Abraham Lincoln and His Books (Classic Reprint) by William E. Barton Pdf

Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and His Books At New Salem, Lincoln read law, and had his introduction to natural history, and to scientific subjects. Herndon relates that he read Rollin's Ancient History and Gibbon's Rome, but that he did not greatly enjoy history. I have several volumes once owned by him, and bearing the firm name of Lincoln and Herndon in his writing, one of them being Ancient and Modern History by J. E. Worcester. Reminiscences About Abraham Lincoln (Classic Reprint) by Ira Haworth Pdf

Excerpt from Reminiscences About Abraham Lincoln In the dawn of the 20th century, looking backward through the vista of time, I recall my first knowledge of Lincoln. Early in the forties, my father, then a resident of the state of Indiana, had correspondence with him pertaining to business of the anti - slavery cause, in which my father was a zealous worker; and previous to this Lincoln had declare-d his opposition to slavery and its extension, basing his opinion on facts experienced in the South where he had been reared. Thus I came to know something of his individual character and sterling qualities of mind and heart prior to meeting him. Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by Abraham Lincoln Pdf

Excerpt from Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 Something more than a decade has elapsed since the preceding words were written, and dur ing that period the assiduity of a multitude of Lincoln collectors has brought to light a large amount of manuscript material which inevitably escaped even such conscientious workers as Nic olay and Hay. The collectors have been so dili gent during this period it is hardly probable that any of Lincoln's writings of importance can be any longer undiscovered. The aim has been to collect this material, add it to the work of the two great biographers, and so make a complete and definitive edition. The Life of Abraham Lincoln (Classic Reprint) by Isaac N. Arnold Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln This work - "The Life of Abraham Lincoln" - was completed only a few days before the death of the distinguished author, the Hon. Isaac N. Arnold. He did not live to oversee its publication. That was entrusted to competent and friendly hands; and the work, with its chapter heads and its full and elaborate index, is herewith presented to an indulgent public. Few had known Mr. Lincoln better than had Mr. Arnold, and no man was more familiar with his life or had studied more profoundly his personal and political character, or his public career. They had been personal friends for a quarter of a century. They were much together in the courts and often associated in the trial of causes, and had been opposing counsel in important litigation. Their long acquaintance and association had made them to know each other well and had engendered mutual respect and mutual regard. From the time that Mr. Arnold entered Congress, at the breaking out of the War of the Rebellion, he became one of the most trusted advisers of Mr. Lincoln, and few men outside of the Cabinet were more frequently consulted by him in important matters. Abraham Lincoln by John G. Nicolay Pdf

Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A History It is not, therefore, with any thought of materially adding to his already accomplished renown that we have written the work which we now offer to our fellow-citizens. But each age owes to its successors the truth in regard to its own annals. The young men who have been born since Sumter was fired on have a right to all their elders know of the important events they came too late to share in. The life and the fame of Lincoln will not have their legitimate effect of instruction and example unless the Circumstances among which he lived and found his opportunities are placed in their true light before the men who never saw him. To write the life of this great American in such a way as to show his relations to the times in which he moved, thbe stupendous Issues he controlled, the remarkable men by whom he was surrounded, has been the purpose which the authors have diligently pursued for many years. We can say nothing of the result of our labor; only those who have been similarly employed can appreciate the sense of inadequate performance with which we regard what we have accomplished. We can only Claim for our work that we have devoted to it sixteen years of almost unremitting assiduity that we have neglected no means in our power to ascertain the truth that we have rejected no authentic facts essential to a candid story that we have had no theory to establish, no personal grudge to gratify, no unavowed objects to subserve. We have aimed to write a sufficiently full and absolutely honest history of a great man and a great time; and although we take it for granted that we have made mistakes, that we have fallen into such errors and inaccuracies as are unavoidable in so large a work, we promise there shall not be found a line in all these chapters dictated by malice or unfairness. Our desire to have this work placed under the eyes of the greatest possible number of readers induced us to accept the generous offer of the century magazine to print it first in these pages. In this way it will receive the intelligent criticism of a million people, con temporaries of the events narrated, and we expect to profit by the suggestions and corrections which such a method of publication invites. Moreover, as we have endeavored to write this history with a purpose of absolute fairness to every party and every section of the country, we ardently desire that, by its wide dissemination, it may contribute to the growth and maintenance throughout all our borders of that spirit of freedom and nationality for which Abraham Lincoln lived and died.
