A Thoughtful Life by Ian Weeks,Duncan Reid Pdf

From 1964 till his retirement in 1993 Harry Wardlaw was professor first in systematc theoogy then philosophical theology at Ormond College in Melbourne, Australia. This period saw the incorporation of the then Presbyterian Hall into the ecumenical United Faculty of Theology in 1969 and then in 1977 the union of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregationalist Churches to form the Uniting Church of Australia. Harry was a theological guide to both these unions, as well as a playfully serious mentor to several generations of theological students, Anglican and Roman Catholic as well as Presbyterian and later Uniting Church members. He was noted for a teaching style in which thought became embodied in gesture and any object lying to hand was a potential teaching aid; for his impish sense of humour; and for the intensity of focused attention he gave to any question or idea put to him. The present collection of articles by appreciative friends, former students and colleagues both in Australia and overseas, was presented to Harry on his 77th birthday.

Cultivating a Thoughtful Faith by Dr Maxie D Dunnam,Steven G W Moore Pdf

A passionate call for theological thinking that challenges our intellect, enriches our faith, kindles our heart, and infuses our daily life. The assumption in much of the church is that theology is an obstacle to a vital, growing faith, not an aid to it. In fact, everyone is a theologian--either a good one or a bad one. So what are the advantages of thinking intentionally about matters of theology and how they can guide, inform, and nourish our faith? What are the components of good thinking and what are some ways we can cultivate it? As the contributors to this volume make clear, theology is for everyday and every person, as all are called to be thoughtful followers of Jesus. They make the case for how a living, thoughtful faith and how learning to think about God can launch your faith and make it powerful and alive. This engaging volume will help lay people, incoming college students, and prospective seminarians understand that vital faith is as much about our mind as it is about a warm heart. "Cultivating a Thoughtful Faith challenges the intellect while touching the heart. It advances our understanding of how to love God with all our minds. We in Christian higher education celebrate this contribution to a deeper understanding of our calling." --- Robert C. Andringa, President, Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, Washington, D.C. "Rather than reserving theology for a classroom or Sunday morning discussion, these essays challenge the reader to make sure that theology engages the imagination and the intellect, the heart and the mind. The writers remind us that a thoughtful faith compels us to change the world by transforming our daily lives from the inside out." --- Barbara Oliver Korner, Associate Dean, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. Edited by Maxie Dunnam and Steve Moore (Essays by Paul W. Chilcote, Maxie D. Dunnam, Steve Harper, George G. Hunter III, Steve G. W. Moore, Howard A. Snyder, and Ben Witherington III) Maxie Dunnam is the Chancellor of Asbury Theological Seminary, and formerly served as the fifth President of the Seminary (1994-2004). His many books include The Workbook of Living Prayer, Staying the Course, and the forthcoming Praying the Story. Steve Moore, a well-known leader in Christian higher education and spiritual formation, is the Senior Vice President of Asbury Theological Seminary and the President of the Asbury Foundation for Theological Education. He is the author of College 101: A Guide to Getting the Most Out of College. Paul Chilcote is Professor Historical Theology and Wesleyan Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary. His recent works include Her Own Story and The Wesleyan Tradition. Steve Harper is the Vice President of the Florida campus of Asbury Theological Seminary (Orlando), and teaches spiritual formation and Wesleyan studies. He has written Devotional Life in the Wesleyan Tradition. George Hunter is Distinguished Professor of Communications and Evangelism, and formerly Dean of the E. Stanley Jones School of World Mission and Evangelism at Asbury Theological Seminary. His books include How To Reach Secular People (1992), Church for the Unchurched (1996), The Celtic Way of Evangelism (2000), and Radical Outreach (2003), all from Abingdon Press. Howard Snyder is Professor of the History and Theology of Mission at the E. Stanley Jones School of World Mission and Evangelism at Asbury Theological Seminary. He has written Decoding the Church: Mapping the DNA of Christ's Body. Ben Witherington III is Professor of New Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary. Same-Sex Marriage (Thoughtful Response) by Sean McDowell,John Stonestreet Pdf

Same-sex marriage is here, presenting unique challenges and opportunities. How do those who follow Christ faithfully answer the standard talking points for same-sex marriage? And how can they best articulate the case for one-man, one-woman marriage in everyday conversation? Sean McDowell and John Stonestreet believe a thoughtful approach to God's design for marriage is the answer to both questions. The key is not a contentious attitude towards those who believe in same-sex marriage, but a winsome perspective that is faithful to Christ, committed to truth, and shaped by a love for God and others. Christians need to know that because Christ has risen, there is no such thing as "all hope is lost." They are still called to engage culture even if they are viewed as wrong, illegal and intolerant.

