Years of involvement, firsthand experience and research at the Menopause Clinic of the Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, exist as the background to this book. The Clinic itself, however, as one of the first in the world to be established, if not the first, has a story and a lesson of its own to offer, and is therefore deserving of a brief description as the preface to the book. In 1967, shortly after Christiaan Barnard had completed the historical first human heart transplant at the Groote Schuur Hospital, I happened to be in West Berlin and was invited to visit a major international pharmaceutical firm. A new female hormone was mentioned, and thereby started my interest in the subject. Upon my return to Cape Town, I spent many hours in the large medical school library and completely surveyed the menopause literature to 1967. I was stunned by its general inadequacy and was bitten by a challenge to clarify what menopause really was, and to define the proper place of hormone replacement therapy.
Are you a man and have no idea what Menopause is? Or maybe you do but you have no idea how to help a wife, partner, family member or friend as they experience it? Are you going through Menopause and you really need your husband, partner, male family member or colleague to understand what you are going through and how to help you? If you are in any of the categories above then this is the book for you. In the book we will talk through the various impacts of Menopause across life. We will talk through communication, intimacy, our societal response to the menopause, the male andropause and all the different ways you as a man can support those around you. Men and Menopause is a book for the bewildered to understand how they can help anyone going through menopause. Conversations about the menopause are happening more and more across society, but these conversations rarely include the men who are the partners and family of those who are being challenged by what they are going through. This book gives a wide range of information for those men, but also gives them a platform to talk to other men and spread the word. The book is written from the point of view of someone who has gone through the process of supporting their wife through the process of Menopause with all the challenges and the mistakes that came with that experience. Throughout this time Ben was constantly at a loss as to what to do to help the experience of this process. He tried to find information that would help but all he got was the scientific information about what menopause is, not the really important conversations about dealing with change, about being available physically and emotionally to do what was needed, essentially all the information he needed to navigate these challenges in real time. This is the book Ben wishes he had to hand when going through this process. It would have changed his life. Hopefully it will change yours.
