A Treasury of American Civil War Short Stories by Jeanne W Knoop Pdf
In this book, A TREASURY OF AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SHORT STORIES, author Jeanne W. Knoop recounts her own personal version of an American Civil War Living History Site with narrative paintings encompassing all participating groups of men, women, and children during the war years. Soldiers of both North and South, privates to generals, nurses, civilians caught in the maelstrom of the violently moving whirlpool with little way out. Together with chaplains and surgeons who tried to ease both the souls and physical well being of the men under their care. Teamsters, who traveled by wagons daily on the dirt roads delivering the arts of war along with necessary medicines from ships at the landing to the camps of the hundreds of thousands of troops. And yes . . . the travails of President Abraham Lincoln. Names known and unknown, all did his or her part in the common struggle to prevail towards victory while living during the worst of times in our country since its founding less than one hundred years before. We can all learn from their sacrifices and deaths, what we almost lost. Try never to forget what they did as men and women for us, our children, and grandchildren during those days when our country stood at the crossroads awaiting direction towards the future.

When the Civil War broke out, women answered the call for help. They broke away from their traditional roles and served in many capacities, some of them even going so far as to disguise themselves as men and enlist in the army. Estimates of such women enlistees range from 400 to 700. About 60 women soldiers were known to have been killed or wounded. More than sixty women who fought or who served the Union or Confederacy in other ways are featured. Among them are Sarah Thompson, the Union spy and nurse who brought down the famous raider John Hunt Morgan; Elizabeth Van Lew, the Union spy instrumental in the largest prison break of the war; Sarah Malinda Blalock, who fought for the Confederacy as a soldier and then for the Union as a guerrilla raider; Dr. Mary Walker, a doctor for the Union and the only woman to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for Civil War service; and Jennie Hodgers, the longest serving woman soldier (and the only woman to receive a soldier’s pension).
Friendly Fire in the Civil War by Webb Garrison Pdf
More than 100 true stories of comrade killing comrade: defective ammunition accidental shootings blinding smoke deliberate fire upon comrade mistaken uniforms inexperienced troops unknown passwords On May 2, 1863, Stonewall Jackson was on the verge of the greatest victory of his career. Shortly before 10 P.M. he rode through the woods near Chancellorsville, Virginia, to find where the Federals had established their line. As he returned, his own men, in the noise and confusion, opened fire, woulding Jackson several times. One of the Civil War's first heroes died eight days later. Stonewall Jackson's death is but one example of Confederate killing Confederate or Yankee killing Yankee. No war was as intense and chaotic as the American Civil War. Author Webb Garrison has brought together Jackson's story and 150 other instances of friendly fire in this unique book that strips away the romanticism of the Civil War. "[With] night setting in, it was difficult to distinguish friend from foe. Several of our own command were killed by our own friends." ?Ambrose Wright at Malvern Hill "I thought it better to kill a Union man or two than to lose the effect of my moral suasion." ?Union Officer Louis M. Goldsborough "Whilst in this position my regiment was shelled by our own artillery. The officer in command should be made to pay the penalty for this criminal conduct." ?Confederate Col. Edward Willis, speaking of a battle at Gettysburg "Seemingly not content with the speed that the enemy were slaughtering us, one of our own batteries commenced a heavy and destructive fire on us." ?Union Maj. Thomas S. Tate, speaking of Tupelo, Mississippi
