The adventures of Kimble Bent by James Cowan Pdf

The last quarter-century of Kimble Bent's life has not carried much adventure. Living amongst the Maoris, he acquired some reputation as a “medicine-man.” During his wild life in Maoridom he had become expert in the rude pharmacopœia of the bush, and learned to extract potent medicines from the plants of the forest. Native herbs and tree-bark and leaves, prepared in various ways, are exceedingly valuable remedies. The knowledge of these herbal remedies, gained from many a tohunga and wise woman of the bush tribes, the white man now turned to practical account. His fame as a doctor reached Parihaka, the village of Te Whiti, the Prophet of the Mountain. The prophet's people sent for the white medicine-man to come and heal the sick. He spent a week in Parihaka, and returned to his Taiporohenui hut with more money in his pocket than he had possessed since he left his old home-town of Eastport to see life in England. “And I was luckier than most pakeha doctors,” says the old man, “for none of my patients died!”...FROM THE BOOKS.

The adventures of Kimble Bent by James Cowan Pdf

'The Adventures of Kimble Bent' is a historical account of Kimble Bent, a British Army soldier who lived with the New Zealand Maori people. Having deserted his Regiment in 1865, Kimble evaded his fellow British troops and Colonial irregulars who are hunting him for the reward on his head. He spent the next thirteen years on the run from his fellow whites and went to live with the Maori people who were under the famed Chief Titokowaru. Bent became fully integrated into Maori society and even took part in the famed Titokowaru's war. When at last he came out of his exile, he had almost forgotten how to speak in English. But this doesn't mean that he doesn't have a tale to tell. The book captures a series of interviews that the author James Cowan had with Kimble over a period of seven years since 1903. The author also incorporates other independent accounts of events at the time and gives a rich historical picture of the Maori people and their culture.

Excerpt from The Adventures of Kimble Bent: A Story of Wild Life in the New Zealand Bush This book is not a work of fiction. It is a plain narrative of real life in the New Zealand bush, a true story of adventure in a day not yet remote, when adventure in abundance was still to be had in the land of the Maori. Every name used is a real one, every character who appears in these pages had existence in those war days of forty years ago. Every incident described here is a faithful record of actual happenings; some of them may convince the reader that truth can be stranger than fiction. Cursed Britain by Thomas Waters Pdf

The definitive history of how witchcraft and black magic have survived, through the modern era and into the present day Cursed Britain unveils the enduring power of witchcraft, curses and black magic in modern times. Few topics are so secretive or controversial. Yet, whether in the 1800s or the early 2000s, when disasters struck or personal misfortunes mounted, many Britons found themselves believing in things they had previously dismissed - dark supernatural forces. Historian Thomas Waters here explores the lives of cursed or bewitched people, along with the witches and witch-busters who helped and harmed them. Waters takes us on a fascinating journey from Scottish islands to the folklore-rich West Country, from the immense territories of the British Empire to metropolitan London. We learn why magic caters to deep-seated human needs but see how it can also be abused, and discover how witchcraft survives by evolving and changing. Along the way, we examine an array of remarkable beliefs and rituals, from traditional folk magic to diverse spiritualities originating in Africa and Asia. This is a tale of cynical quacks and sincere magical healers, depressed people and furious vigilantes, innocent victims and rogues who claimed to possess evil abilities. Their spellbinding stories raise important questions about the state's role in regulating radical spiritualities, the fragility of secularism and the true nature of magic.

Racial Crossings by Damon Ieremia Salesa Pdf

The Victorians were fascinated with intersections between different races. Whether in sexual or domestic partnerships, in interracial children, racially diverse communities or societies, these 'racial crossings' were a lasting Victorian concern. But in an era of imperial expansion, when slavery was abolished, colonial wars were fought, and Britain itself was reformed, these concerns were more than academic. In both the British empire and imperial Britain, racial crossings shaped what people thought about race, the future, the past, and the conduct and possibilities of empire. Victorian fears of miscegenation and degeneration are well known; this study turns to apparently opposite ideas where racial crossing was seen as a means of improvement, a way of creating new societies, or a mode for furthering the rule of law and the kingdom of Heaven. Salesa explores how and why the preoccupation with racial crossings came to be so important, so varied, and so widely shared through the writings and experiences of a raft of participants: from Victorian politicians and writers, to philanthropists and scientists, to those at the razor's edge of empire - from soldiers, missionaries, and settlers, to 'natives', 'half-castes' and other colonized people. Anchored in the striking history of colonial New Zealand, where the colonial policy of 'racial amalgamation' sought to incorporate and intermarry settlers and New Zealand Maori, Racial Crossings examines colonial encounters, working closely with indigenous ideas and experiences, to put Victorian racial practice and thought into sharp, critical, relief.

Gothic Images of Race in Nineteenth-Century England by Howard L. Malchow Pdf

In pursuing the sources for late-eighteenth and nineteenth-century “demonization” of racial and cultural difference, this book moves back and forth between the imagined world of literature and the “real” world of historical experience, between fictional romance and what has been called the “parallel fictions” of the human sciences of anthropology and biology. The author argues that the gothic genre and its various permutations offered a language that could be appropriated, consciously or not, by racists in a powerful and obsessively reiterated evocation of terror, disgust, and alienation. But he shows that the gothic itself also evolved in the context of the brutal progress of European nationalism and imperialism, and absorbed much from them. This book explores both the gothicization of race and the racialization of the gothic as inseparable processes.

'Hauhau' by Paul Clark Pdf

To most New Zealanders, the word 'Hauhau' conjures up a picture of bloodthirsty fanaticism. This book, the definitive study of the Pai Marire or 'Hauhau' M&āori movement in the 1860s, presents a different view. Pai Marire is shown as being a search for ways of meeting European settlement and domination, and of using European skills and literacy, on M&āori terms and without compromising M&āori identity. Sources include the Ua Rongopai notebook, which contains a record of the words of Te Ua Haum&ēne, the prophet of Pai Marire, himself.
