Excerpt from Abbreviations and Technical Terms Used in Book Catalogs and in Bibliographies: Book Catalogs and in Bibliographies In the present revision a number of errors which crept into the final proofs, in spite of repeated readings by several com petent collaborators thoroughly familiar with the languages represented, have been corrected. Several librarians and book sellers have given further aid in the revision. Among them special mention is due to Mr. Alfred Hafner and the staff of G. E. Stechert Co., and to Mr. Moth and Miss Plummer of the New York Public Library. Although an honest attempt at accuracy has been made it is not probable that all old errors have been detected or all new ones avoided. It is hoped that such as do remain may not prove misleading, however much they may vex the soul of the fastidious bibliographer.. Excerpt from Technical Terms: Used in Bibliographies and by the Book and Printing Trades The present publication forms part of a more extensive unpublished piece of work undertaken a number of years ago, and will now serve as a supplement to F. K. Walter's "Abbreviations and Technical Terms used in Book Catalogues and Bibliographies," published in Boston in 1912. The original manuscript was planned somewhat differently, and included library terms, now published separately. Changes in the arrangement were made necessary in order to make it uniform with the work it now supplements. Terms already in Mr. Walter's work, are, with a few exceptions, omitted here. In the compilation numerous works on bibliography, printing, and binding have been consulted, as well as periodicals relating to these subjects. Several foreign librarians have given me their kind assistance in cases where I was unable to find the terms. Thus a number of Dutch terms were supplied by Dr. H. Greve and Mr. R. van der Meulen, Italian by Dr. Eugenio Rossi, Spanish by Mrs. Figarola Caneda, and Swedish by Dr. Isak Collijn. Excerpt from Library Cataloguing Some years ago I prepared a Manual of Library Cataloguing, which met with more acceptance than was expected, and has been out of print for some time. Upon considering requests for a new edition, I concluded that a book upon somewhat different lines would be more likely to meet the present requirements of librarians and library assistants - this volume is the result. No pretence is made that the work is exhaustive or complete, but it is hoped that it will serve as a practical and useful introduction to the several codes of cataloguing rules. The statements made in it are not meant to be dogmatic, but they indicate the lines upon which good and accurate work is to be accomplished. As the illustrative examples were chosen from every-day books, and are worked out as simply as possible, they should be found useful by beginners; especially in preparing for the examinations of the Library Association in this subject. I am indebted to my friend Mr. Frank Pacy, City Librarian of Westminster, for reading my proofs and suggesting many improvements, although I am sure he would not care to accept responsibility for all the views expressed or the mode of expressing them.
