The Age of Spectacle by Tom Dyckhoff Pdf

'A great storyteller . . . you would be hard pushed to find a more knowledgeable or entertaining [guide]' Icon 'Such an interesting book . . . I cannot recommend it enough.' Lauren Laverne In Dubai, a luxury apartment block is built in the shape of a giant iPod. In China, President Xi Jinping denounces the trend of constructing ‘bizarre’ new buildings in wacky shapes and colours. In Cincinnati, celebrity architect Zaha Hadid is paid millions to design a single ‘iconic’ structure – with the hope of single-handedly transforming the region’s ailing fortunes. These incidents are all part of the same story: the rise of the age of spectacle. Over the last fifty years, there has been a revolution in how our cities operate. In The Age of Spectacle, Tom Dyckhoff tells the story of how architecture became obsessed with the flashy, the monumental and the ostentatious – and how we all have to live with the consequences. Exploring cityscapes from New York to Beijing, and from Bilbao to Portsmouth, Dyckhoff shows that we are not just witnessing a new kind of building: we are living through a fundamental transformation in how our urban spaces work. The corporate explosion of the last few decades has fundamentally shifted the relationship between architects, politicians and cities’ inhabitants, fostering innovative new kinds of engineering and design, but also facilitating ill-conceived vanity projects and commercial power-grabs. Timely, passionate and bursting with new ideas, The Age of Spectacle is both an examination of how twenty-first century cities work, and a manifesto for a radically new kind of urbanism. Our cities, Dyckhoff shows, can thrive in the age of spectacle – but only if they engage us not just with dazzling structures, but by responding to the needs of the people who inhabit them. 'Engaging . . . The “iconic” building is the most obvious architectural phenomenon of our age yet, somehow, no one has quite done what Tom Dyckhoff does with The Age of Spectacle, which is to tell its story clearly and plainly.' Rowan Moore, Observer 'First class. Finally, a book that nails the iconic movement – Tom Dyckhoff’s The Age of Spectacle is the book that I wish I had written.' Simon Jenkins 'Unusually accessible [and] well argued.' Evening Standard

Breaking Ground by Daniel Libeskind Pdf

Daniel Libeskind's iconic buildings around the world -- from the Jewish Museum in Berlin to the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, the V&A 'Spiral' to the most symbolic rebuilding project ever: the World Trade Center -- have sparked vigorous debate, not only for the way they look but for the ideas they contain. These are ideas that are important for all of us, and this is the story of those ideas -- a memoir of Libeskind's own life experiences, and of the events of history that have informed them. It is a book about the adventure life can offer each of us if we seize it, and about how we can all harness positively the powerful forces of tragedy, memory and hope.

Truth and Lies in Architecture by Richard Francis-Jones Pdf

This is a collection of provocative essays that journey into the vexed circumstance of contemporary architectural practice. The nature of the great cultural, social, political, environmental, and consumerist challenges facing the contemporary architect are explored, interpreted, and questioned, while drawing connections from architecture theory, philosophy, science, literature, and film sources in an attempt to negotiate the territory between the truth and lies in architecture. These essays written by a leading Australian architect represent a level of comprehensive critical awareness rarely found within the architectural profession and one would be hard pressed to find another comparable figure in contemporary architectural practice. The entire argumentation is impressive, challenging, intellectually at the highest level and beautifully written.

Adventure in Architecture by Anonim Pdf

Here, in words and pictures, is the most exciting architectural story since the building of the great medieval churches in Europe, the grand plan on which a monastic community in Collegeville, Minnesota, and a world-famous architect -Marcel Breuer- have embarked. At the beginning, the Benedictine community of St. John's was considering only the addition of a small brick annex. But as the work progressed, the project evolved into a comprehensive, long-range plan for 19 new buildings. Each new building must be planned for the growth of the community in its several functions: as church, seminary, university, monastery and preparatory school. The Abbot summed up the feeling of the community in his letter to the 12 leading architects who were asked to submit plans for the buildings: "The Benedictine tradition at its best challenges us to think boldly and to cast our ideals in forms which will be valid for centuries to come, shaping them with all the genius of present-day materials and techniques." Functional and artistic success in such a building program depends upon the sensitivity of both patron and architect and the cooperative spirit that is engendered between them. The partnership between the community and Breuer has proved to be as productive as that of any of the great church builders of the Middle Ages. The scope and creativity of Breuer's master 100-year-plan and the spirit of cooperation between him and the monks, who are doing much of the actual labor themselves, have impressed architects all over the world. Hungarian-born Marcel Breuer, who first won recognition for his work with the Bauhaus group in Germany in the 1920's, subsequently taught at the Harvard School of Architecture. He has been practicing in this country and in Europe for 20 years; during this time, his outstanding works have been the church of St. John's Abbey, the UNESCO Building in Paris, the Torrington Manufacturing Plant in Los Angeles and the New Kensington Housing Project in Pittsburgh. A book about his work and ideas, Sun and Shadow, was published last year. -- from dust jacket.

