Afterglow by Eileen Myles Pdf

“A ravishingly strange and gorgeous book about a dog that’s really about life and everything there is…astonishing.” —Helen Macdonald, New York Times-bestselling author of H Is for Hawk In 1990, poet Eileen Myles chose Rosie from a litter of pit bulls on the street, and their connection instantly became central to the writer's life and work. During the course of their sixteen years together, Myles was madly devoted to the dog’s well-being, especially in her final days. Starting from the emptiness following Rosie's death, Afterglow launches a heartfelt and fabulist investigation into the true nature of the bond between pet and pet owner. Through this lens, we witness Myles’s experiences with intimacy and spirituality, celebrity and politics, alcoholism and recovery, fathers and family history, as well as the fantastical myths we spin to get to the heart of grief. Moving from an imaginary talk show where Rosie is interviewed by Myles’s childhood puppet to a critical reenactment of the night Rosie mated with another pit bull, from lyrical transcriptions of their walks to Rosie’s enlightened narration from the afterlife, Afterglow illuminates all that it can mean when we dedicate our existence to a dog. “Myles gets at something no other dog book I’ve read has gotten at quite this distinctly: The sense of wordless connection and spiritual expansion you feel when you love and are loved by a creature who’s not human…raw and affecting.” —Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR

Afterglow by Grist Pdf

Hopeful and forward-looking futuristic short stories that explore how the power of storytelling can help create the world we need “This is a glorious book that challenges our conceptions of bookmaking as much as it questions our conceptions of world-building. We, as earthlings, will be better to the earth after experiencing this book. That is not hyperbole.” —New York Times bestselling author Kiese Laymon Afterglow is a stunning collection of original short stories in which writers from many different backgrounds envision a radically different climate future. Published in collaboration with Grist, a nonprofit media organization dedicated to telling stories of climate solutions, these stirring tales expand our ability to imagine a better world. Inspired by cutting-edge literary movements, such as Afrofuturism, hopepunk, and solarpunk, Afterglow imagines intersectional worlds in which no one is left behind—where humanity prioritizes equitable climate solutions and continued service to one’s community. Whether through abundance or adaptation, reform, or a new understanding of survival, these stories offer flickers of hope, even joy, as they provide a springboard for exploring how fiction can help create a better reality. Afterglow welcomes a diverse range of new voices into the climate conversation to envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress. Long Afterglow Phosphorescent Materials by Suli Wu,Zaifa Pan,Runfeng Chen,Xiaogang Liu Pdf

This book presents the fundamental scientific principles of long afterglow phosphorescent materials and a comprehensive review of both commercialized afterglow materials and the latest advances in the development of novel long afterglow materials. It is designed to supply much needed information about inorganic and organic afterglow materials, including detailed treatment of structure, classification, preparation techniques, characterization, surface modification chemistry, and optical measurements. Special attention is given to technological applications such as photovoltaics, photocatalytic reactions, and lighting and molecular sensing. Although traditional long afterglow phosphors have been widely investigated and used in industry, and significant efforts have recently been made toward the use of these materials for bioimaging, there is to date no scientific monograph dedicated to afterglow materials. This book not only provides a beginners’ guide to the fundamentals of afterglow luminescence and materials, but also gives skilled researchers essential updates on emerging trends and efforts. The work provides a special focus on organic afterglow materials, which offer several advantages such as light-weight, flexible, and wide varieties; mild preparation conditions; and good processability. This book is aimed at postgraduate students, researchers, and technologists who are engaged in the synthesis, development, and commercialization of afterglow materials. It represents essential reading on interdisciplinary frontiers in the materials science, chemistry, photophysics, and biological aspects of afterglow materials.

