History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by J. A. Spencer Pdf

Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 IN presenting to the public a new history or the states, the indulgence of the reader is asked to a few preliminary remarks respecting the object had in view in these volumes, and the claims which they have upon the attention of the American people. The one great object ever before me has been to present a truthful, impartial, and readable narrative of the origin, rise, and progress of that mighty Republic which, extending from ocean to ocean, is destined to assume yet higher rank, and to wield larger and larger influence among the family of nations. Having an entire and thorough conviction of the superintending care and control of Divine Providence in our country's affairs; having no ends to gain but those of truth and right having no theories to establish. No partisan views or wishes to gratify I have honestly endeavored to ascertain what the truth is, and then to set it forth as clearly, and as fully, as was possible within the limits to which I was restricted. Mere speculations on historic points, I have avoided; attempts to penetrate or pronounce upon the motives of men and nations, beyond what may be regarded as plainly and fairly deducible from their acts, I have deemed of little value; and, in general, I have preferred to leave the intelligent reader to draw his own con elusion from an impartial presentation of the facts and circumstances of the case. At the same time, in cases of difficulty or doubt, I have carefully and conscientiously sought to compare and sift conflicting accounts, and to arrive at that which seemed to be the nearest approximation to the truth which, probably, under the circumstances, can now be attained. The Medallic History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by J. F. Loubat Pdf

Excerpt from The Medallic History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 Although our political history measures but a hundred years, it records so many memorable deeds, and the names of so many illustrious citizens, that our medals form, even now, an historically valuable collection, to say nothing of the great artistiemerit of some of them. During the War of Independence alone, how many exploits, how many heroes do we find worthy of being thus honoredl How numerous would have been our medals if Congress had not been imbued with the conviction that only the very highest achievements are entitled to such a distinction, and that the value of a reward is enhanced by its rarity! In voting those struck after the War of 1812 with Great Britain, and after that of I846 with Mexico, the same discretion was shown. There was still greater necessity for reserve during the late Civil War, and only two were presented during that painful period: one to Ulysses S. Grant, then a major-general, for Victories, and another to Cornelius Vanderbilt, in acknowledgment of his free gift of the steamship which bore his name. Narrative and Critical History of America, Vol. 1 of 8 (Classic Reprint) by Justin Windsor Pdf

Excerpt from Narrative and Critical History of America, Vol. 1 of 8 It was in 1833 that Colonel Thomas Aspin wall, of Boston, who was for thirty-eight years the American consul at London, printed at Paris a catalogue of his collection of Americana, where seven hundred and seventy-one lots in cluded, beside much that was ordinarily useful, a great number of the rarest of books on Ameri can history. Iiarrisse has called Colonel Aspin wall, not without justice, a bibliophile of great tact and activity. All but the rarest part of his collection was subsequently burned in 1863, when it had passed into the hands of Mr. Sam uel L. M. Barlow,6 of New York. History of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 by Francis L. Hawks Pdf

Excerpt from History of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2: No; II., Or Uncle Philip's Conversations With the Children About New-York I send you now some farther conversations which I have had with the children about the his tory of our own country; and when you print these, I hepe that allthe little boys and girls in America will be as much pleased with them as the young companions of your old uncle seemed to be while we were talking. We have this time been talking about the History of our own state, New York; and I suppose that my young friends were pleased, because we were speaking of many things that occurred upon the very same soil upon which we now walk. At any rate, they seemed happy, and I was contented to amuse and instruct them. I am very glad that they are all so much pleased with the study of history, for it will be a useful pleasure to them. You know, too, that no man is well educated unless he has studied the history of the world, and particularly the his tory of his own country. So I am delighted that the children are all determined, in this particular. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. History of the War of Independence of the United States of America, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by Carlo Botta Pdf

Excerpt from History of the War of Independence of the United States of America, Vol. 1 America, and especially some parts of it, havmg been discovered by the genius and intrepidity of Italians, received, at various times, as into a place of asylum, the men whom political or religious dis turbances had driven from their own countries in Europe. The security which these distant and desert regions presented to their minds, appeared to them preferable even to the endearments of country and of their natal air. Here they exerted themselves with admirable industry and forti tude, according to the custom of those whom the fervor of Opinion agitates and stimulates, in subduing the wild beasts, dispersing or destroying pernicious or importunate animals, repressing or subject ing the barbarous and savage nations that inhabited this New World, draining the marshes, controlling the course of rivers, clearing the forests, furrowing a virgin soil, and committing to its bosom new and unaccustomed seeds; and thus prepared themselves a climate less rude and hostile to human nature, more secure and more commo' dious habitations, more salubrious food, and a part of the conve niences and enjoyments proper to civilized life.
