Adrian Ghenie by Juerg Judin Pdf

At least since his spectacular exhibition in the Romanian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, Adrian Ghenie (*1977 in Baia Mare, Romania) has been known to the broad public as one of the most interesting and unconventional painters of his generation. His works--painted in oils that have been scratched, applied with a palette knife, or thrown onto the canvas--have already gained entry into the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and have achieved one auction record after another in the art market. Yet neither Ghenie's subjects nor his technique cater to the taste of the public: the history of the 'century of humiliation' --which is how Ghenie refers to the twentieth century--its perpetrators and victims are the most important sources for his collage-like compositions. These subjects are joined by his positive heroes alike, such as Van Gogh and Darwin, and time after time, his self portrait

These subjects are juxtaposed with heroes such as Van Gogh and Darwin, as well as depictions of himself.

Philip Guston by Robert Storr Pdf

An authoritative and comprehensive survey of the life and work of the visionary and influential painter Philip Guston. Driven and consumed by art, Philip Guston painted and drew compulsively. This book takes the reader from his early social realist murals and easel paintings of the 1930s and 1940s, to the Abstract Expressionist works of the 1950s and early 1960s, and finally to the powerful new language of figurative painting, which he developed in the late 1960s and 1970s. Drawing on more than thirty years of his own research, the critic and curator, Robert Storr, maps Guston's entire career in one definitive volume, providing a subtantial, accessible, and revealing analysis of his work. With more than 800 images, the book illustrates Guston's key works and includes many unpublished paintings and drawings. An extensive chronology, illustrated with photographs, letters, articles, publications, and other ephemera drawn from the artist's archives and other sources, contextualizes Guston's life and provides in-depth coverage of his life at home, his work in the studio, his relationship with fellow artists and his many exhibitions. Guston was able to speak about art with unrivalled passion and fluency. In celebration of this, the book features Guston's own thoughts on his drawings and his great heroes of the Italian Renaissance.

Adrian Ghenie: The Hooligans by Adrian Ghenie Pdf

"Ghenie's meditation on the idea of hooliganism, examining the role of rebellion in the artistic process, is applied here towards an excavation of art history and European history." -Art Observed This book documents a selection of works by artist Adrian Ghenie (born 1977) included in his exhibition The Hooligans. The artist's newest body of work, these nine paintings and three drawings continue Ghenie's exploration of abstracting figures, layering shapes and gestural painting techniques to create complex images intertwined with art historical narratives. Influenced by Impressionist painters, as well as Turner, Van Gogh and Gauguin, this new body of work documents Ghenie's exploration of abstracting figures, layering shapes and using gestural painting techniques to create complex images intertwined with art historical narratives. Ghenie's meditation on the idea of "hooliganism" examines the role of rebellion in an artist's process, working to reject or ignore traditionalism to create the new. An art historical text by Apsara DiQuinzio traces the trajectory of Ghenie's practice through to today. In her new text, Masha Tupitsyn discusses the concept of the double, looking at its history in philosophy, literature, film and art.

The Passive Vampire by Ghérasim Luca Pdf

Originally published in 1945 by Les ditions de l'Oubli in Bucharest, The Passive Vampire caught the attention of the French Surrealists when an excerpt appeared in 1947 in the magazine La part du sable. Luca, whose work was admired by Gilles Deleuze, attempts here to transmit the "shudder" evoked by some Surrealist texts, such as Andr Breton's Nadja and Mad Love, probing with acerbic humor the fragile boundary between "objective chance" and delirium. Impossible to define, The Passive Vampire is a mixture of theoretical treatise and breathless poetic prose, personal confession and scientific investigation it is 18 photographs of "objectively offered objects," a category created by Luca to occupy the space opened up by Breton. At times taking shape as assemblages, these objects are meant to capture chance in its dynamic and dramatic forms by externalizing the ambivalence of our drives and bringing to light the nearly continual equivalence between our love-hate tendencies and the world of things.

Emilio Vedova: A Historical Survey by Emilio Vedova Pdf

The work of Emilio Vedova, born in Venice in 1919, has always fused political critique and artistic engagement. From his early days as a participant in the Resistance of the 1940s and a signer of the manifesto "Oltre Guernica, "Vedova has never stopped working, protesting and challenging himself. He began with his own artistic education: he is essentially self-taught, and has not shied away from continuing to experiment with new techniques and formats. Best known for painting--for which he was awarded the Venice Biennale's Grand Prize in 1960--he has also designed costumes and moving light sets for the opera and made large-scale glass engravings and light collages. "Emilio Vedova" documents a selection of his work from the 1950s to today.

Shadow of a Daydream by Adrian Ghenie,Martin Coomer,Juerg M. Judin Pdf

Shadow of a Daydream is a series of powerful new paintings inspired by the artist's recent residency in Berlin. The works demonstrate Ghenie's fascination for history and the trauma of dictatorship; they also reveal his current preoccupation with the Jungian notion of the 'collective unconscious'. Ghenie has dramatically increased the scale of his paintings for this show in order to develop and sustain an array of complex compositions peopled with unexpected ensembles of figures, statues, boxes and buildings. Strangely, the eclectic and often bizarre groupings are completely convincing in their present contexts, connected as they are by what Ghenie describes as the 'surrealistic exercise' of daydreaming. There is a strongly progressive narrative that runs through Ghenie's exhibition; the sources for his images are derived from a combination of his own personal store of memories and from historical books, archives and film - both documentary and fictional. The weaving together of personal histories with collective memories makes for a psychologically disturbing encounter on the part of the viewer, who may experience a sense of unease or an uncanny jolt of recognition as they survey the paintings. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Adrian Ghenie: Shadow of a Daydream at Haunch of Venison, Zurich, November 2007 - January 2008.

Francis Bacon by Peyré Yves Pdf

- A thoroughly illustrated monograph of Francis Bacon by a personal friend of the artist- An exceptional collection of Bacon imagery, reproduced to the highest quality- Approximately 160 images, including major works such as Three Studies for a Crucifixion, assembled in a beautifully designed book- Biographical information presented alongside in-depth art analysisAn intimate insight into the life and work of Francis Bacon, written by Yves Peyré, a close friend of the artist. This comprehensive monograph details Bacon's artistic journey, from his early design work in the 1920s to his disturbing, emotive triptychs of the 1980s. Tormented, twisted, and jarringly dissonant, Bacon's divided vision of the world swung between civilization and barbarism, beauty and ugliness, life and death. His study of classical culture and western mythology led him to depict darkly sublime worlds of violence and madness that intrigue as much as they evoke visceral disgust. This monograph begins with a biography, relating the life of Francis Bacon, his stories and inspirations; before delving into a sharp analysis of his work. Peyré's personal connection with Bacon makes Francis Bacon a detailed and touching story, inviting the reader on a philosophical, poetic and artistic stroll through the artist's mind.
