Passive and Active Structural Vibration Control in Civil Engineering by T.T. Soong,M.C. Costantinou Pdf

Base isolation, passive energy dissipation and active control represent three innovative technologies for protection of structures under environmental loads. Increasingly, they are being applied to the design of new structures or to the retrofit of existing structures against wind, earthquakes and other external loads. This book, with contributions from leading researchers from Japan, Europe, and the United States, presents a balanced view of current research and world-wide development in this exciting and fast expanding field. Basic principles as well as practical design and implementational issues associated with the application of base isolation systems and passive and active control devices to civil engineering structures are carefully addressed. Examples of structural applications are presented and extensively discussed.

Advanced Structural Dynamics and Active Control of Structures by Wodek Gawronski Pdf

Science is for those who learn; poetry for those who know. —Joseph Roux This book is a continuation of my previous book, Dynamics and Control of Structures [44]. The expanded book includes three additional chapters and an additional appendix: Chapter 3, “Special Models”; Chapter 8, “Modal Actuators and Sensors”; and Chapter 9, “System Identification. ” Other chapters have been significantly revised and supplemented with new topics, including discrete-time models of structures, limited-time and -frequency grammians and reduction, almo- balanced modal models, simultaneous placement of sensors and actuators, and structural damage detection. The appendices have also been updated and expanded. Appendix A consists of thirteen new Matlab programs. Appendix B is a new addition and includes eleven Matlab programs that solve examples from each chapter. In Appendix C model data are given. Several books on structural dynamics and control have been published. Meirovitch’s textbook [108] covers methods of structural dynamics (virtual work, d’Alambert’s principle, Hamilton’s principle, Lagrange’s and Hamilton’s equations, and modal analysis of structures) and control (pole placement methods, LQG design, and modal control). Ewins’s book [33] presents methods of modal testing of structures. Natke’s book [111] on structural identification also contains excellent material on structural dynamics. Fuller, Elliot, and Nelson [40] cover problems of structural active control and structural acoustic control.

Active Control of Vibration by Christopher C. Fuller,Sharon Elliott,P. A. Nelson Pdf

This book is a companion text to Active Control of Sound by P.A. Nelson and S.J. Elliott, also published by Academic Press. It summarizes the principles underlying active vibration control and its practical applications by combining material from vibrations, mechanics, signal processing, acoustics, and control theory. The emphasis of the book is on the active control of waves in structures, the active isolation of vibrations, the use of distributed strain actuators and sensors, and the active control of structurally radiated sound. The feedforward control of deterministic disturbances, the active control of structural waves and the active isolation of vibrations are covered in detail, as well as the more conventional work on modal feedback. The principles of the transducers used as actuateors and sensors for such control strategies are also given an in-depth description. The reader will find particularly interesting the two chapters on the active control of sound radiation from structures: active structural acoustic control. The reason for controlling high frequency vibration is often to prevent sound radiation, and the principles and practical application of such techniques are presented here for both plates and cylinders. The volume is written in textbook style and is aimed at students, practicing engineers, and researchers. Combines material from vibrations, signal processing, mechanics, and controls Summarizes new research in the field

Vibration Control of Active Structures by A. Preumont Pdf

My objective in writing this book was to cross the bridge between the structural dynamics and control communities, while providing an overview of the potential of SMART materials for sensing and actuating purposes in active vibration c- trol. I wanted to keep it relatively simple and focused on systems which worked. This resulted in the following: (i) I restricted the text to fundamental concepts and left aside most advanced ones (i.e. robust control) whose usefulness had not yet clearly been established for the application at hand. (ii) I promoted the use of collocated actuator/sensor pairs whose potential, I thought, was strongly underestimated by the control community. (iii) I emphasized control laws with guaranteed stability for active damping (the wide-ranging applications of the IFF are particularly impressive). (iv) I tried to explain why an accurate pred- tion of the transmission zeros (usually called anti-resonances by the structural dynamicists) is so important in evaluating the performance of a control system. (v) I emphasized the fact that the open-loop zeros are more difficult to predict than the poles, and that they could be strongly influenced by the model trun- tion (high frequency dynamics) or by local effects (such as membrane strains in piezoelectric shells), especially for nearly collocated distributed actuator/sensor pairs; this effect alone explains many disappointments in active control systems.

Dynamics and Control of Structures by Wodek K. Gawronski Pdf

This book addresses problems in structural dynamics and control encountered in applications such as robotics, aerospace structures, earthquake-damage prevention, and active noise suppression. The rapid developments of new technologies and computational power have made it possible to formulate and solve engineering problems that seemed unapproachable only a few years ago. This presentation combines concepts from control engineering (such as system norms and controllability) and structural engineering (such as modal properties and models), thereby revealing new structural properties as well as giving new insight into well-known laws. This book will assist engineers in designing control systems and dealing with the complexities of structural dynamics.

