Addiction, Attachment, Trauma and Recovery: The Power of Connection (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology) by Oliver J. Morgan Pdf

A new model of addiction that incorporates neurobiology, social relationships, and ecological systems. Understanding addiction is no longer just about understanding neurons or genes, broken brain functioning, learning, or faulty choices. Oliver J. Morgan provides a fresh take on addiction and recovery by presenting a more inclusive framework than traditional understanding. Cutting- edge work in attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, and trauma is integrated with ecological- systems thinking to provide a consilient and comprehensive picture of addiction. Humans are born into connection and require nourishing relationships for healthy living. Adversities, however, bring fragmentation and create the conditions for ill health. They create vulnerabilities. In order to cope, individuals can turn to alternatives, “substitute relationships” that ease the pain of disconnection. These can become addictions. Addiction, Attachment, Trauma, and Recovery presents a model, a method, and a mandate. This new focus calls for change in the established ways we think and behave about addiction and recovery. It reorients understanding and clinical practice for mental health and addiction counselors, psychologists, and social workers, as well as for addicts and those who love them.

Creating the Capacity for Attachment by Karen B. Walant Pdf

Detached, alienated people, many of them functioning with a pathologically developed false self, barely navigate life's challenges. Our cultural emphasis on autonomy and separateness has led to a retreat from valuing interpersonal, communal dependence and has greatly contributed to a rise in the number of people whose suffering is often expressed in addictions and personality disorders. Using actual patient material including diaries and letters, Karen Walant's Creating the Capacity for Attachment shows how "immersive moments" in therapy—moments of complete understanding between patient and therapist—are powerful enough to dislodge the alienated, detached self from its hiding place and enable the individual to begin incorporating his or her inner core into his or her external, social self.

Addiction and Grace by Gerald G. May Pdf

Addiction and Grace offers an inspiring and hope–filled vision for those who desire to explore the mystery of who and what they really are. May examines the "processes of attachment" that lead to addiction and describes the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. He also details the various addictions from which we can suffer, not only to substances like alcohol and drugs, but to work, sex, performance, responsibility, and intimacy. Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist working with the chemically dependent, May emphasizes that addiction represents an attempt to assert complete control over our lives. Addiction and Grace is a compassionate and wise treatment of a topic of major concern in these most addictive of times, one that can provide a critical yet hopeful guide to a place of freedom based on contemplative spirituality.

The Psychology of the Car by Stefan Gossling Pdf

The Psychology of the Car explores automotive cultures through the lens of psychology with the goal of achieving a low-carbon transport future. Worldwide there are now more than one billion cars, and their number grows continuously. Yet there is growing evidence that humanity needs to reach ‘peak cars’ as increased air pollution, noise, accidents, and climate change support a decline in car usage. While many governments agree, the car remains attractive, and endeavors to change transport systems have faced fierce resistance. Based on insights from a wide range of transport behaviors, The Psychology of the Car shows the “why of automotive cultures, providing new perspectives essential for understanding its attractiveness and for defining a more desirable transport future. The Psychology of the Car illustrates the growth of global car use over time and its effect on urban transport systems and the global environment. It looks at the adoption of the car into lifestyles, the “mobilities turn, and how the car impacts collective and personal identities. The book examines car drivers themselves; their personalities, preferences, and personality disorders relevant to driving. The book looks at the role power, control, dominance, speed, and gender play, as well as the interrelationship between personal freedom and law enforcement. The book explores risk-taking behaviors as accidental death is a central element of car driving. The book addresses how interventions can be successful as well as which interventions are unlikely to work, and concludes with how a more sustainable transport future can be created based on emerging transport trends. Features deep analyses of individual and collective psychologies of car affection, moving beyond sociology-based interpretations of automobile culture Illustrates concepts using popular culture examples that expose ideas about automobility Shows how fewer, smaller and more environmentally friendly cars, as well as low-carbon transport modes, are more socially attractive

Mother Hunger by Kelly McDaniel Pdf

An insatiable need for sex and love. Periods of overeating or starving. A pattern of unstable and painful relationships. Does this sound painfully familiar? Trauma counselor Kelly McDaniel has seen these traits over and over in clients who feel trapped in cycles of harmful behaviors-and are unable to stop. Many of us find ourselves stuck in unhealthy habits simply because we don't see a better way. With Mother Hunger, McDaniel helps women break the cycle of destructive behavior by taking a fresh look at childhood trauma and its lasting impact. In doing so, she destigmatizes the shame that comes with being under-mothered and misdiagnosed. McDaniel offers a healing path with powerful tools that include therapeutic interventions and lifestyle changes in service to healthy relationships. The constant search for mother love can be a lifelong emotional burden, but healing begins with knowing and naming what we are missing. McDaniel is the first clinician to identify Mother Hunger, which demystifies the search for love and provides the compass that each woman needs to end the struggle with achy, lonely emptiness, and come home to herself.

Our Imprisonments by C. S. Bairagi Pdf

Liberation is your birthright and anything that feels like a prison, like a confinement, needs your attention. Spiritualism is not very difficult to explain or understand. It is simply, freeing your spirit of all imprisonments. It is becoming aware of these sophisticated bars and then working your way out of them. It is being able to see the chains that are tied around the feet of your being and are making it tough for you to walk around. We have been living in these invisible jails for so long that they have become our homes. The world beyond our assumed limitations is unknown to us. Every now and then someone manages to jump across the high walls of the conditioning of the mind and enter the realm of enlightenment. But, the rest of us live and die within the four walls of mass consciousness. To a bird in a cage the greatest gift you can give, as an expression of love and compassion, is to open the gates and let it fly back to the open and vast sky. That is exactly what I have tried to do. I have tried to assist the bird of your spirit to fly out of the cage of spiritual enslavement. Watching that bird happily disappear into the vastness would be my joy. I love liberating and I love liberators. I write to liberate others and I liberate myself to be able to write about it. The freedom we have earned as nations is no doubt a great blessing. But it is only an environment. Authentic freedom has to come from within and only after having earned it can you call yourself a free man in a free country. I have witnessed my near and dear ones go through great pain and suffering because of the control exercised by invisible forces like lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego over their spirit. I have myself gone through an unbearable amount of it and would wish to eliminate as much of it as I can. It is quite tough to watch someone close to you consulting half a dozen doctors, spending thousands on clinical examinations and experimenting with 50 different medicines, never knowing that the real sickness is his or her ego. It is as if you were cursed to watch the whole drama helplessly. It is as if you know what someone is suffering from, have got the cure for it but can't give it because the one who is supposed to take it is not yet prepared to take it. It is a perfect situation for compassion to be born, a strange blending of helplessness, acceptance and understanding. The more I watch all this, the more I ponder into the potential of the various methods that can liberate a soul from its traps.
