The Star of Redemption by Franz Rosenzweig Pdf

The Star of Redemption is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding religion and philosophy in the twentieth century. Fusing philosophy and theology, the book assigns both Judaism and Christianity distinct but equally important roles in the spiritual structure of the world. Franz Rosenzweig finds in both biblical religions approaches to a comprehension of reality. The major themes and motifs of The Star—the birth, life, death, and the immortality of the soul; Eastern philosophies and Jewish mysticism; the relationship between God, world and humanity over time; and revelation as the real biblical miracle of faith and path to redemption—resonate meaningfully.

Judas Iscariot: Damned or Redeemed by Carol A. Hebron Pdf

At the beginning of the 20th century, Judas was characterised in film as the epitome of evil: the villainous Jew. Film-makers cast Judas in this way because this was the Judas that audiences had come to recognize and even expect. But in the following three decades, film-makers - as a result of critical biblical study - were more circumspect about accepting the alleged historicity of the Gospel accounts. Carol A. Hebron examines the figure of Judas across film history to show how the portrayal becomes more nuanced and more significant, even to the point where Judas becomes the protagonist with a role in the film equal in importance to that of Jesus'. Hebron examines how, in these films, we begin to see a rehabilitation of the Judas character and a restoration of Judaism. Hebron reveals two distinct theologies: 'rejection' and 'acceptance'. The Nazi Holocaust and the exposure of the horrors of genocide at the end of World War II influenced how Judaism, Jews, and Judas, were to be portrayed in film. Rehabilitating the Judas character and the Jews was necessary, and film was deemed an appropriate medium in which to begin that process.

Reflections on the Sacrificial Death of Jesus Christ by Jason Tatlock Pdf

The sacrificial nature of Jesus’ crucifixion stands at the core of the Christian faith, and it serves as a focal point for the forty days of Lent. The essential meaning of his death as a victim of sacrifice is widely recognized, but there is more to the sacrificial representation than many realize. Jesus is not, for example, described in the New Testament only as a Passover lamb. That type of lamb sacrifice had nothing to do with addressing sin. His sacrifice involved concepts beyond Passover. Jesus and his early followers drew upon Jewish Scriptures to describe his death in light of several other Israelite practices and traditions, such as Day of Atonement rituals, guilt-sacrifice, and more. In this book, Tatlock draws upon his understanding of ancient sacrifice to explain the complex portrayal of the crucifixion in the New Testament. He shares about his personal challenges and insights in a series of daily reflections for the Lenten season or for any other time of the year.

Coming Out of Egypt by K.C. Stricker Pdf

Coming Out of Egypt is an exodus out of idolatry--the idolatry of ancient Egypt and the idolatry that permeates the church today. Its goal is to make the exodus come alive for the reader--not to just read about the exodus but to experience the exodus, not to just read about the Passover but to experience the Passover, to catapult the reader back through time like a time traveler entering a time portal. The goal of Coming Out of Egypt is to experience redemption, not just to read about redemption, to experience redemption from Pharaoh at the Reed Sea, and witness Yeshua's resurrection.

Talking About God When People Are Afraid by Keith Watkins Pdf

The Dialogues on the Incarnation presented in this book show a group of four preachers as they endeavored to help the people in their church make theological sense at a time when optimism and fear were intermingled. Although the details of life in the early 2020s differ from those in the 1960s when these sermons were delivered, preachers today face a similar challenge—to proclaim a Christian vision that interprets the interior experience of listeners and the dynamics of the outer world where strife, epidemic disease, and global warming dominate the news. These sermons show how preachers can draw upon their own insights and upon biblical scholarship, history, theology, ethics, philosophy, and psychology as they proclaim their gospel message. In the year when Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. and Senator Robert Kennedy were assassinated, these dialogues were described as “an experiment in preaching.” They now are published, nearly sixty years later, to encourage and instruct a new generation of church leaders to continue the pastoral challenge of talking about God when most people are afraid.

Fabian Libertarianism by Martin Cowen Pdf

The goal of this book is to persuade the reader that there is something very wrong in the political world. The cause of the political malfunction is what we shall call Leviathan. Learn why so many societal problems are intractable. For example, how is it that Thomas Edisons great invention, the incandescent lightbulb, is outlawed in America? How is that veterans beloved of Americans are denied treatment by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) unto death? How is it that bad teachers are kept on indefinitely by a school system at full pay in isolated temporary reassignment centers (rubber rooms in New York City)? The heretofore undiscovered answer is: superorganisms having ultimate power over us. Superorganisms exist. They consist of individual human beings. Superorganisms have lives separate from the individual human beings of which they are composed. Superorganisms are epiphenomena of human social groups. Examples of superorganisms include government bureaucracies like the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, unions like the National Education Association, and corporations like General Electric. In this book, the name Leviathan is given to these superorganisms. Leviathan, as we will see, is a deadly enemy. We have a plan to defeat Leviathan, but because Leviathan is virtually immortal, in control of government education, itself a sociopath, and served, in part, by sociopaths, our road is long and difficult. We anticipate a one-hundred-years struggle. There is hope. Read this book to learn the plan. Join our fight. Help restore American freedom for our children and grandchildren.

This meticulous and illuminating work makes a major contribution to our understanding of the era which witnessed an eclipse of Judaism and the birth of Christianity.

Literature Redeemed by Nicolas Dreyer Pdf

In the post-Soviet period, discussions of "postmodernism" in Russian literature have proliferated. Based on close literary analysis of representative works of fiction by three post-Soviet Russian writers – Vladimir Sorokin, Vladimir Tuchkov and Aleksandr Khurgin – this book investigates the usefulness and accuracy of the notion of "postmodernism" in the post-Soviet context. Classic Russian literature, renowned for its pursuit of aesthetic, moral and social values, and the modernism that succeeded it have often been seen as antipodes to postmodernist principles. The author wishes to dispute this polarity and proposes "post-Soviet neo-modernism" as an alternative concept. "Neo-modernism" embodies the notion that post-Soviet writers have redeemed the tendency of earlier literature to seek the meaning of human existence in a transcendent realm, as well as in the treasures of Russia's cultural past.
