoy the true crime genre or like sport this book is for you. Like both and it's a must read. 'Killer Instinct' neatly balances the lives of the sporting heroes covered and the deeds that saw them fall from grace. Every death included is an avoidable tragedy, but readers may well be surprised at their different reactions to each chapter. Many of the killers are undeniably nasty pieces of work and deserve all the negative repercussions. For some, despite their acts, you may feel a tinge of sympathy as there are some very sad tales indeed. Of course a few convicted killers profess their innocence. One or two may well have been harshly treated. But then there is the convicted boxer and self professed Nelson Mandela of sport who was as guilty as they come. From another boxer involved in the Melbourne Gangland Killings to the only Test cricketer hung for murder. From the rugby international who shot his wife to the wrestler that killed his family. From the American footballer who killed for a religious cult to the female bodybuilder who snapped and killed. From the pinup skateboarder to the sumo stablemaster, this book brings you up close and personal with the trials and tales of murderous sports stars.

Gender and Genre in Sports Documentaries by Zachary Ingle,David M. Sutera Pdf

Nonfiction films about sports have been around for decades, but the previously neglected subgenre of the documentary has become increasingly popular in the last several years. Despite such recent successes as Senna, Undefeated, and ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, however, few scholarly articles have been published on these works. In Gender and Genre in Sports Documentaries, editors Zachary Ingle and David M. Sutera have assembled essays that examine the various aspects of this art form. Some address questions of gender and sexuality, specifically how masculinity and homosexuality are represented in sports documentaries. Others focus on the characteristics of these films, exploring aspects of aesthetics and narrative. In addition to chapters on basketball, football, baseball, boxing, tennis, and auto racing, this collection features marginalized sports like quad rugby, pro wrestling, live action role playing (LARPing), and bodybuilding. Some of the films described will be familiar to readers, such as Murderball and Bigger Stronger Faster; others are less well-known yet important works worthy of scrutiny. Questions about gender, sexuality, and masculinity remain hot topics in sports discourse and this collection tackles those subjects, making Gender and Genre in Sports Documentaries an intriguing read for scholars, students, and the general public alike.

Sports Law in the Philippines by Ignatius Michael D. Ingles Pdf

Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in the Philippines deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self-regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policy makers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in the Philippines will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law.
