The program at Arizona State University (ASU) consisted of complementary experimental, computational, and flight-test elements that examined the aerodynamics of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). All these components supported the actual design of our MAV, called MAVRIC (Micro Aerial Vehicle Research Initiative and Competition) and which competed for two years against other university teams. MAVs are characterized by low operating chord Reynolds numbers and thus present challenges in viscous aerodynamics. Our studies focused on the effects on performance of different wing-body-juncture and wing-tip designs. MAV aerodynamics is strongly affected by the wing-tip vortices which extend over a significant amount of span. Blending the wing and fuselage and adding winglets provided a reduction in the extent of these vortices as well as a refocusing of them away from the lifting surface.

An electromagnetically driven shock tube was studied as a possible new tool for aerodynamic research in which velocities of up to 41,000 feet per second are obtainable in air. At these high velocities stagnation temperatures of about 35,000K are produced. The simple construction and operation of the shock tube is described and an evaluation is made of its performance. The potentialities and limitations of the apparatus are discussed with regards to research applications. The results of some magnetoaerodynamic studies are presented to show the usefulness of this type of shock tube. (Author).

The Third Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, like its immediate predecessor, was organized with emphasis on the calculation of flows relevant to aircraft, ships, and missiles. Fifty-five papers and 20 brief communications were presented at the Symposium, which was held at the California State University at Long Beach from 21 to 24 January 1985. A panel discussion was chaired by A. M. O. Smith and includeq state ments by T. T. Huang, C. E. lobe, l. Nielsen, and C. K. Forester on priorities for future research. The first lecture in memory of Professor Keith Stewartson was delivered by J. T. Stuart and is reproduced in this volume together with a selection of the papers presented at the Symposium. In Volume II of this series, papers were selected so as to provide a clear indication of the range of procedures available to represent two-dimensional flows, their physical foundation, and their predictive ability. In this volume, the emphasis is on three-dimensional flows with a section of five papers concerned with unsteady flows and a section of seven papers on three dimensional flows: The papers deal mainly with calculation methods and encompass subsonic and transonic, attached and separated flows. The selec tion has been made so as to fulfill the same purpose for three-dimensional flows as did Volume II for two-dimensional flows.

The capacity and quality of the atmospheric flight performance of space flight vehicles is characterized by their aerodynamic data bases. A complete aerodynamic data base would encompass the coefficients of the static longitudinal and lateral motions and the related dynamic coefficients. In this book the aerodynamics of 27 vehicles are considered. Only a few of them did really fly. Therefore the aerodynamic data bases are often not complete, in particular when the projects or programs were more or less abruptly stopped, often due to political decisions. Configurational design studies or the development of demonstrators usually happen with reduced or incomplete aerodynamic data sets. Therefore some data sets base just on the application of one of the following tools: semi-empirical design methods, wind tunnel tests, numerical simulations. In so far a high percentage of the data presented is incomplete and would have to be verified. Flight mechanics needs the aerodynamic coefficients as function of a lot of variables. The allocation of the aerodynamic coefficients for a particular flight operation at a specific trajectory point is conducted by an aerodynamic model. The establishment of such models is described in this book. This book is written for graduate and doctoral students to give them insight into the aerodynamics of the various flight configurations. Further for design and development engineers in industry and at research institutes (including universities) searching for an appropriate vehicle shape, as well as for non-specialists, who may be interested in this subject. The book will be helpful, too, in the case that system studies require in their concept phases the selection of suitable vehicle shapes.
