Abridged History of the United States by Emma Hart Willard Pdf

Excerpt from Abridged History of the United States: Or Republic of America The leading objects of the author of this work, have been to give the events of the history with clearness and accuracy; with such illustrations of time and place addressed to the eye, as shall secure their retention in the memory; and, at the same time, with such an order of arrangement, as will enable the mind to recall, at need, what it thus retains. This we regard as important, not only with respect to this particular study; but as rightly laying out the ground-plan of the intellect, so far as the whole range of history is concerned. We have endeavoured to make the book convenient, - by side notes with dates, - by numbered paragraphs of suitable length for reading classes, - and by questions on each paragraph, placed at the bottom of the page. These questions are so put, that youthful teachers may avail themselves of the author's long experience, to acquire a manner of questioning, which, while it is not obscure, will yet oblige the pupil to think, and which will bring into relief prominent points. We have, indeed, been desirous to cultivate the memory, the intellect, and the taste. But much more anxious have we been to sow the seeds of virtue, by showing the good in such amiable lights, that the youthful heart shall kindle into desires of imitation. And we have been careful to give clear conceptions of those deeds, which are proper to imitate; while, with regard to bad actions, we have, as far as possible, given the result, rather than the detail. Excerpt from History of the United States: Or Republic of America AT 9. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. A History of the United States (Classic Reprint) by Waddy Thompson Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the United States Many years had to follow the close Of the conflict before it was possible for an American to look upon its causes and its results without passion or prejudice. But the coun try has, at length, become united in sentiment as well as in name. The patriotism exhibited in the war with Spain - patriotism that recognized no point Of the compass showed that the last vestige Of sectionalism has passed away. The purpose Of this book is to present the history Of the United States in such a way that the pupils who study it may become proud Of an American heritage. With prejudice eliminated from the account Of the Old sectional controversies, the minds Of the children Of a reunited country may be more readily directed toward the study Of the marvelous progress Of America. With this Object in view, considerable stress has been laid upon the achieve ments Of peace, which, after all, should have the foremost place in history. History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by J. A. Spencer Pdf

Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 IN presenting to the public a new history or the states, the indulgence of the reader is asked to a few preliminary remarks respecting the object had in view in these volumes, and the claims which they have upon the attention of the American people. The one great object ever before me has been to present a truthful, impartial, and readable narrative of the origin, rise, and progress of that mighty Republic which, extending from ocean to ocean, is destined to assume yet higher rank, and to wield larger and larger influence among the family of nations. Having an entire and thorough conviction of the superintending care and control of Divine Providence in our country's affairs; having no ends to gain but those of truth and right having no theories to establish. No partisan views or wishes to gratify I have honestly endeavored to ascertain what the truth is, and then to set it forth as clearly, and as fully, as was possible within the limits to which I was restricted. Mere speculations on historic points, I have avoided; attempts to penetrate or pronounce upon the motives of men and nations, beyond what may be regarded as plainly and fairly deducible from their acts, I have deemed of little value; and, in general, I have preferred to leave the intelligent reader to draw his own con elusion from an impartial presentation of the facts and circumstances of the case. At the same time, in cases of difficulty or doubt, I have carefully and conscientiously sought to compare and sift conflicting accounts, and to arrive at that which seemed to be the nearest approximation to the truth which, probably, under the circumstances, can now be attained. History of the United States of North America (Classic Reprint) by John Frost Pdf

Excerpt from History of the United States of North America In preparing the following history, the author has pursued that course which appeared to him best adapted to unite sound and thorough instruction with entertainment. Beginning with the discovery of the New World, and endeavouring to present the series of events in a clear and connected narrative, rejecting whatever he deemed irrelevant or unimportant, and dwelling chiefly on those striking features ofthe subject which give it vividness and character, he has brought it down to the present day. Although the considerable period embraced, the multitude of characters and events delineated, and the extent of the field in which they figure, have rendered the preservation of historical unity no easy task, he has laboured to give the work such a degree of compactness as woula enable the student to perceive the relation of all it parts, and to grasp the whole without any very difficult exercise of com prehension. History of the State of New York by S. S. Randall Pdf

Excerpt from History of the State of New York: For the Use of Common Schools, Academies, Normal and High Schools, and Other Seminaries of Instruction So far as I am aware, the compilation now presented to the public is the first attempt at providing for our elementary and higher institutions of learning a separate History of the State of New York. Many of the most important events in that history are, it is true, contained in the current school histories of the United States necessarily, however, greatly abridged and condensed. It has seemed to me, and to others interested in the work of popular education, that some attempt should be made to supply this deficiency by presenting within a convenient compass the prominent outlines of those interesting details which have rendered our own Empire State so conspicuous in the history of the great American Republic.
