This volume contains the proceedings of the 7th European Performance En- neering Workshop (EPEW 2010), held in Bertinoro, Italy, on September 23–24, 2010. The purpose of this workshop series is to gather academic and industrial researchers working on all aspects of performance engineering. This year the workshop was structured around three main areas: system and network p- formance engineering, software performance engineering, and the modeling and evaluation techniques supporting them. This edition of the workshop attracted 38 submissions, whose authors we wish to thank for their interest in EPEW 2010. After a careful review process during which every paper was refereed by at least three reviewers, the Program Committee selected 16 papers for presentation at the workshop. We warmly thank all the members of the ProgramCommittee and all the reviewersfor their fair and constructive comments and discussions. The workshop program was enriched by two keynote talks given by Marco Roccetti and Ralf Reussner. The Recommended Action Plan is one in a series of interim documents for the Rural Applications of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) project. Based on the investigation of user needs, a technology review, and concept development and assessment, the plan suggests a recommended direction for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) deployment in rural and small urban areas (less than 50,000 population). Visions for deployment, developed by the project team, suggest a logical strategy that could be taken by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the public and the private sector to bring concepts from infancy to full deployment. These concepts fall into three categories defined through the user needs assessment: Emergency Response, Safety and Hazard Warning, and Traveler Services Information. This document also identifies and evaluates 25 specific action items that could be initiated by FHWA to promote and develop rural ATIS.

A comparable systems analysis was performed on seven systems selected for their relevance to the features and functions of the Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) components of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program. The seven systems were selected for their relevance to ATIS/CVO concepts, user time-sharing characteristics, technology level, dynamics of information flow, level of implementation, and accessibility. Five of the systems were highway transportation or CVO in-vehicle information systems, two were comparable systems featuring advanced navigation and decision aiding in Army aviation. Analyses of the seven systems resulted in human factors lessons learned. The lessons learned were compiled into preliminary human factors design guidelines for ATIS/CVO.
