Advanced Combustion Science by Tsuneo Someya Pdf

Non-uniform combustion, as encountered in diesel and gas turbine engines, furnaces, and boilers, is responsible for the conversion of fossil fuel to energy and also for the corresponding formation of pollutants. In spite of great research efforts in the past, the mechanism of non-uniform combustion has remained less explored than that of other combustion types, since it consists of many, mostly transient processes which influence each other. In view of this background, a group research project, "Exploration of Combustion Mechanism", was established to explore the mechanism of combustion, especially that of diffusive combustion, and also to find efficient ways to control the combustion process for better utilization of fuel and the reduction of pollutant emission. The group research was started, after preparatory activity of 2 years, in April 1988, for a period of 3 years, as a project with a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research of Priority Area subsidized by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan. The entire group of 43 members was set up as an organizing committee of 13 members, and five research groups, consisting of 36 members. The research groups were: (1) Steady combustion, (2) Unsteady spray combustion, (3) Control of combustion, (4) Chemistry of combustion, and (5) Effects of fuels. At the beginning of the project it was agreed that we should pursue the mechanism of combustion from a scientific viewpoint, namely, the target of the project was to obtain the fundamentals, or "know why", rather than "know how" of combustion.

Progress in Combustion Science and Technology by J. Ducarme,Melvin Gerstein,A. H. Lefebvre Pdf

International Series of Monographs in Aeronautics and Astronautics, Division III: Progress in Combustion Science and Technology, Volume I focuses primarily on the aeronautical aspects of combustion. This book discusses the flow visualization techniques, chemical analysis in combustion chamber development, and aerodynamic influences on flame stability. The geometric-optical techniques in combustion research, flame quenching, and ignition in liquid propellant rocket engines are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the flow studies under combustion conditions, geometric optics of flames, and empirical studies of hypergolic rocket propellant ignition delays. This volume is a good reference for research students, scientists, and engineers conducting work in the field of combustion science and technology.

Advances in Chemical Propulsion by Gabriel D. Roy Pdf

Complex, vast, and multidisciplinary, chemical propulsion has been the subject of extensive investigation over the past few decades. Under the leadership of Gabriel Roy, this has been particularly true at the Office of Naval Research (ONR), where his team has focused on the three primary goals of combustion research: improving the efficiency, increasing the range and speed, and reducing the emissions and signatures of combustion systems. Advances in Chemical Propulsion: Science to Technology reports on the progress achieved by the outstanding team of scientists and engineers participating in the ONR Propulsion Program. Its chapters, each written by the scientists who performed the research, cover all aspects of the combustion process, from chemical synthesis to reaction pathways of the fuel, from combustor performance to the reduction of emissions, from the sooting problem to thrust vectoring, and from diagnostics to control. They discuss the relevant issues, describe the approach used and the results obtained, and show how the findings can be extended to practical applications. Richly illustrated and carefully edited for clarity, uniformity, and readability, Advances in Chemical Propulsion offers a comprehensive survey of the field, from pre- to post-combustion. It suggests directions for new research efforts and reflects the state-of-the-art technologies and issues that have a direct impact on combustion systems, both present and future.

Biomass Combustion Science, Technology and Engineering by Lasse Rosendahl Pdf

The utilisation of biomass is increasingly important for low- or zero-carbon power generation. Developments in conventional power plant fuel flexibility allow for both direct biomass combustion and co-firing with fossil fuels, while the integration of advanced technologies facilitates conversion of a wide range of biomass feedstocks into more readily combustible fuel. Biomass combustion science, technology and engineering reviews the science and technology of biomass combustion, conversion and utilisation. Part one provides an introduction to biomass supply chains and feedstocks, and outlines the principles of biomass combustion for power generation. Chapters also describe the categorisation and preparation of biomass feedstocks for combustion and gasification. Part two goes on to explore biomass combustion and co-firing, including direct combustion of biomass, biomass co-firing and gasification, fast pyrolysis of biomass for the production of liquids and intermediate pyrolysis technologies. Largescale biomass combustion and biorefineries are then the focus of part three. Following an overview of large-scale biomass combustion plants, key engineering issues and plant operation are discussed, before the book concludes with a chapter looking at the role of biorefineries in increasing the value of the end-products of biomass conversion. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Biomass combustion science, technology and engineering provides a clear overview of this important area for all power plant operators, industrial engineers, biomass researchers, process chemists and academics working in this field. Reviews the science and technology of biomass combustion, conversion and utilisation Provides an introduction to biomass supply chains and feedstocks and outlines the principles of biomass combustion for power generation Describes the categorisation and preparation of biomass feedstocks for combustion and gasification

Advances in Combustion Science by W. A. Sirignano,Aleksandr Grigorʹevich Merzhanov,L. De Luca Pdf

Authored by some of the most prestigious international researchers, this book contains 21 papers that address five general categories of combustion science: flame theory, heterogeneous combustion, unsteady and cellular combustion, turbulent combustion, and explosions and detonations. The book is dedicated to Yakov B. Zel'dovich, an eminent researcher known for his theoretical works on combustion and detonation, who served as the first chairman of the Scientific Council of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The first five papers give an important perspective of the developments in flame theory, and the critical role that Zel'dovich played in them. The second section examines the issues of heterogeneous combustion and the recent advances in the field. Material dealing with unsteady cellular combustion is addressed in the third section, and the fourth investigates turbulent combustion. The final section treats the subjects of detonations and explosions.
