In a few years this enterprise had taken leading rank among the merchandise stores of Rockdale County. Mr. Almand was in active business as a merchant for more than twenty years. In September, 1892, he established the first bank at Conyers, a private institution, established more as a convenience to the customers and friends of Mr. Almand than with a view of profit. The bank continued in a flourishing condition, and in 1901 a state charter was taken out, and it has since been known as the Bank of Rockdale. Under the charter it started with a capital of $25,000, and in 1905 the capital stock was increased from the earnings of the bank to $50,000, besides a good surplus of undivided profits. The first president was John H. Almand. On the 11th of January, 1916, Mr. Almand retired from the banking business, after over twenty-three years spent in its service. Probably of still more importance than this bank has been Mr. Almand's enterprise in connection with the Millstead Manufacturing Company of Conyers. He was one of the organizers and is one of the largest stockholders and a director in this company, which was incorporated in 1908 with a capital stock of $250,000. The capital has since been increased with the rapid growth of the business. The facilities of the company are employed for the manufacture of heavy duck cloth. A splendid modern factory was erected at the outskirts of Conyers, and at the present time its equipment comprises 10,000 spindles and 104 duck looms. The product is heavy duck, in varying widths to six feet or more, and about 1,000 individuals find employment and depend upon this business for their livelihood. The...

Although it generally hewed to national and global patterns, southern electrification charted a distinctive and instructive path and, despite orthodoxies to the contrary, stood at the cutting edge of electrification from the late 1800s onward. Its story speaks to the ways southern experiences with electrification reflected and influenced larger American models of energy development. Inasmuch as the South has something to teach us about the history of American electrification, electrification also reveals things about the South’s past. The electric industry was no mere accessory to the “New South” agenda—the ongoing project of rehabilitating Dixie after the Civil War and Reconstruction. Electricity powered industrialism, consumerism, urban growth, and war. It moved people across town, changed land- and waterscapes, stoked racial conflict, sparked political fights, and lit homes and farms. Electricity underwrote people’s daily lives across a century of southern history. But it was not simply imposed on the South. In fact, one Regenerating Dixie’s central lessons is that people have always mattered in energy history. Renowned New South booster Henry Grady proposed industrialization as a basis of economic recovery for the former Confederacy. Born in 1850 in Athens, Georgia, to a family involved in the city's thriving manufacturing industries, Grady saw firsthand the potential of industrialization for the region. In Transition to an Industrial South, Michael J. Gagnon explores the creation of an industrial network in the antebellum South by focusing on the creation and expansion of cotton textile manufacture in Athens. By 1835, local entrepreneurs had built three cotton factories in Athens, started a bank, and created the Georgia Railroad. Although known best as a college town, Athens became an industrial center for Georgia in the antebellum period and maintained its stature as a factory hub even after competing cities supplanted it in the late nineteenth century. Georgia, too, remained the foremost industrial state in the South until the 1890s. Gagnon reveals the political nature of procuring manufacturing technology and building cotton mills in the South, and demonstrates the generational maturing of industrial laboring, managerial, and business classes well before the advent of the New South era. He also shows how a southern industrial society grew out of a culture of social and educational reform, economic improvements, and business interests in banking and railroading. Using Athens as a case study, Gagnon suggests that the connected networks of family, business, and financial relations provided a framework for southern industry to profit during the Civil War and served as a principal guide to prosperity in the immediate postbellum years.