Considering the following quote, “They are never alone who are accompanied by noble thoughts”, the book A Thoughtful Calendar addresses nearly three hundred topics, offering a succinct quote and a corresponding scripture for each day of the year, with consideration of the seasons, holidays, famous birthdays, commemorations, and historical events. The quotes have been gathered from such resources as scripture, talks, classes, personal study, movies and novels over a period of fifty plus years. Some entries have slight editing-primarily to facilitate a consistent format, but the vast majority of entries have added dimension with the inclusion of careful documentation.

Living Wisely and Well in the Evening of Life by Duncan S. Ferguson Pdf

Living Wisely and Well in the Evening of Life addresses the increasing difficulty of those in our culture who are “in the evening of life,” who must manage a rapidly changing society and a new world being born almost daily. There are several dimensions of life which have become especially difficult for those in this position, including loneliness, the sense of being set aside in a changing culture, the cost of medical care, the deep conflicts in our political life, and the increasing sense of not being able to cope. Deep universal values, articulated by the apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthian church, must be claimed and internalized. Paul artfully guides those from this church in a complex setting by suggesting a “more excellent way” in which to live with complexity and challenge. Then and now, we need to cultivate a thoughtful and credible faith in our mature years; second, we must sustain the well-founded hope, rooted in our faith in a loving God, especially necessary in the evening of life. In keeping with the teaching of Jesus, we should make unconditional love the central value in life. It is possible to flourish in the evening of life undergirded by faith, hope, and love.

Cue Cards for Life by Christina Steinorth Pdf

With almost 7 billion people on the planet, we're bound to run into communication problems sometime. And though we know healthy relationships and a sense of community are essential for a healthy, happy, and successful life, some of us are not equipped or quite prepared to deal with the situations and the life transitions we sometimes face. Cue Cards for Life is a handy, intuitive "how to" guide that can be easily applied in real life situations. In her private practice as a psychotherapist, Christina Steinorth noticed that many of her patients came in with the same communication problems. Couples would neglect their love relationships, parents would talk at their teens instead of talking to them, and adults found few guidelines for interacting well with their aging parents. In fact, most people seemed to put more thought into deciding what to have for dinner than they did in choosing what they said and how they behaved in important situations. As a result, something seemed to go wrong -- but they were unsure of exactly what. Steinorth made Cue Cards for her patients to help them with these recurring problems. Cue Cards are deceptively simple reminders and remedies that anyone can use to immediately improve just about any relationship. Each card is accompanied by a clear and encouraging explanation of the psychological principles that make the cue card work. These straightforward tips are so practical and down-to-earth that anyone can use them to communicate effectively with others, minimize conflict, and handle life transitions with greater ease. The book starts with an overview of communication basics, such as the importance of listening and eye contact, boundaries and personal space, and nonverbal communication (body language). Steinorth then offers prompts that highlight what to say and do in a variety of situations. The book includes Cue Cards for improving communication/relationships in the areas of love, parent/teen interaction, caring for aging parents, getting along with in-laws and in the workplace. There are also Cue Cards for weddings, parties and major social events. The book can be read cover to cover or readers can easily flip to sections relevant to their needs. The 47 "Cue Cards" are presented visually as cards, leaving potential for a later card deck. These prompts can also be used daily as an overall commitment to improved relationships in one's life, or to creatively foster more harmonious relationships in a group or between individuals. Each card reminds the reader about some interpersonal basic, such as taking responsibility, earning respect, being honest, asking for help, being kind, being a good role model - even grooming! Cue Cards for Life can help people improve their daily interactions. Most of us underestimate the power common courtesy and kindness have to improve all relationships, and all of us encounter situations in life where we stumble a little. Sometimes we need a gentle reminder -- a cue card, a clue card -- to steer us back in the right direction.
