Advances in Computational and Bio-Engineering by S. Jyothi,D. M. Mamatha,Suresh Chandra Satapathy,K. Srujan Raju,Margarita N. Favorskaya Pdf

This book gathers state-of-the-art research in computational engineering and bioengineering to facilitate knowledge exchange between various scientific communities. Computational engineering (CE) is a relatively new discipline that addresses the development and application of computational models and simulations often coupled with high-performance computing to solve complex physical problems arising in engineering analysis and design in the context of natural phenomena. Bioengineering (BE) is an important aspect of computational biology, which aims to develop and use efficient algorithms, data structures, and visualization and communication tools to model biological systems. Today, engineering approaches are essential for biologists, enabling them to analyse complex physiological processes, as well as for the pharmaceutical industry to support drug discovery and development programmes.

Computational Methods for Understanding Bacterial and Archaeal Genomes by Ying Xu,J. Peter Gogarten Pdf

Over 500 prokaryotic genomes have been sequenced to date, and thousands more have been planned for the next few years. While these genomic sequence data provide unprecedented opportunities for biologists to study the world of prokaryotes, they also raise extremely challenging issues such as how to decode the rich information encoded in these genomes. This comprehensive volume includes a collection of cohesively written chapters on prokaryotic genomes, their organization and evolution, the information they encode, and the computational approaches needed to derive such information. A comparative view of bacterial and archaeal genomes, and how information is encoded differently in them, is also presented. Combining theoretical discussions and computational techniques, the book serves as a valuable introductory textbook for graduate-level microbial genomics and informatics courses.

Advances in Computers by Marvin Zelkowitz,Chau-wen Tseng Pdf

The field of bioinformatics and computational biology arose due to the need to apply techniques from computer science, statistics, informatics, and applied mathematics to solve biological problems. Scientists have been trying to study biology at a molecular level using techniques derived from biochemistry, biophysics, and genetics. Progress has greatly accelerated with the discovery of fast and inexpensive automated DNA sequencing techniques. As the genomes of more and more organisms are sequenced and assembled, scientists are discovering many useful facts by tracing the evolution of organisms by measuring changes in their DNA, rather than through physical characteristics alone. This has led to rapid growth in the related fields of phylogenetics, the study of evolutionary relatedness among various groups of organisms, and comparative genomics, the study of the correspondence between genes and other genomic features in different organisms. Comparing the genomes of organisms has allowed researchers to better understand the features and functions of DNA in individual organisms, as well as provide insights into how organisms evolve over time. The first four chapters of Advances in Computers focus on algorithms for comparing the genomes of different organisms. Possible concrete applications include identifying the basis for genetic diseases and tracking the development and spread of different forms of Avian flu. As researchers begin to better understand the function of DNA, attention has begun shifting towards the actual proteins produced by DNA. The final two chapters explore proteomic techniques for analyzing proteins directly to identify their presence and understand their physical structure. Modeling in Computational Biology and Biomedicine by Frédéric Cazals,Pierre Kornprobst Pdf

Computational biology, mathematical biology, biology and biomedicine are currently undergoing spectacular progresses due to a synergy between technological advances and inputs from physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics and computer science. The goal of this book is to evidence this synergy by describing selected developments in the following fields: bioinformatics, biomedicine and neuroscience. This work is unique in two respects - first, by the variety and scales of systems studied and second, by its presentation: Each chapter provides the biological or medical context, follows up with mathematical or algorithmic developments triggered by a specific problem and concludes with one or two success stories, namely new insights gained thanks to these methodological developments. It also highlights some unsolved and outstanding theoretical questions, with a potentially high impact on these disciplines. Two communities will be particularly interested in this book. The first one is the vast community of applied mathematicians and computer scientists, whose interests should be captured by the added value generated by the application of advanced concepts and algorithms to challenging biological or medical problems. The second is the equally vast community of biologists. Whether scientists or engineers, they will find in this book a clear and self-contained account of concepts and techniques from mathematics and computer science, together with success stories on their favorite systems. The variety of systems described represents a panoply of complementary conceptual tools. On a practical level, the resources listed at the end of each chapter (databases, software) offer invaluable support for getting started on a specific topic in the fields of biomedicine, bioinformatics and neuroscience.

Practical Applications of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, 14th International Conference (PACBB 2020) by Gabriella Panuccio,Miguel Rocha,Florentino Fdez-Riverola,Mohd Saberi Mohamad,Roberto Casado-Vara Pdf

This book highlights the latest research on practical applications of computational biology and bioinformatics, and addresses emerging experimental and sequencing techniques that are posing new challenges for bioinformatics and computational biology. Successfully applying these techniques calls for new algorithms and approaches from fields such as statistics, data mining, machine learning, optimization, computer science, and artificial intelligence. In response to these challenges, we have seen the rise of a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists with a strong background in the biological and computational sciences. These proceedings include 21 papers covering many different subfields of bioinformatics and computational biology. Focusing on interdisciplinary applications that combine e.g. bioinformatics, chemoinformatics, and system biology, they are intended to promote the collaboration of scientists from different research groups and with different backgrounds (computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists) to reach breakthrough solutions and overcome the challenges outlined above.

Computational Biology and Bioinformatics by Ka-Chun Wong Pdf

The advances in biotechnology such as the next generation sequencing technologies are occurring at breathtaking speed. Advances and breakthroughs give competitive advantages to those who are prepared. However, the driving force behind the positive competition is not only limited to the technological advancement, but also to the companion data analytical skills and computational methods which are collectively called computational biology and bioinformatics. Without them, the biotechnology-output data by itself is raw and perhaps meaningless. To raise such awareness, we have collected the state-of-the-art research works in computational biology and bioinformatics with a thematic focus on gene regulation in this book. This book is designed to be self-contained and comprehensive, targeting senior undergraduates and junior graduate students in the related disciplines such as bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, genome science, computer science, applied data mining, applied machine learning, life science, biomedical science, and genetics. In addition, we believe that this book will serve as a useful reference for both bioinformaticians and computational biologists in the post-genomic era.