Mechanical Vibrations by Tomasz Krysinski,François Malburet Pdf

For all rotational machines, the analysis of dynamic stresses and the resulting vibrations is an important subject. When it comes to helicopters and piston engines, this analysis becomes crucial. From the design of parts working under stress to the reduction of the vibration levels, the success of a project lies mainly in the hands of the dynamicists. The authors have combined their talents and experience to provide a complete presentation on the issues involved. Part one describes, in concrete terms, the main dynamic phenomena and how they can be observed in reality. Part two presents information about the modeling methods required to understand the dynamic phenomena and develop solutions capable of eliminating the most serious effects.

Modeling and Control of Vibration in Mechanical Systems by Chunling Du,Lihua Xie Pdf

From the ox carts and pottery wheels the spacecrafts and disk drives, efficiency and quality has always been dependent on the engineer’s ability to anticipate and control the effects of vibration. And while progress in negating the noise, wear, and inefficiency caused by vibration has been made, more is needed. Modeling and Control of Vibration in Mechanical Systems answers the essential needs of practitioners in systems and control with the most comprehensive resource available on the subject. Written as a reference for those working in high precision systems, this uniquely accessible volume: Differentiates between kinds of vibration and their various characteristics and effects Offers a close-up look at mechanical actuation systems that are achieving remarkably high precision positioning performance Includes techniques for rejecting vibrations of different frequency ranges Covers the theoretical developments and principles of control design with detail elaborate enough that readers will be able to apply the techniques with the help of MATLAB® Details a wealth of practical working examples as well as a number of simulation and experimental results with comprehensive evaluations The modern world’s ever-growing spectra of sophisticated engineering systems such as hard disk drives, aeronautic systems, and manufacturing systems have little tolerance for unanticipated vibration of even the slightest magnitude. Accordingly, vibration control continues to draw intensive focus from top control engineers and modelers. This resource demonstrates the remarkable results of that focus to date, and most importantly gives today’s researchers the technology that they need to build upon into the future. Chunling Du is currently researching modeling and advanced servo control of hard disk drives at the Data Storage Institute in Singapore. Lihua Xie is the Director of the Centre for Intelligent Machines and a professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Responsive Systems for Active Vibration Control by A. Preumont Pdf

Structural vibrations have become the critical factor limiting the performance of many engineering systems, typical amplitudes ranging from meters to a few nanometers. Many acoustic nuisances in transportation systems and residential and office buildings are also related to structural vibrations. The active control of such vibrations involves nine orders of magnitude of vibration amplitude, which exerts a profound influence on the technology. Active vibration control is highly multidisciplinary, involving structural vibration, acoustics, signal processing, materials science, and actuator and sensor technology. Chapters 1-3 of this book provide a state-of-the-art introduction to active vibration control, active sound control, and active vibroacoustic control, respectively. Chapter 4 discusses actuator/sensor placement, Chapter 5 deals with robust control of vibrating structures, Chapter 6 discusses finite element modelling of piezoelectric continua and Chapter 7 addresses the latest trends in piezoelectric multiple-degree-of-freedom actuators/sensors. Chapters 8-12 deal with example applications, including semi-active joints, active isolation and health monitoring. Chapter 13 addresses MEMS technology, while Chapter 14 discusses the design of power amplifiers for piezoelectric actuators.

Vibration Control of Active Structures by André Preumont Pdf

This textbook is an introduction to the dynamics of active structures and to the feedback control of lightly damped flexible structures; the emphasis is placed on basic issues and simple control strategies that work. Now in its fourth edition, more chapters have been added, and comments and feedback from readers have been taken into account, while at the same time the unique premise of bridging the gap between structure and control has remained. Many examples, covering a broad field of applications from bridges to satellites and telescopes, and problems bring the subject to life and take the audience from theory to practice. The book has 19 chapters dealing with some concepts in structural dynamics; electromagnetic and piezoelectric transducers; piezoelectric beam, plate and truss; passive damping with piezoelectric transducers; collocated versus non-collocated control; active damping with collocated systems; vibration isolation; state space approach; analysis and synthesis in the frequency domain; optimal control; controllability and observability; stability; applications; tendon control of cable structures; active control of deformable mirrors for Adaptive Optics and large earth-based and space telescopes; and semi-active control. The book concludes with an exhaustive bibliography and index. This book is intended for structural engineers who want to acquire some background in vibration control, and for control engineers who are dealing with flexible structures. It can be used as a textbook for a graduate course on vibration control or active structures. A solutions manual is available through the publisher to teachers using this book as a textbook.
