Advances in Distributed and Parallel Knowledge Discovery by Hillol Kargupta,Philip Chan Pdf

This book presents introductions to DKD and PKD, extensive reviews of the field, and state-of-the-art techniques. Foreword by Vipin Kumar Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDD) deals with the problem of extracting interesting associations, classifiers, clusters, and other patterns from data. The emergence of network-based distributed computing environments has introduced an important new dimension to this problem--distributed sources of data. Traditional centralized KDD typically requires central aggregation of distributed data, which may not always be feasible because of limited network bandwidth, security concerns, scalability problems, and other practical issues. Distributed knowledge discovery (DKD) works with the merger of communication and computation by analyzing data in a distributed fashion. This technology is particularly useful for large heterogeneous distributed environments such as the Internet, intranets, mobile computing environments, and sensor-networks.When the data sets are large, scaling up the speed of the KDD process is crucial. Parallel knowledge discovery (PKD) techniques addresses this problem by using high-performance multiprocessor machines. This book presents introductions to DKD and PKD, extensive reviews of the field, and state-of-the-art techniques. Advanced Methods for Knowledge Discovery from Complex Data by Ujjwal Maulik,Lawrence B. Holder,Diane J. Cook Pdf

The growth in the amount of data collected and generated has exploded in recent times with the widespread automation of various day-to-day activities, advances in high-level scienti?c and engineering research and the development of e?cient data collection tools. This has given rise to the need for automa- callyanalyzingthedatainordertoextractknowledgefromit, therebymaking the data potentially more useful. Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDD) is the process of identifying valid, novel, potentially useful and ultimately understandable patterns from massive data repositories. It is a multi-disciplinary topic, drawing from s- eral ?elds including expert systems, machine learning, intelligent databases, knowledge acquisition, case-based reasoning, pattern recognition and stat- tics. Many data mining systems have typically evolved around well-organized database systems (e.g., relational databases) containing relevant information. But, more and more, one ?nds relevant information hidden in unstructured text and in other complex forms. Mining in the domains of the world-wide web, bioinformatics, geoscienti?c data, and spatial and temporal applications comprise some illustrative examples in this regard. Discovery of knowledge, or potentially useful patterns, from such complex data often requires the - plication of advanced techniques that are better able to exploit the nature and representation of the data. Such advanced methods include, among o- ers, graph-based and tree-based approaches to relational learning, sequence mining, link-based classi?cation, Bayesian networks, hidden Markov models, neural networks, kernel-based methods, evolutionary algorithms, rough sets and fuzzy logic, and hybrid systems. Many of these methods are developed in the following chapters.

On the Move to Meaningful Internet Systems 2004: OTM 2004 Workshops by Zahir Tari,Angelo Corsaro Pdf

A special mention for 2004 is in order for the new Doctoral Symposium Workshop where three young postdoc researchers organized an original setup and formula to bring PhD students together and allow them to submit their research proposals for selection. A limited number of the submissions and their approaches were independently evaluated by a panel of senior experts at the conference, and presented by the students in front of a wider audience. These students also got free access to all other parts of the OTM program, and only paid a heavily discounted fee for the Doctoral Symposium itself. (In fact their attendance was largely sponsored by the other participants!) If evaluated as successful, it is the intention of the General Chairs to expand this model in future editions of the OTM conferences and so draw in an audience of young researchers to the OnTheMove forum. All three main conferences and the associated workshops share the d- tributed aspects of modern computing systems, and the resulting applicati- pull created by the Internet and the so-called Semantic Web. For DOA 2004, the primary emphasis stayed on the distributed object infrastructure; for ODBASE 2004, it was the knowledge bases and methods required for enabling the use of formalsemantics;andforCoopIS2004themaintopicwastheinteractionofsuch technologies and methods with management issues, such as occurs in networked organizations. These subject areas naturally overlap and many submissions in factalsotreatenvisagedmutualimpactsamongthem.

Knowledge Discovery in Multiple Databases by Shichao Zhang,Chengqi Zhang,Xindong Wu Pdf

Many organizations have an urgent need of mining their multiple databases inherently distributed in branches (distributed data). In particular, as the Web is rapidly becoming an information flood, individuals and organizations can take into account low-cost information and knowledge on the Internet when making decisions. How to efficiently identify quality knowledge from different data sources has become a significant challenge. This challenge has attracted a great many researchers including the au thors who have developed a local pattern analysis, a new strategy for dis covering some kinds of potentially useful patterns that cannot be mined in traditional multi-database mining techniques. Local pattern analysis deliv ers high-performance pattern discovery from multiple databases. There has been considerable progress made on multi-database mining in such areas as hierarchical meta-learning, collective mining, database classification, and pe culiarity discovery. While these techniques continue to be future topics of interest concerning multi-database mining, this book focuses on these inter esting issues under the framework of local pattern analysis. The book is intended for researchers and students in data mining, dis tributed data analysis, machine learning, and anyone else who is interested in multi-database mining. It is also appropriate for use as a text supplement for broader courses that might also involve knowledge discovery in databases and data mining.

Learning Classifier Systems in Data Mining by Larry Bull,Ester Bernadó-Mansilla,John Holmes Pdf

Just over thirty years after Holland first presented the outline for Learning Classifier System paradigm, the ability of LCS to solve complex real-world problems is becoming clear. In particular, their capability for rule induction in data mining has sparked renewed interest in LCS. This book brings together work by a number of individuals who are demonstrating their good performance in a variety of domains. The first contribution is arranged as follows: Firstly, the main forms of LCS are described in some detail. A number of historical uses of LCS in data mining are then reviewed before an overview of the rest of the volume is presented. The rest of this book describes recent research on the use of LCS in the main areas of machine learning data mining: classification, clustering, time-series and numerical prediction, feature selection, ensembles, and knowledge discovery.

Advanced Data Mining and Applications by Longbing Cao,Yong Feng,Jiang Zhong Pdf

With the ever-growing power of generating, transmitting, and collecting huge amounts of data, information overloadis nowan imminent problemto mankind. The overwhelming demand for information processing is not just about a better understanding of data, but also a better usage of data in a timely fashion. Data mining, or knowledge discovery from databases, is proposed to gain insight into aspects ofdata and to help peoplemakeinformed, sensible, and better decisions. At present, growing attention has been paid to the study, development, and application of data mining. As a result there is an urgent need for sophisticated techniques and toolsthat can handle new ?elds of data mining, e. g. , spatialdata mining, biomedical data mining, and mining on high-speed and time-variant data streams. The knowledge of data mining should also be expanded to new applications. The 6th International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Appli- tions(ADMA2010)aimedtobringtogethertheexpertsondataminingthrou- out the world. It provided a leading international forum for the dissemination of original research results in advanced data mining techniques, applications, al- rithms, software and systems, and di?erent applied disciplines. The conference attracted 361 online submissions from 34 di?erent countries and areas. All full papers were peer reviewed by at least three members of the Program Comm- tee composed of international experts in data mining ?elds. A total number of 118 papers were accepted for the conference. Amongst them, 63 papers were selected as regular papers and 55 papers were selected as short papers.
