Towards a "second Generation" in Environmental Laws in the Asian and Pacific Region by Lin Heng Lye,Maria Socorro Z. Manguiat Pdf
Laws in the twentieth century were based on economic growth and development. This new century calls for the reassessment of all laws from an environmental perspective in consideration of such looming environmental concerns as global warming, degradation of biodiversity and pollution. This book captures some provoking thoughts raised during a symposium on second generation environmental laws held in Japan in 2002. The wide range of articles will promote greater understanding of what has been achieved with the first generation of environmental laws, what is needed for the second generation, and how to bridge the two.
Southeast Asian Responses to Globalization by Francis Loh Kok Wah,Joakim Öjendal Pdf
It is now apparent, especially in the aftermath of the regional financial crisis of 1997, that globalization has been impacting upon the Southeast Asian economies and societies in new and harrowing ways, a theme of many recent studies. Inadvertently, these studies of globalization have also highlighted that the 1980s and 1990s debate on democratization in the region – which focused on the emergence of the middle classes, the roles of new social movements, NGOs and the changing relations between state and civil society – might have been overly one-dimensional. This volume revisits the theme of democratization via the lenses of globalization, understood economically, politically and culturally. Although globalization increasingly frames the processes of democracy and development, nonetheless, the governments and peoples of Southeast Asia have been able to determine the pace and character – even the direction of these processes – to a considerable extent. This collection of essays (by some distinguished senior scholars and other equally perceptive younger ones) focuses on this globalization–democratization nexus and shows, empirically and analytically, how governance is being restructured and democracy sometimes deepened in this new global era. A historical review introduces the volume while an analytical assessment of the ten case-studies concludes it.
HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in Central Asia by Joana Godinho Pdf
Although the countries in the Central Asia region are still at the earliest stage of an HIV/AIDS epidemic, they are experiencing a steep growth of new HIV cases, related epidemics of injected drug use, sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) and tuberculosis. They also have a large youth population and low levels of public awareness about the epidemics. This report contains country profiles which identify key issues and recommend further action, covering epidemiology; strategic and regulatory frameworks; surveillance; preventive, diagnostic and treatment activities; non-governmental and partner activities; and resources available.
