Concerning Christian Liberty by Martin Luther Pdf

This is Luther's direct letter and treatise to Pope Leo X on his religious beliefs and a bruising analysis of the Catholic church. Luther strongly objected to making a new law of the forms and urged the retention of other good liturgies. While advocating Christian liberty in liturgical matters, he also spoke out in favor of maintaining and establishing liturgical uniformity among those sharing the same faith in a given area. "Concerning Christian Liberty" is a wonderful piece on Luther's balance between the Catholic Church and his teachings on liberty.

Concerning Christian Liberty by Martin Luther Pdf

This annotated edition of "Concerning Christian Liberty" includes an extra appendix which provides an interesting overview of: Martin Luther's peasant roots, his education in pre-law, and how he was diverted from a law career to that of a monk-turned-professor and eventually, Protestant reformer, The role of the printing press in spreading the "95 Theses" quickly over Europe, catapulting Martin Luther to near-instant prominence in the religious dialogue of his day, The story of how Martin Luther colluded with a fishmonger to smuggle his future wife and her friends away from a convent, and Martin Luther's impact on the Protestant Reformation as well as modern religious thought. Martin Luther's treatise "Concerning Christian Liberty" is one of the most powerful and concise presentations of the Christian life ever written. The power, discernment, brevity and readability of this work make a true gem among Reformation writings (and Christian writings in general). Here you will find the essence of the spirit of the Reformation distilled into a guide for practical, biblical living. With the clarity and bold authority of a prophet, Luther sets forth the whole of the Christian life in two theses: "A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all." We are free from sin and the law (subject to none) but slaves to Christ in love (subject to all). As Paul writes in Romans 6:22, "But now...you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God." Luther writes as a shepherd of the common people and the tone and content differ greatly from his better-known debate-oriented works such as "The Bondage of the Will." The doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone is the heart and soul of Luther's message, founded upon a firm conviction in the authority of Scripture alone.

Concerning Christian Liberty by Martin Luther Pdf

Concerning Christian Liberty sometimes also called "A Treatise on Christian Liberty" or "On the Freedom of a Christian" was the third of Martin Luther's major reforming treatises of 1520. In the treatise, Luther, seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation, develops the concept of Justification by faith. He wrote the Ninety-five Theses against the contemporary practice of the Roman Catholic Church with respect to indulgences. The Theses were quickly reprinted, translated, and distributed throughout Germany and Europe. His theology challenged the authority and office of the Pope. His refusal to renounce all of his writings resulted in his excommunication. The indulgence controversy set off by the Theses was the beginning of the Reformation.Concerning Christian Liberty is followed by The Ninety-five Theses and four letters of Martin Luther addressed to: the Archbishop Albrecht of Mainz, John Staupitz, Professor of Sacred Theology and Pope Leon X.Excerpt: "Hence a right faith in Christ is an incomparable treasure, carrying with it universal salvation and preserving from all evil, as it is said, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned" (Mark XVI. 16). Isaiah, looking to this treasure, predicted, "The consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined (verbum abbreviatum et consummans), in the midst of the land" (Isa. X. 22, 23). As if he said, "Faith, which is the brief and complete fulfilling of the law, will fill those who believe with such righteousness that they will need nothing else for justification." Thus, too, Paul says, "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness" (Rom. X. 10).""45. Christians are to be taught that he who sees a man in need, and passes him by, and gives [his money] for pardons, purchases not the indulgences of the pope, but the indignation of God."
