Skies of Thunder by Caroline Alexander Pdf

From the New York Times bestselling author, a breathtaking account of combat and survival in one of the most brutally challenging and rarely examined campaigns of World War II In April 1942, the Imperial Japanese Army steamrolled through Burma, capturing the only ground route from India to China. Supplies to this critical zone would now have to come from India by air—meaning across the Himalayas, on the most hazardous air route in the world. SKIES OF THUNDER is a story of an epic human endeavor, in which Allied troops faced the monumental challenge of operating from airfields hacked from the jungle, and took on “the Hump,” the fearsome mountain barrier that defined the air route. They flew fickle, untested aircraft through monsoons and enemy fire, with inaccurate maps and only primitive navigation technology. The result was a litany of both deadly crashes and astonishing feats of survival. The most chaotic of all the war’s arenas, the China-Burma-India theater was further confused by the conflicting political interests of Roosevelt, Churchill and their demanding, nominal ally, Chiang Kai-shek. Caroline Alexander, who wrote the defining books on Shackleton’s Endurance and Bligh's Bounty, is brilliant at probing what it takes to survive extreme circumstances. She has unearthed obscure memoirs and long-ignored records to give us the pilots’ and soldiers’ eye views of flying and combat, as well as honest portraits of commanders like the celebrated “Vinegar Joe” Stillwell and Claire Lee Chennault. She assesses the real contributions of units like the Flying Tigers, Merrill’s Marauders, and the British Chindits, who pioneered new and unconventional forms of warfare. Decisions in this theater exposed the fault-lines between the Allies—America and Britain, Britain and India, and ultimately and most fatefully between America and China, as FDR pressed to help the Chinese nationalists in order to forge a bond with China after the war. A masterpiece of modern war history.

Sons of Thunder by John James Boanerges Pdf

A few years ago, I gave my granddaughter a KJV Bible. On the inside cover, I wrote "In this book are all of the answers to all of life's questions." At one time in our history, nearly every home had a family Bible. In it were kept the records of births, deaths, marriages, and many other events that occurred in the family. If a home today has a Bible, it is most likely to gather dust. To those who attend church, it may or may not be opened up on Sunday. Bible studies have become more social planning events than they have in studying the Word of God. Dark days are upon us. Most people have just enough religion to inoculate them against the real thing. Too many have embraced their vanities and have fallen prey to the ravenous lion. My prayer is that this book will prompt readers to examine more closely both what they believe and why they believe it. It is my hope that the reader will become more educated and encouraged to study God's Word. If this writing encourages but one soul to seek a deeper relationship with Jesus, then all will have been worth every effort. No greater reward can be given to the writer than to know that I had some small role to play in the salvation of a wandering soul. Solomon made us to know that of the making of books, there is no end. The technological era that we live in has us plugged into all sorts of devices. Perhaps we should unplug from the world long enough to discover what really matters.

Assault on Fort Blakeley, The: The Thunder and Lightning of Battle by Mike Bunn Pdf

On the afternoon of April 9, 1865, some sixteen thousand Union troops launched a bold, coordinated assault on the three-mile-long line of earthworks known as Fort Blakeley. The charge was one of the grand spectacles of the Civil War, the climax of a weeks-long campaign that resulted in the capture of Mobile--the last major Southern city to remain in Confederate hands. Historian Mike Bunn takes readers into the chaos of those desperate moments along the waters of the storied Mobile-Tensaw Delta. With a crisp narrative that also serves as a guided tour of Alabama's largest Civil War battlefield, the book pioneers a telling of Blakeley's story through detailed accounts from those who participated in the harrowing siege and assault.

The Beauties by Anton Chekhov Pdf

A beautiful collection of 13 classic Russian short stories by “the greatest short story writer who has ever lived” (Raymond Chandler) Without doubt one of the greatest observers of human nature in all its messy complexity, Chekhov’s short stories are exquisite masterpieces in miniature. His work ranged from the light-hearted comic tales of his early years to some of the most achingly profound stories ever composed, and this variety of tone and temper is collected in this essential new collection. Chekhov wrote stories throughout his writing career, and this selection has been chosen from amongst his life’s work, including many of his greatest works, alongside unfamiliar discoveries, all newly translated. From the masterpiece of minimalism “The Beauties”, to the beloved classic “The Lady with the Little Dog”, and from “Rothschild's Fiddle” to bitterly funny “A Living Chronicle”, the stories collected here are the essential collection of Chekhov’s greatest tales. CONTENTS: The Beauties (1888) The Man in a Box (1898) A Day in the Country (1886) A Blunder (1886) About Love (1898) Grief (1886) The Bet (1889) A Misfortune (1886) Sergeant Prishibeyev (1885) The Lady with the Little Dog (1899) The Huntsman (1885) The Privy Councillor (1886) The Kiss (1887)
