Languages for Automation by Shi-Kuo Chang Pdf

Two central ideas in the movement toward advanced automation systems are the office-of-the-future (or office automation system), and the factory of-the-future (or factory automation system). An office automation system is an integrated system with diversified office equipment, communication devices, intelligent terminals, intelligent copiers, etc., for providing information management and control in a dis tributed office environment. A factory automation system is also an inte grated system with programmable machine tools, robots, and other pro cess equipment such as new "peripherals," for providing manufacturing information management and control. Such advanced automation systems can be regarded as the response to the demand for greater variety, greater flexibility, customized designs, rapid response, and 'Just-in-time" delivery of office services or manufac tured goods. The economy of scope, which allows the production of a vari ety of similar products in random order, gradually replaces the economy of scale derived from overall volume of operations. In other words, we are gradually switching from the production of large volumes of standard products to systems for the production of a wide variety of similar products in small batches. This is the phenomenon of "demassification" of the marketplace, as described by Alvin Toffier in The Third Wave.

Advanced Automation Techniques in Adaptive Material Processing by Xiaoqi Chen,Aik Meng Fong,Rajagopalan Devanathan Pdf

This volume presents the editors' research as well as related recent findings on the applications of modern technologies in electrical and electronic engineering to the automation of some of the common manufacturing processes that have traditionally been handled within the mechanical and material engineering disciplines. In particular, the book includes the latest research results achieved through applied research and development projects over the past few years at the Gintic Institute of Manufacturing Technology, Singapore. It discusses advanced automation technologies such as in-process sensors, laser vision systems, and laser strobe vision, as well as advanced techniques such as sensory signal processing, adaptive process control, fuzzy logic, neural networks, expert systems, laser processing control, etc. The methodologies and techniques are applied to some important material processing applications, including grinding, polishing, machining, and welding. Practical automation solutions, which are complicated by part distortions, tool wear, process dynamics, and variants, are explained. The research efforts featured in the book are driven by industrial needs. They combine theoretical research with practical automation considerations. The techniques developed have been either implemented in the factory or prototyped in the laboratory. Contents:Overview of Material Processing AutomationProcess Development and Approach for 3D Profile Grinding/PolishingAdaptive Robotic System for 3D Profile Grinding/PolishingAcoustic Emission Sensing and Signal Processing for Machining Monitoring and ControlTechniques of Automatic Weld Seam TrackingWeld Pool Geometry Sensing and Control in Arc WeldingAutomatic GTAW System Control and TeleoperationLaser Material Processing and Its Quality Monitoring and Control Readership: Graduate students, academics and researchers in robotics & automated systems as well as electrical & electronic, mechanical and materials engineering. Automation and Systems Issues in Air Traffic Control by John A. Wise,V. David Hopkin,Marvin L. Smith Pdf

In recent years, increases in the amount and changes in the distribution of air traffic have been very dramatic and are continuing. The need for changes in the current air traffic systems is equally clear. While automation is generally accepted as a method of improving system safety and performance, high levels of automation in complex human-machine systems can have a negative effect on total system performance and have been identified as contributing factors in many accidents and failures. Those responsible for designing the advanced air traffic control systems to be implemented throughout the alliance during the next decade need to be aware of recent progress concerning the most effective application of automation and artificial intelligence in human-computer systems. This volume gives the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Maratea, Italy, June 18-29, 1990, at which these issues were discussed.

Technologies to Advance Automation in Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation by Chen, Chung-Hao,Yang, Wen-Chao,Chen, Lijia Pdf

Within modern forensic science and criminal investigation, experts face several challenges including managing huge amounts of data, handling miniscule pieces of evidence in a chaotic and complex environment, navigating traditional laboratory structures, and, sometimes, dealing with insufficient knowledge. These challenges must be overcome to avoid failure in investigation or miscarriage of justice. Technologies to Advance Automation in Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation provides a platform for researchers to present state-of-the-art technologies within forensic science and criminal investigation. Covering topics such as financial fraud, machine learning, and source camera identification, this book is an essential reference for criminal investigators, justice departments, law enforcement, legislators, computer scientists, automation professionals, researchers, academicians, and students and educators in higher education.
