State-of-the-Art in Content-Based Image and Video Retrieval by Remco C. Veltkamp,Hans Burkhardt,Hans-Peter Kriegel Pdf

Images and video play a crucial role in visual information systems and multimedia. There is an extraordinary number of applications of such systems in entertainment, business, art, engineering, and science. Such applications often involved large image and video collections, and therefore, searching for images and video in large collections is becoming an important operation. Because of the size of such databases, efficiency is crucial. We strongly believe that image and video retrieval need an integrated approach from fields such as image processing, shape processing, perception, database indexing, visualization, and querying, etc. This book contains a selection of results that was presented at the Dagstuhl Seminar on Content-Based Image and Video Retrieval, in December 1999. The purpose of this seminar was to bring together people from the various fields, in order to promote information exchange and interaction among researchers who are interested in various aspects of accessing the content of image and video data. The book provides an overview of the state of the art in content-based image and video retrieval. The topics covered by the chapters are integrated system aspects, as well as techniques from image processing, computer vision, multimedia, databases, graphics, signal processing, and information theory. The book will be of interest to researchers and professionals in the fields of multimedia, visual information (database) systems, computer vision, and information retrieval.

Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery by Yahiko Kambayashi,Werner Winiwarter,Masatoshi Arikawa Pdf

Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery technology is emerging as a key technology for enterprises that wish to improve their data analysis, decision support activities, and the automatic extraction of knowledge from data. The objective of the Third International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK 2001) was to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss research issues and experience in developing and deploying data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems, applications, and solutions. The conference focused on the logical and physical design of data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems. The scope of the papers covered the most recent and relevant topics in the areas of association rules, mining temporal patterns, data mining techniques, collaborative filtering, Web mining, visualization, matchmaking, evelopment and maintenance of data warehouses, OLAP, and distributed data warehouses. These proceedings contain the technical papers selected for presentation at the conference. We received more than 90 papers from over 20 countries, and the program committee finally selected 34 papers. The conference program included one invited talk: “Knowledge Management in Heterogeneous Data Warehouse Environments” by Professor Larry Kerschberg, George Mason University, USA.

Experience Management by Ralph Bergmann Pdf

This book deals with experience management in the context of real-world applicability and realistic applications. A particular focus is given by the requirements that arise in complex problem solving and by the fact that modern experience management must be implemented as Internet-based applications. Concrete application areas that are discussed in this book are electronic commerce, diagnosis of complex technical equipment, and electronic design reuse. This book explores how experience management can be supported by information technology, especially by techniques that stem from knowledge-based systems, case-based reasoning, machine learning, and process modeling. It surveys different methods in a unified terminology and investigates them with respect to application requirements. Further, the process of application development and maintenance is highlighted, pointing out successful practically proven ways for obtaining and operating experience management applications.

Advances in Database Technology - EDBT 2000 by Carlo Zaniolo,Peter C. Lockemann,Marc H. Scholl,Torsten Grust Pdf

EDBT 2000 is the seventh conference in a series dedicated to the advancement of database technology. This year’s conference special theme, \Connect Millions of Users and Data Sources," underscores the importance of databases for the information age that is dawning with the new millennium. The importance - rives not just from the observation that the information age essentially rests on theconvergenceofcommunications, computing, andstorage.Equallyimportant, many of the concepts and techniques underlying the success of databasesystems have independent meaning and impact for today’s distributed information s- tems. The papers in the volume should also be seen in this light. The EDBT 2000 conference program includes 30 research papers selected by the program committee out of 187 submissions, covering advances in research, development, and applications of databases. The conference program also - cludes six industry andapplications papers,a panel discussion, six tutorials, and several software demonstrations. The conference features three distinguished - vited speakers: Ashish Gupta discusses database issues in electronic commerce, Stefano Ceri addresses the impact and challenges of XML on databases, and Andreas Reuter shares his views on new perspectives on database technology. The technical contributions presented at the EDBT 2000 conference are colle- ed and preserved in this volume that we are pleased to present to you with the expectation that it will serve as a valuable research and reference tool in your professional life.

Advanced Database Indexing by Yannis Manolopoulos,Yannis Theodoridis,Vassilis Tsotras Pdf

Advanced Database Indexing begins by introducing basic material on storage media, including magnetic disks, RAID systems and tertiary storage such as optical disk and tapes. Typical access methods (e.g. B+ trees, dynamic hash files and secondary key retrieval) are also introduced. The remainder of the book discusses recent advances in indexing and access methods for particular database applications. More specifically, issues such as external sorting, file structures for intervals, temporal access methods, spatial and spatio-temporal indexing, image and multimedia indexing, perfect external hashing methods, parallel access methods, concurrency issues in indexing and parallel external sorting are presented for the first time in a single book. Advanced Database Indexing is an excellent reference for database professionals and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

Database and Expert Systems Applications by Heinrich C. Mayr,Jiri Lazansky,Gerald Quirchmayr,Pavel Vogel Pdf

th DEXA 2001, the 12 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications was held on September 3–5, 2001, at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. The rapidly growing spectrum of database applications has led to the establishment of more specialized discussion platforms (DaWaK conference, EC Web conference, and DEXA workshop), which were all held in parallel with the DEXA conference in Munich. In your hands are the results of much effort, beginning with the preparation of the submitted papers. The papers then passed through the reviewing process, and the accepted papers were revised to final versions by their authors and arranged with the conference program. All this culminated in the conference itself. A total of 175 papers were submitted to this conference, and I would like to thank all the authors. They are the real base of the conference. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether 497 referee reports, on average of 2.84 reports per paper, and selected 93 papers for presentation. Comparing the weight or more precisely the number of papers devoted to particular topics at several recent DEXA conferences, an increase can be recognized in the areas of XMS databases, active databases, and multi and hypermedia efforts. The space devoted to the more classical topics such as information retrieval, distribution and Web aspects, and transaction, indexing and query aspects has remained more or less unchanged. Some decrease is visible for object orientation.
