Advance Thought (Classic Reprint) by Chas. E. Glass Pdf

Excerpt from Advance Thought IN presenting this work it may be mentioned that it was originally commenced, simply as an effort of indi vidual mind to explore the truth for itself, without any intention of bookmaking, and the printing of it was an afterthought. The writer did not believe that any peculiar gift, denied to others, was possessed by those through whom we have received inspired Scripture, as he held that inspiration, if admitted at all, must be re garded as the common inheritance of mankind; and that, as a necessity of increased enlightenment, it must even grow more generally open than it has 5 yet been. It is written they shall be all taught of Perplexed between the unsatisfying dogmas of sec tarianism, based chiefly upon the letter that killeth. The Advance of Science in the Last Half-Century (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Henry Huxley Pdf

Excerpt from The Advance of Science in the Last Half-Century Standstill by the decay and disruption of the Roman Empire, the consequent dis organisation of society, and the diversion of men's thoughts from sublunary matters to the problems of the supernatural world suggested by Christian dogma in the Mid dle Ages. And, notwithstanding sporadic attempts to recall men to the investiga tion of nature, here and there, it was not until the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that physical science made a new start. Founding itself, at first, altogether upon that which had been done by the Greeks. Indeed, it must be admitted that the men of the Renaissance, though standing on the shoulders of the old philosophers, were a long time before they saw as much as their forerunners had done. Evolution and the Need of Atonement (Classic Reprint) by Stewart Andrew McDowall Pdf

Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. The Delight Makers by Catherine L. Albanese Pdf

An ambitious history of desire in Anglo-American religion across three centuries. The pursuit of happiness weaves disparate strands of Anglo-American religious history together. In The Delight Makers, Catherine L. Albanese unravels a theology of desire tying Jonathan Edwards to Ralph Waldo Emerson to the religiously unaffiliated today. As others emphasize redemptive suffering, this tradition stresses the “metaphysical” connection between natural beauty and spiritual fulfillment. In the earth’s abundance, these thinkers see an expansive God intent on fulfilling human desire through prosperity, health, and sexual freedom. Through careful readings of Cotton Mather, Andrew Jackson Davis, William James, Esther Hicks, and more, Albanese reveals how a theology of delight evolved alongside political overtures to natural law and individual liberty in the United States.

Advances in Endogenous Money Analysis by Louis-Philippe Rochon,Sergio Rossi Pdf

The endogenous nature of money is a fact that has been recognized rather late in monetary economics. Today, it is explained most comprehensively by the theory of money in post-Keynesian monetary theory. The expert contributors to this enlightening book revisit long-standing debates on the endogeneity of money from the position of both horizontalists and structuralists, and prescribe new areas of research and debate for post-Keynesian scholars to explore.

Culturgeschichtliche Novellen by W. H. Riehl Pdf

Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Edward Kellett Pdf

Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
