Advancing and Consolidating Mathematical Modelling by Gilbert Greefrath,Susana Carreira,Gloria Ann Stillman Pdf
This edited volume presents applications and modelling as a world-renowned sub-field of research in mathematics education. It includes the discussion on students’ development of modelling competency through the teaching of applications and modelling. The teaching of mathematical modelling is considered from different perspectives, such as mathematical, pedagogical-didactical perspectives and critical-societal or socio-political perspectives. Assessment practices (local, regional or international) of modelling activities and difficulties with modelling activities at school and university levels, respectively, are discussed. Use of technology and other resources in modelling activities and their impact on the modelling processes are included in the considerations. Teaching practices, teacher education and professional development programs concerning the integration of applications and modelling in school and university mathematics programs are developed in this context.

A Course in Mathematical Modeling by Douglas D. Mooney,Randall J. Swift Pdf
The emphasis of this book lies in the teaching of mathematical modeling rather than simply presenting models. To this end the book starts with the simple discrete exponential growth model as a building block, and successively refines it. This involves adding variable growth rates, multiple variables, fitting growth rates to data, including random elements, testing exactness of fit, using computer simulations and moving to a continuous setting. No advanced knowledge is assumed of the reader, making this book suitable for elementary modeling courses. The book can also be used to supplement courses in linear algebra, differential equations, probability theory and statistics.

Mathematical Modelling by J. Caldwell,Y.M. Ram Pdf
Over the past decade there has been an increasing demand for suitable material in the area of mathematical modelling as applied to science and engineering. There has been a constant movement in the emphasis from developing proficiency in purely mathematical techniques to an approach which caters for industrial and scientific applications in emerging new technologies. In this textbook we have attempted to present the important fundamental concepts of mathematical modelling and to demonstrate their use in solving certain scientific and engineering problems. This text, which serves as a general introduction to the area of mathematical modelling, is aimed at advanced undergraduate students in mathematics or closely related disciplines, e.g., students who have some prerequisite knowledge such as one-variable calculus, linear algebra and ordinary differential equations. Some prior knowledge of computer programming would be useful but is not considered essential. The text also contains some more challenging material which could prove attractive to graduate students in engineering or science who are involved in mathematical modelling. In preparing the text we have tried to use our experience of teaching mathematical modelling to undergraduate students in a wide range of areas including mathematics and computer science and disciplines in engineering and science. An important aspect of the text is the use made of scientific computer software packages such as MAPLE for symbolic algebraic manipulations and MA TLAB for numerical simulation.
Almost every year, a new book on mathematical modeling is published, so, why another? The answer springs directly from the fact that it is very rare to find a book that covers modeling with all types of differential equations in one volume. Until now. Mathematical Modeling: Models, Analysis and Applications covers modeling with all kinds of differe
Modeling Change and Uncertainty by William P. Fox,Robert Burks Pdf
Mathematical modeling is a powerful craft that requires practice. The more practice the better one will become in executing the art. The authors wrote this book to develop the craft of mathematical modeling and to foster a desire for lifelong learning, habits of mind and develop competent and confident problem solvers and decision makers for the 21st century. This book offers a problem-solving approach. The authors introduce a problem to help motivate the learning of a particular mathematical modeling topic. The problem provides the issue or what is needed to solve using an appropriate modeling technique. Then principles are applied to the problem and present the steps in obtaining an appropriate model to solve the problem. Modeling Change and Uncertainty: Covers both linear and nonlinear models of discrete dynamical systems. Introduces statistics and probability modeling. Introduces critical statistical concepts to handle univariate and multivariate data. Establishes a foundation in probability modeling. Uses ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to develop a more robust solution to problems. Uses linear programming and machine learning to support decision making. Introduces the reality of uncertainty and randomness that is all around us. Discusses the use of linear programing to solve common problems in modern industry. Discusses he power and limitations of simulations. Introduces the methods and formulas used in businesses and financial organizations. Introduces valuable techniques using Excel, MAPLE, and R. Mathematical modeling offers a framework for decision makers in all fields. This framework consists of four key components: the formulation process, the solution process, interpretation of the solution in the context of the actual problem, and sensitivity analysis. Modeling Change and Uncertainty will be of interest to mathematics departments offering advanced mathematical modeling courses focused on decision making or discrete mathematical modeling and by undergraduate, graduate students and practitioners looking for an opportunity to develop, practice, and apply the craft of mathematical modeling. Mathematical Modelling by J. Caldwell,Douglas K.S. Ng Pdf
Over the past decade there has been an increasing demand for suitable material in the area of mathematical modelling as applied to science, engineering, business and management. Recent developments in computer technology and related software have provided the necessary tools of increasing power and sophistication which have significant implications for the use and role of mathematical modelling in the above disciplines. In the past, traditional methods have relied heavily on expensive experimentation and the building of scaled models, but now a more flexible and cost effective approach is available through greater use of mathematical modelling and computer simulation. In particular, developments in computer algebra, symbolic manipulation packages and user friendly software packages for large scale problems, all have important implications in both the teaching of mathematical modelling and, more importantly, its use in the solution of real world problems. Many textbooks have been published which cover the art and techniques of modelling as well as specific mathematical modelling techniques in specialist areas within science and business. In most of these books the mathematical material tends to be rather tailor made to fit in with a one or two semester course for teaching students at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, usually the former. This textbook is quite different in that it is intended to build on and enhance students’ modelling skills using a combination of case studies and projects.
