A Treatise of Delighting in God by John Howe Pdf

John Howe (1630¿1706) was an English Puritan theologian who studied at Christ¿s College, Cambridge, and at Magdalen College, Oxford receiving a B.A. in 1650 and M.A. in 1652. For a time, Howe was a fellow and college chaplain at Oxford. This newly typeset and modernized work, one of Howe¿s most popular which was originally published in 1674, is taken from Psalm 37:4 ¿Delight thyself in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desires of thine Heart.¿ Howe demonstrates the object to be delighted in (God), the access sinful men have to God (through Christ), and how God is to be considered man¿s delight. He shows that the soul must delight in God, and that proper instrument of conformity arises from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then, he gives a number of directions for improving in religion, of motives and principles of a religious life, and directions on having a sole dependence on God. This points the sinner to a holy, consistent practice of delighting in God.This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Not illustrated. 1839 edition. Excerpt: ... When the difference shall be visibly put between those that delighted in God and them that never did, when thou shalt be marked out as one that didst in heart depart from him all thy days, and be thereupon abandoned to the society of that horrid accursed crew, in whom only thou didst delight, --surely, thou wilt not then say, thy transgression was small. CHAPTER IV. Appeal to such as disuse or neglect the holy Practice of delighting in God. We are now to expostulate with another sort; who though they are not altogether unacquainted with this heavenly exercise of delighting in God, yet too much disuse it, and apply not themselves to it with that constancy and intention of soul, which the matter requires. And these we are to put upon the consideration of such evils, as either are included in this neglect, or are allied to it as either causing it, or being caused by it. Those whom we now address, are to bethink themselves, what evil is included in their neglect of this part of holy practice. You are to judge of the evil of it, by its disagreement with those known and usual measures, to which our practice should be suitable, and by which, in reason and justice, it is to be estimated or censured; as, for instance, the divine law, conscience, experience, obligation by kindness, stipulation, relation, profession, tendency of the new nature, dictates of God's Spirit, the course and drift of his design;--with all which it will be found to have very ill accord. How directly opposite is it to the law of God! not only to his express written precept, but to that immutable eternal law which arises from our very natures, when referred to his! The binding force of that law doth not so much consist in this, that the thing to be done is such whereto our..

Treatise on the Love of God by Saint Francis de Sales,Aeterna Press Pdf

THE following Treatise presents, at first sight, considerable difficulties. They do not arise from any defect in the Saint’s mode of expression, but are inherent in his subject and manner of treatment, “going deep down into the roots” of the Love of God. Thus he speaks in his Preface, and continues: “The first four books, and some chapters of the others might doubtless have been omitted without disadvantage to such souls as seek only the practice of holy love. . . . I have been forced to say many things which will appear more obscure than they are. The depths of science are always somewhat hard to sound.” But he tells us that the state of the minds of his age required this deeper treatment; and whatever may be thought as to the best way of presenting modern religious teaching to an age so ignorant, so shallow and so unthinking as is our own with regard to spiritual truths, there can be no question that this masterpiece of the chief doctor of ascetic theology must not be brought down to our level, but that we must raise ourselves towards it.