Between Memory and Invention by Robert A.M. Stern Pdf

"A capsule history of American architecture since 1960.”—Wall Street Journal Architect, historian, and educator Robert A. M. Stern presents a personal and candid assessment of contemporary architecture and his fifty years of practice. For more than fifty years, Robert A. M. Stern has designed extraordinary buildings around the world. Founding partner of Robert A. M. Stern Architects (RAMSA), Stern was once described as “the brightest young man I have ever met in my entire teaching career” by Philip Johnson and recently called “New York City’s most valuable architect” by Bloomberg. Encompassing autobiography, institutional history, and lively, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, Between Memory and Invention: My Journey in Architecture surveys the world of architecture from the 1960s to the present and Robert A. M. Stern’s critical role in it. The book chronicles Stern’s formative years, architectural education, and half-century of architectural practice, touching on all the influences that shaped him. He details his Brooklyn upbringing, family excursions to look at key twentieth-century buildings, and relationships with prominent teachers—Paul Rudolph and the legendary Vincent Scully among them. Stern also recounts the origins of RAMSA and major projects in its history, including the new town of Celebration, Florida, the restoration of Times Square and 42nd Street, 15 Central Park West, Benjamin Franklin and Pauli Murray Colleges at Yale, and the George W. Bush Presidential Center, as well as references the many clients, fellow architects, and professional partners who have peopled his extraordinary career. By turns thoughtful, critical, and irreverent, this accessible, informative account of a life in architecture is replete with personal insights and humor. Stern’s voice comes through clearly in the text—he details his youthful efforts to redraw house plans in real estate ads, his relationship to Philip Johnson, which began at Yale and was sustained through countless lunches at the Four Seasons, his love of Cole Porter and movies from the 1930s and 1940s, his struggle to launch an architecture practice in the 1970s in the midst of a recession, and his complex association with Disney and Michael Eisner. Unsurprisingly, New York City plays a big role in Between Memory and Invention. Stern has a deep commitment to the city and recording its past—he is the lead author of the monumental New York book series, the definitive history of architecture and urbanism from the late nineteenth century to the present—and shaping its future. Though now a global practice, RAMSA residential towers rise throughout Manhattan to enrich the skyline in the tradition of the luxurious apartment buildings of the 1920s and 1930s. Supported by a lively mix of images drawn from Stern's personal archive and other resources, this much-anticipated memoir is interspersed with personal travel slides, images of architectural precedents and the colleagues that have shaped his thinking, and photographs of the many projects he discusses. With a thoughtful afterword by architectural historian Leopoldo Villardi that delves into Stern’s process of putting together this extraordinary autobiographical work, Between Memory and Invention is a personal candid assessment of a foremost practitioner, historian, instructor, and advocate of architecture today.

An Architect's Journey by Larry Wolff,Outmask Pdf

An Architect's Journey - Mastering Future Trends in the Anthropocene is a journey into the future of architecture and mastering the Anthropocene's dangerous forces. The book demonstrates how architects and building professionals can lead the way to overcome climate change and the related perils of the Anthropocene by mastering future trends in the design domain. Captivating narratives show how architects can shift their emphasis from aesthetic object-making to meaningful and extraordinary achievement by understanding society's needs and expectations as they critically address the book's thesis. Can architecture shift from its resource-consumptive nature to become a productive, regenerative project that supports urban agriculture and reforestation, serves as a potable water source, produces net positive renewable energy, captures carbon, recycles and converts waste streams into usable materials, while allowing unlimited opportunities for developing new architectural forms and features that increase human and environmental performance without sacrifice to artistic expression and creative experimentation? An Architect's Journey provides new tools, methods, and strategies necessary to make architecture vitally more significant and instructs readers how to apply more aggressive sustainable practices to their work while achieving new modes of artistic expression. The future directions defining the next few decades support a long-range forecast of unlimited opportunity mixed with turbulence, uncertainty, and peril. To succeed, architects and building professionals must strive for positions of leadership, contradict the status quo, expand conventional thinking, behave un-conventionally, abandon exclusive theories, innovate from a framework of multiple perspectives, and skillfully navigate the consequences of difficult choices and actions through informed, collaborative, and integrated practices as forecast by An Architect's Journey.