Unfolding Afterglow by Brooke A. Hofsess Pdf

This title examines professional learning in the contemporary milieu of public education, considering the impact of No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top on such encounters for art educators. Drawing from prominent scholars of philosophy and education (Greene, Dewey, Gadamer), aesthetic experiential play is theorized as a catalyst for teacher renewal through the embodied intensities (Merleau Ponty, Deleuze) it prompts: an aesthetic swell and afterglow. The swell is conceptualized as a movement that unmoors teachers as learners, setting them adrift towards unanticipated, surprising possibilities. Afterglow is an illuminated space that unfolds with a commitment and openness to move in swell towards the ever expanding new. This text invites readers into the findings of a qualitative research inquiry by unfolding a yearlong correspondence of letterpress printed postcards and hand rendered letters exchanged between the author and a cohort of K-12 art teachers. The innovative epistolary form evokes the relational and arts-based educational research methodologies that informed this lively aesthetic inquiry, providing new directions and possibilities for both art educators and arts researchers to explore. Advocating for more complex understandings regarding how educators become renewed as artists and as teachers, this poetic and pictorial text provokes an expanded vision for what counts as professional learning, and the processes by which teacher renewal is nourished and experienced.“Theorists, pedagogues, methodologists and researchers, alike, will find themselves in aesthetic play as they experience the flows, swells, and intensities that Hofsess beautifully crafts ... A brilliant piece of art.” – Mark D. Vagle, The University of Minnesota “Hofsess refocuses our attention to what really matters in education: how, as Elliot Eisner said, the teaching of art is more than the teaching of art.” – Richard Siegesmund, Northern Illinois University “Title illuminates the challenges and possibilities of maintaining transformative experiences in the everyday practice of K-12 art education.” – Tracie Costantino, Rhode Island School of Design Brooke Hofsess, Assistant Professor at Appalachian State University, received her MA in Art & Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and her PhD in Art Education from The University of Georgia. She comes to academia with seven years of professional experience as a K-12 art educator. Her research on teacher education and renewal has received honors including the Elliot Eisner Doctoral Research Award in Art Education from the National Art Education Association, and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Arts Based Educational Research special interest group of the American Educational Research Association.

The Afterglow by Rose Burghley Pdf

Perfect for fans of the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn. Lacey is an English teacher at a fancy girls’ school in Switzerland. Her young pupils have something in common: all of them seem to be in love with the school doctor Roger Soames. Finding him quite rude and off-putting, Lacey finds herself drawn instead to the alluring Doctor Ludwig Heist. There is a problem, though, as he does not seem the least bit interested in Lacey. Rather, his eyes are more fixed upon one different lady after another. What can Lucy do to grab the attention of the man he so desires? Set in beautiful Switzerland, the love tale from the 20th century was written under the pseudonym Rose Burghley belonging to no other than the master of romance herself, Ida Pollock. Afterglow of Creation by Marcus Chown Pdf

This is the story of the cosmic background radiation, the "afterglow" of the Big Bang in which the Universe was born. Fifteen billion years after the event, the afterglow still permeates all of space, making it the oldest relic in creation and providing an imprint of the Universe as it was in its infancy. But the most astonishing thing about the afterglow of creation is that it wasn't discovered until 1965, and then only by accident - despite the fact that it had been predicted in 1948 and the technology to detect it existed during World War II. Chown brilliantly weaves a tale of the search for the origins of the Universe. Beginning in the 1920s and culminating with the flight of the COBE satellite and what it found, this book uncovers the secrets of the Universe.

A Theory of the Auroral Afterglow of Nitrogen by O. Oldenberg Pdf

An attempt is made to explain the 'auroral afterglow' or short-duration afterglow of nitrogen, discovered in 1932 by Kaplan, in terms of well established processes. In this afterglow, N2+ bands are excited together with bands of neutral N2 molecules, which show energies far exceeding the limit evident in the well known long-duration afterglow (Lewis-Rayleigh afterglow). This limit is given by the energy of recombining N atoms, 9.76 eV. (Author).

Linear and Nonlinear Tonks-Dattner Resonances in Laboratory Afterglow Plasmas by K. V. N. Rao Pdf

The electroacoustic resonances commonly known as Tonks-Dattner resonances were excited in neon, argon, xenon and mercury afterglow plasmas using microwaves in the frequency range 2 to 4 GHz. The afterglow plasmas were produced by high voltage dc pulses across electrodes in cylindrical discharge tubes located in S-band waveguides. Peak electron densities are measured utilizing the electroacoustic resonances. These are compared with those measured simultaneously using the microwave cavity perturbation technique. The nonlinear interaction of the transverse electromagnetic waves with the inhomogeneous plasma is probed as the excitation signal strength is increased from microwatts to hundreds of milliwatts. The second harmonic amplitude of the signal emitted from the plasma column when excited at plasma resonance is probed as a function of the excitation field strength and also as the gas pressure is varied. (Author Modified Abstract).

Afterglow of Empire by Aidan Dodson Pdf

During the half-millennium from the eleventh through the sixth centuries BC, the power and the glory of the imperial pharaohs of the New Kingdom crumbled in the face of internal crises and external pressures, ultimately reversed by invaders from Nubia and consolidated by natives of the Nile Delta following a series of Assyrian invasions. Much of this era remains obscure, with little consensus among Egyptologists. Against this background, Aidan Dodson reconsiders the evidence and proposes a number of new solutions to the problems of the period. He also considers the era's art, architecture, and archaeology, including the royal tombs of Tanis, one of which yielded the intact burials of no fewer than five pharaohs. Afterglow of Empire is extensively illustrated with images of this material, much of which is little known to non-specialists. By the author of the bestselling Amarna Sunset and Poisoned Legacy.
