Catherine of Siena by Thomas McDermott Pdf

Although Catherine of Siena was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, relatively little attention has been given to her mystical thought, particularly in the English-speaking world. The Dialogue, the famous compendium of her mature thought, is difficult to understand owing to its interruptions, repetitions, overlapping arguments, imagery and undefined terms. Thomas McDermott breaks new ground in his systematic presentation of Catherine¿s teachings. Drawing on the Dialogue and also on Catherine¿s 381 letters and prayers, he explains clearly her principal teachings in relation to spiritual development, and identifies Catherine¿s possible sources as well as her areas of originality. By examining Catherine¿s life and mystical experiences, McDermott shows how she herself grew spiritually and how her growth corresponds to her later teaching on the ¿three stairs¿ on the ¿bridge of Christ crucified.¿ Finally, the author puts forward what he regards as the fundamental message of Catherine¿s life and teaching. Students of mysticism and spirituality will find this book a trustworthy guide through the incredibly rich mysticism of one of the 14th century¿s most amazing women.

The Dialogue of Saint Catherine of Siena by St Catherine of Siena Pdf

"Man is placed above all creatures, and not beneath them, and he cannot be satisfied or content except in something greater than himself. Greater than himself there is nothing but Myself, the Eternal God. Therefore I alone can satisfy him, and, because he is deprived of this satisfaction by his guilt, he remains in continual torment and pain. Weeping follows pain, and when he begins to weep, the wind strikes the tree of self-love, which he has made the principle of all his being." These are the words of God the Father from "The Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena," a practical and compelling work of Christian mysticism. The editor has modernized the language in this newly revised and edited edition of this timeless work for the benefit of the contemporary reader. St. Catherine (1347-1380), virgin and Doctor of the Church, dictated the Dialogue during a state of ecstasy while in dialogue with God the Father. In it, the Eternal Father describes, through many different analogies, allegories, and metaphors, the spiritual life of humankind. In his description, God emphasizes, among other things, the importance of cultivating virtue, continually praying, and the need for obedience. Written at a time of spiritual and political upheaval, "The Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena" remains relevant even to the present day, and any reader will profit from the sound advice throughout this extraordinary work. Instructive and profound, the Dialogue is considered one of the greatest works of Christian mysticism of all time. Many people do not know that St Catherine was also a stigmatist, bearing the wounds and suffering the passion of Christ for the salvation of souls. She prayed to God to make the wounds invisible so as not to draw attention to herself. Only her confessor, Blessed Raymond of Capua, knew of her sharing in the sufferings of Our Lord until the day the saint died, when the wounds became visible for all to see. This edition of The Dialogue, originally published in 1907 (but now in more modern English as well as relatively small print, thus only 164 pp), includes an Introduction on the life and times of the saint as well as an account of her death by an eyewitness. Unfortunately Amazon shows a different cover pic and text when you look at the sample pages. But you will get my revised and edited version. Obeying the Truth by Grazia Mangano Ragazzi Pdf

Grazia Mangano Ragazzi offers an in-depth examination of the concept of discretion in the spiritual writings of Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380), who is honored as one of the few female ''Doctors'' of the Catholic Church and who in 2000 was named a co-patroness of Europe by Pope John Paul II. Despite her illiteracy, which necessitated that she dictate to a scribe, Catherine is revered for her writings, which reveal spiritual reflection of remarkable depth. At the same time she is an inspiring example of one who remained active in the political and ecclesiastical life of her time without sacrificing an intense contemplative life. This book investigates the concept of "discretion," to which Catherine dedicates chapters IX to XI of her Dialogue and letter 213. Discretion, Ragazzi argues, is a helpful tool for interpreting the whole edifice of Catherine's spirituality. The term evades precise definition but can be summarized as a form of self-knowledge that leads to an authentic knowledge of God. Ragazzi first examines the role played by scribes in the composition of Catherine's writings, and whether it is possible to consider such writings as authentic representations of her thought, then provides a detailed analysis of Catherine's works to determine the meaning and importance of discretion in her spirituality, and how it relates to the concept of prudence. Ragazzi finds that the clearest influence on Catherine's thought was that of Dominican spirituality: her spiritual director, Raymond of Capua, was a Dominican, as was the majority of those belonging to her circle. But Franciscan mysticism, which was prevalent in religious life during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, also seems to have exerted considerable influence. Ragazzi's meticulous study shows how Catherine's way of being a theologian exemplifies the principle that any person authentically striving to live a Christian life, if gifted with great faith and intellectual ability, can engage in theology in a creative manner without the abstract and specialized speculation reserved for academic theologians.

Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena by St Catherine of Siena Pdf

"The Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena contains four of the 14th-century saint's most famous works. During periods of ecstasy, she dictated these often subtle and always insightful essays to her followers, speaking directly to other devout Christians, addressing their spiritual concerns and pitfalls with a loving, though strict compassion. Believers and students of religion will find this book, as eloquent as it is inspiring, accessible and thought-provoking. Italian affiliate of the Dominican Order CATHERINE OF SIENA (1347 1380) dedicated her life to Christ at an early age, declaring a lifelong commitment to virginity at age seven. She practiced severe mortifications of the flesh, including long periods of fasting where she ate only sacrament wafers. Most of her writings were in the form of letters, over 300 of which have survived. "

Saint Catherine of Siena by Paul Murray Pdf

Catherine of Siena is one of the most intriguing and explosive saints in Church history. A young laywoman with almost no education, she became renowned for her intense mystical experiences, inspired preaching, and scathing criticism of corrupt political and ecclesial authorities. She is even recognized today as a Doctor of the Church--the only layperson to ever receive the title--yet comes across to us more as an apostle than an intellectual. Her work is like Aquinas' Summa set on fire. But for all the fascination with Catherine, the distinguishing feature of her life has received surprisingly little attention: her preoccupation with freedom. Catherine had a keen sense of the "unspeakably crazy" love of God and the liberating power of his mercy. But she also knew the terrible bondage of sin--and the necessity of facing our own inner darkness if we are to overcome it. She had a passion for leading those enslaved by fear and oppression to self-knowledge in God--and ultimately, to true freedom. It is this "fire" that inflames almost every page she writes. In this profound book, the Irish Dominican poet and writer Fr. Paul Murray draws us into the fire of this great mystic's love for God and humanity, reading her life and teaching not only in light of Dominican spirituality, but also the writings of Renaissance philosopher Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and the modern psychologist Carl Jung. What results is a portrait of a preacher of freedom who speaks to us, even today, with compelling authority.
