A Widow's Courage by Bernard Albertson Pdf

In 1864, a beautiful young Indiana woman, her injured son, and a black man leave Indiana and start west in a small farm wagon straight into danger, death, and adventure. This eighty-five-thousand word story plays out in the years just prior to the Civil War. The black character, Zacaria Farley, developed into a strong character immediately. Like so many of the early free black men, this character remained true to himself and was ever willing to go to his death for his freedom of choice and manhood. In writing this book, I found in each instance of danger he seemed to do those things that came naturally to him. In each given situation, this character seemed to grow in strength and almost became the dominant character. The white woman Nancy Weliever, and her son Peter seemed to draw and learn from Zacharia's strength right from the beginning. The main character, Nancy Weliever, was strong from the beginning as well. Her strength and determination to seek out a new life for herself and her son Peter made her to me at least, a complete person. The loss of her husband and the injury of her son strengthened as well as hurt her, yet she was not afraid to be a woman in a man's world.

The Widow's Might by Ann Bennion Brown Pdf

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites . . . Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had.- Mark 12:42 -- 44One of the most devastating trials life can deal is the loss of a spouse. Women around the world are faced with this tragedy, and yet their battle goes largely unnoticed. They often feel alone, forgotten, and abandoned, left to bear the weight of their world without the help of the one they need most. and yet, through time and tribulations, many come to understand that no matter what happens, they will never truly be forsaken. In the Widow's Might, Ann B. Brown recognizes and celebrates the courage displayed by widows as they face the pain of death and loss and find within themselves the strength to overcome.

A Widow's Walk Off-Grid to Self-Reliance by Anne Dodds Pdf

The inspiring, true story of Anne Dodds. When her husband passed away after a long, trying illness, Annie Dodds was forced to sell almost everything to settle his estate. Homeless, with little money, she wondered if it might be time to pursue a decades-old dream of living a quiet, self-sufficient life alone, off-grid. One day, when her son told her he knew of an old house on fifty acres, she knew it was time. Feeling empowered and prepared by having read so much over the years, she loaded her belongings into the back of her pickup truck. But as she pulled into the driveway that first day, she could not imagine the challenges she would face, the obstacles she would overcome, the self-doubts she would master, and the soul-strengthening peace and contentment she would find living in a rundown old home on fifty acres of country heaven. ============================= "March, 2014: Thank you to all who pointed out some embarrassing editing oversights in the book. A World of Widows by Margaret Owen Pdf

A World of Widows provides a global overview of the status for widowhood. Neglected by social policy researches, international human rights activists and the women's movement, the status of the world's widows - legal, social, cultural, and economic - is an urgent issue given the extent and the severity of the discrimination against them. Margaret Own explores the process of becoming a widow; poverty and social security in the context of widowhood; differing laws and customs regarding widow's inheritance; the situation of widows who remarry and issues of sexuality and health. She also looks at the needs of specific groups of widows - refugees, older widows, child widows - and widowhood in the context of AIDS. Throughout, she shows the prevalence of discrimination against widows in inheritance rights, land ownership, custody of children, security of home and shelter, nutrition and health. The book concludes with a summary of widowhood as a human rights issues and an overview of widows themselves organising for change.
