(A)wry Views by David R. Castillo Pdf

The term anamorphosis, from the greek ana (again) and morphe (shape), designates a variety of perspective experiments that can be traced back to the artistic developments of the 1500's and 1600's. Anamorphic devices challenge viewers to experience different forms of perceptual oscillation and uncertainty. Images shift in front of the eyes of puzzled spectators as they move from the center of the representation to the margins, or from one side to the other. (A) Wry Views demonstrates that much of the literature of the Spanish Golden Age is susceptible, and indeed requires, oblique readings (as in anamorphosis).

Latin American Neo-Baroque by Pablo Baler Pdf

Pablo Baler studies the ruptures and continuities linking the de-centered dynamics of the 17thcentury to the logic of instability that permeates 20th century visual and literary production in Latin America. Bringing philosophy, literary interpretation, art criticism, and a poetic approach to the history of ideas, Baler offers a new perspective from which to understand the uncanny phenomenon of baroque distortion. This interdisciplinary inquiry not only leads to a more specific formulation regarding the singularity of the reappropriations of the baroque in Spanish America, but also allows for a more comprehensive assessment of its historical reach in the broader context of the representational crisis of modernity.

View From the Murney Tower by Richard Allen Pdf

Salem Goldworth Bland (1859-1950) was among the most significant religious leaders in Canadian history. A Methodist and, later, United Church minister, Bland's long career and widespread influence made him a leading figure in the popularizing of liberal theology, social reform, and the Social Gospel movement. He was also a man who struggled with the polarities of evangelical faith and worldly culture, and who sought a unifying world-view in the mentoring of Sir J. William Dawson in the sciences, George Monro Grant in public affairs, and John Watson in philosophy. The View from the Murney Tower is a two-volume biography of Salem Bland by Richard Allen, author of The Social Passion: Religion and Reform in Canada, 1914-28. This first volume begins with Bland's upbringing in the home of an educated industrialist turned preacher. It goes on to explore his emergence as a liberating mind and eloquent speaker prepared to support new currents of scientific and social thought, as well as to discuss their implications for Christian faith and life. Allen concludes this first volume with Bland's departure from central Canada for the west in 1903, by which time he had become a somewhat controversial figure amongst conservative evangelicals throughout the country. More than just biography, however, The View from the Murney Tower is also an examination of progressive religion in late-Victorian Canada, a time in which Darwinism and other Biblical, social, and intellectual controversies were profoundly affecting the growth of a young nation.

The Gates of Exquisite View by John Trenhaile Pdf

A new supercomputer spells doom for Taiwan... Amid the explosion of computer technology in the 1990s, nothing comes close to Apogee – a software program able to process human speech in any language, paving the way for pilotless planes, driverless tanks and a global communications network limited only by human imagination. China, soon to resume control of Hong Kong, is now obsessed with an even greater prize in its long march to Pacific supremacy: Taiwan. The outcome is not in doubt, as long as China can secure Apogee – but there’s a problem. The software belongs to Ducannon Young Electronics in Taiwan where Mat Young, son of owner Simon, represents his autocratic father. Simon sees little beyond the limitless profits Apogee will generate, but his less hard-boiled son has become embroiled with a Taiwanese actress whose loyalties are hard to read. All sides will go to any lengths to get inside Mat’s head, convinced that his unique position must give him access to Apogee’s secrets. But Mat knows nothing, and not even the horrors of the torture chamber known to history as the Gates of Exquisite View can change that... A chilling high-stakes technothriller from ‘the heir-apparent to Le Carré’, perfect for fans of Robert Ludlum and Martin Cruz Smith. Praise for The Gates of Exquisite View ‘There is rarely a moment to pause for breath between the agonizingly suspenseful events in a thriller that is worthy of its genre’ Publishers Weekly

Natural Acts: A Sidelong View of Science and Nature by David Quammen Pdf

"David Quammen is simply the best natural essayist working today."--Tim Cahill, author of Lost in My Own Backyard "Lively writing about science and nature depends less on the offering of good answers, I think, than on the offering of good questions," said David Quammen in the original introduction to Natural Acts. For more than two decades, he has stuck to that credo. In this updated version of curiosity leads him from New Mexico to Romania, from the Congo to the Amazon, asking questions about mosquitoes (what are their redeeming merits?), dinosaurs (how did they change the life of a dyslexic Vietnam vet?), and cloning (can it save endangered species?). This revised and expanded edition best-loved "Natural Acts" columns, which first appeared in Outside magazine in the early 1980s, and includes recent pieces such as "Planet of Weeds," an influential new Natural Acts is an eye-opening journey that will please both Quammen fans and newcomers to his work. The Annual Register, Or, A View of the History, Politics, and Literature for the Year ... by Edmund Burke Pdf

After 1815 the usual form became a number of chapters on Britain, paying particular attention to the proceedings of Parliament, followed by chapters covering other countries in turn, no longer limited to Europe. The expansion of the History came at the expense of the sketches, reviews and other essays so that the nineteenth-century publication ceased to have the miscellaneous character of its eighteenth-century forebear, although poems continued to be included until 1862, and a small number of official papers and other important texts continue to be reproduced to this day. Includes a long historical essay on the "History of the Present War" (the Seven Years' War 1756-63). In his preface to the 1758 volume Burke noted the difficulties he had faced in writing the history section of the book. Taking the "broken and unconnected materials" and creating from them "one connected narrative" had been, he commented, "a work of more labour than may at first appear." The 1758 volume is considered a unique, contemporaneous account of the Seven Years' War, analyzing its origins and development with a perspective not readily available at the time in newspapers or magazines.
